this happens to me sometimes when he entered the lobby

This happened to me as well. Went into Lobbies, rooms appeared for about a second before disappearing, backed out to the main menu, and suddenly the lobby menu was everywhere. Going into Character Select resolves it (I guess because it loaded a different screen?).
