Spotlight Eighty Sixed Weekly T-shirt Design Submissions. Get Paid to Draw Skullgirls Merhandise!

Sorry, today just wasn't good for me, some things came up I had to take care of, I am more available tomorrow if you're still interested.

No prob, sounds good. Hope things are going well at work. I'll get on the PS3 in a bit. I'm trying to loosen up on the art for this latest entry & make it something worthy of being picked. If not, I've enjoyed doing some art for fun.

Ah sorry, had to leave my brother's sooner than I expected. The wait is on til next weekend now to get back to the PS3.
Thanks for checking in, and I'll squeeze in more time on the art when I can this week til then.

Do contest winners start out as rough art that is approved to go through revisions?
If art does go through revisions, how many rounds is it on average?
Has anyone from this forum ever won a weekly contest? (asked before, but I'm curious). If the forum's not allowed to know, that's fine.

I'd ask these in an email, but I thought others might benefit from info as well.
Here's how the art has progressed from the rough art, thanks in part to wise art direction from 86ed. (OK to show it here, I hope)
Thanks!

Lately, yes. I'm not the sole factor in deciding anything, as a note so I can't give a proper response immediately most of the time.

It varies, it depends on the artist, style, design, etc.

Uh, Viro had a poster this time last year I think? Riftka has done some stuff too. Only 3-4 people seem to post art regularly on this forum.

OK, thanks. These last few months have really pushed my skills in learning some of these characters in both gameplay & rendering them in art!

Thank you for your submission Viro, we'll be looking over it soon.

-------------------------------------------------------------

I just wanted to make a quick post clarifying some things and some things that play into out selection process:
Theres a few things we take into account when selecting the design for the weekly tees:
How is the quality of the artwork itself?
Does it look like artwork that was designed with a shirt in mind, or is it more of just an illustration that happens to fit the dimensions? A well designed graphic element, whether it be shapes, test, frame, etc can make a massive difference between something feeling like it's awkwardly floating and something that looks like a shirt design.
What character is on the shirt? Is it someone we have done a design of recently? Is it something we haven't seen much of, like something themed after a locale or in-game event? I think I'm the only person who has done anything like that, I myself did both the River King and Dak'Kuul Dubu shirts, neither of which feature any characters.

One of the most common pitfalls with submissions is we get a lot that don't take into account what it would look like on a shirt and even fewer take advantage of the negative space of a shirt. The other is many artists don't ever at all stray from the game's in-game colors, this isn't bad in itself but the right color scheme/shading can make a tremendous difference. I myself prefer more limited color selection, it makes a shirt much more wearable to myself but I try to remove my own bias as much as possible and try to think about what the community at large would like. To me, too many colors tends to make a design fall back into illustration first, clothing design 2nd issue. Like Yojio's design wouldn't have been anywhere near as eye catching if it wasn't for the crazy neon colors, and it's also a very strong example of taking advantage of the negative space/shirt color. This design pretty much only works on black, which is absolutely fine! If you do a design that say, only really works on red, we can accommodate that.

Thanks for the info, Maji.
And BB revisions (as suggested by an 86ed person) have really helped.
Though some previous winners are full color, and I like it full-color, I can try limiting the colors if that is what's needed.
I don't think these characters have appeared as a group in a winning entry before.

Also, nice job, Viro. Glad to hear you were a winner in the past. Hope we both manage a win in the upcoming weeks.

Here's one I got done a couple minutes ago, any suggestions/changes? I tried to stay within the 12 (16?) color range of the NES

Sorry, we cannot take mashups, something like that could get us into pretty big trouble with Capcom seeing how we have a formal license with them.

I saw on the 86ed FB page that the weekly contest ended as of 10/31, with possible seasonal releases in the future.
Suggesting that the original post indicate this to avoid confusion.

Guess there's a chance of my Join the BB art being used in the future, since it went through a number of revisions w/them.
If not, it was good practice (along with the other three attempts). No more fanart for a while. All work at this point.

Since the days of submitting weekly tees are done, does this mean the same for submitting sticker/poster designs as well?
