Evo and You / SG / the Community / etc

I made it 35 minutes in, feel like that's my limit. Was there anything else relevant after that point?

I have no idea I can only take it in small doses I just thought it would shed some insight on some of the perceived problems with the scene.

Basically like this:

-Chris G plays Persona where people keep saying shit to him and about his play and make him feel like he's not welcome in trying out a new game or supporting a small scene cause everyone kept giving him shit for it. Brings up SG example as well.

-When he gets asked about why the anime community is so small and what it can do to grow, Chris G says that he thinks the community isn't very welcoming to newer people and that if they want to grow then they should start by not making their already small community more toxic by being unfriendly to new players.

-Anime player walks in and starts counter-arguments. Denies that Chris G actually gets shit from the community (which in all fairness, he really does/did), and talks about Dustloop and other random things to make the Anime community seem friendly. Also REALLY hates Cross Tekken.

-Anything else is basically a slapfight where Chris G hates on Persona and the Anime Player hates on Cross Tekken/Marvel 3.
ChrisG gets shit because he gets too salty and tweets/says dumb shit as a result.

But if ChrisG hates SFxT, I like him a little more.

As for the toxicity to new players, that's where I think SG isn't like the "anime" community is. Maybe it's because we're small, but it seems we have a lot less toxic players than most communities.

(Yay, SG is #1 in something!)

Remember that Chris G is known to be pretty salty in general. He may just be amping up the perceived unfriendliness of airdashers for some reason. Besides, airdasher communities are also pretty small, so that line of thinking doesn't hold much water.

ChrisG doesn't know what it feels to be part of a small community for a game EVO doesn't care about. He doesn't seem to understand the struggle of trying to get people to go to a tournament for your game. Honestly, I think he's forgotten what it's like to play a fighting game for fun.

At least I think he doesn't. If he does, maybe it's been so long he forgot altogether.

Thats not it at all and kinda whack to say but i'm not falling for your shenanigans, but this is such an old topic, that video is so fucking old back when SG WAS considered anime because it had nowhere else to go really and they welcome'd it.

People act like SG was always a poverty game, which isn't true at all.

Back when sg was the new game on the block yo ayyy

It looks like anime, it gets played alongside other anime games at events like rebel up, so even if we are our own scene we still have to deal with problems in the greater anime community (incorrectly perceived or otherwise).

Actually, the FGC incorrectly labels all air dashers as anime and always has, regardless of Street Fighter being the most anime game of all.

UFGT7??? Or 8...

First CEO that had it.

EVO2012.

Civil War 4

ECT3(or 4 I'm fucking up on the numbers)

Some other midwest major I forgot the name of that could just be me thinking of UFGT so if so disregard this?

Most if not ALL of these majors were 100+ in entries. Just because you didn't attend them doesn't mean SG was always "poverty"

Don't forget UMvC3 which also has airdashes and chain combos.

I severely doubt it. Check the numbers.

Also, people played UNIEL at some point. P4A has a lot of entries. Still...

I would argue that anime is pretty much defined by air dashing and the term doesn't really have anything to do with it's visual content (not anymore at least.) I would say anime=long combos + Aerial focus + airblocking of some type.

Basically what I'm saying is marvel is anime.

At least we know that a guy chanting the English equivalent of "Vacuum Surge Fist" then chucking plasma from his fists isn't anime.

I don't need to check the numbers I went to 3 of them xD

I don't know what you want me to say if you don't believe me, but alright. You all can have fun about forcing fixes on nothing that needs to be fixed OR can be fixed.

Now you're mad about the term of "anime" when describing FG's. Im so stressed. :(

I'm not the one wanting to move a small game to a less attended major. Barking up the wrong tree there.

Ryu. Shinkuu Hadou Ken... Had to Google it lol

That was just generally to this thread didn't mean to say it to anyone in specific.

It's OK, bae. We don't need to hold back anymore because we can't get it again ;)

Yeah no I have no fucking idea how we both got it either.

UFGT is ded now. Combo Breaker may or may not be its replacement.

CEO dropped the game hard after 2012.

Evo had it as a side tourney and never gave it much exposure after 2012. Also, do you want to risk another Tekken incident?

Civil War dropped Skullgirls last year.

ECT also dropped Skullgirls last year.

Basically, most of the majors you mentioned either dropped the game like a brick, are dead, or have little respect for the game and its community.

*snip*

You completely missed his point, which is evident by the manner in which you responded...

Ken was saying that, during the year of 2012, Skullgirls wasn't the poverty game that we often make it out to be. There were numerous majors and decent attendance at events that year because the game was new and people were giving it a chance to thrive. What you said is also true, yet still congruent with Ken's statement. He wasn't saying that it isn't a poverty game, he's saying that it wasn't always a poverty game.

Can anyone think of underrepresented fighting games in the community? Yatagarasu comes to mind, maybe soulcalibur and GGxx (now that xrd is out), marvel 2, and it looks like project m is getting shafted by bigger tournaments. It would be cool to have a "Poverty Game National" or something.

Name an older fighting game. Any single one. It would be considered poverty by modern standards. Here are my thoughts on what games would be "poverty" enough in the main FGC's eyes to be potentially considered for a poverty-only tourney:

  • Melty Blood
  • UNIB
  • Aquapazza
  • Chaos Code
  • Arcana Heart (any one of them, but most likely Love Max)
  • Lethal League
  • KOF 98/2002/XI
  • Super Turbo
  • Street Fighter Alpha 3 (apparently, people liked playing Alpha 2 competitively instead of 3)
  • Street Fighter EX 3
  • VSav
  • Soulcalibur (which one would be a touchy subject)
  • Smash Brawl (nobody's ever seemed to like competitive Brawl)
  • Battle Fantasia (got rekt when SF4 hit)
  • Garou: Mark of the Wolves
  • CvS2
  • Virtua Fighter 5: Final Showdown
Also, maybe have a UFGT-style Mystery Game tournament so that really obscure games like the Asuka 120% series can be showcased.

Can we not argue about this very, very irrelevant topic? Seriously, what do other Anime games matter to us (as Skullgirls players)? What does the genre other people classify us as matter? What does 2012 matter? That was 2-3 years ago, we should be focusing on what we're doing today and onward. Are we going to Hive Mind out to specific events? I think we should make the attempt, like I said earlier, so that, in and of and for our community, we have the most satisfying tournament experiences we can.

That looks more like a list of old/dead games than poverty.
Is that not the definition of poverty to you?

Combo Breaker game list is announced 1/16, so hold onto your butts. I see no reason why it wouldn't get picked again.

wow melee got side stage but smash 4 got main.

Sorry to exhume an old thread...

After our showing at Winter Brawl 9, I felt confident enough to put in a request to Big E about being in the main lineup at Summer Jam in August.

I presented it to him as a test for us to be considered for main game status at NEC 16.

I'm waiting on him to respond, and I don't expect any sort of answer for a few months. I did this because games that did really well at NEC had crap numbers at Winter Brawl, but not us. We proved to have a more reliable community in terms of attendance, and that does carry weight with an organizer.

NEC is a big deal to us. I see Summer Jam as an opportunity to put up a good number right before Big E settles on a game roster for NEC.

If I have to drag five people up there from Richmond to make us a big fucking deal help out the numbers, I WILL DO IT IN A HEARTBEAT.

Good shit, Elky!

well it's all up to us. we have to get the numbers. which in hind sight shouldn't be too much of a trouble. NEC 15 was like 35 people, just around there? If we can get a constant 20- to 30 people going to the east coast tournys that will mean alot for Big E they will take a look at us then. but for right now i'm just glad we are getting top 8 stream time.
