Failed to start game (unknown error)

When i try to run skullgirls steam gives me a Failed to start (unknown error) i have reinstalled steam and skullgirls, deleted the appcache. It still wont run

But Skullgirls endless beta will work...So i'm at a loss at what i should do.

Windows 8 64bit
Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-4700MQ CPU @ 2.40GHz
8GB RAM

have you tried verifying your game files? I know you said you re-installed but sometimes files "can" be left over unless you go in and manually delete the folders between installs.

Right click the game in your steam game list. Properties > Local Files tab > Verify Integrity Game of Cache

Worth a shot.

Pretty much every time try to load skullgirls I have to re-install the game because some error pops up, I think its like error 59 or something. It only happens on 1 particular PC I use and I'm fairly certain one of the programs that runs in the background is the problem but I don't know which one (I know that anti-virus programs like zone alarm screw around with steam).

I suggest try re-installing the game first, if it doesn't work the easiest thing would probably see if closing any programs in the background works, then If you can't isolate the problem just re-installing windows (or whatever you use) ,after backing your stuff up, should fix it.

1.Most steam games need microsoft files and directx files installed.
2.registry issues can be cleaned with CCleaner.exe
3.Malwarebytes can find viruses for windwos/mac/linux
4.restarting said applicaion with certain compatibility functions could also work.
5.could also be corrupted cache files or game data is corrupt.
6.messed up somewhere during installation.

If only ubuntu had some sort of windows native support i would switch so fast -_-

Baiko reminded me of the next thing I usually recommend when having weird issues like this with games...
Make sure your directX is fully up to date.

I'm having this same issue. I found that it's caused by my McAffee anti-virus software. I shut down the automatic detect for a few minutes and reinstalled Skullgirls. The game worked fine; however, when I turned back on the auto detect, the game wouldn't run and the needed file was quarantined. Is there any easier work around than turning off your anti-virus?

Get a better anti-virus? Unfortunately Mcaffee is generally more harmful than helpful these days... :(

Unfortunately, I just got a new PC and McAffe is what it came with. Obviously when the service runs out I won't be renewing it, but for now it sucks that I can't play Skullgirls. Maybe the next patch will fix this?

Skullgirls isn't doing anything wrong you see, it's likely that McAffee anti-virus just assumes any unregistered program that's creating or modifying files (at least those found in folders that aren't "Documents and Settings") is a virus. I've not got McAffee but there should be a way to add Skullgirls as an exception (try rummaging around Control Panel on your start menu or whatever), or simply uninstall it and get something free and lightweight like Microsoft Security Essentials which will probably do a better job anyway.

What I do for now is just turn it off completely whenever I want to play Skullgirls. Unfortunately, there is no way to add exceptions to McAffe. I did however report the file as a non-threat to the McAffe website; I doubt that will accomplish much.

Delete it and use a freebie anti-virus in the meantime like spybot or avg free or something. OR internet with half a brain and you should be good.

Hell, I haven't used an anti-virus in like 7 years now besides the built-in windows defender and popup blockers in chrome/firefox and have never had an "infection" but I also practice safe-browsing habits. Don't ever click a popup or "close" button in them, use the program's process to close it, stay away from random porn sites and pirate bay, always review ALL options when installing new software (to avoid ad bars, toolbars, things replacing your default browsing settings) etc etc.
Working as a computer tech at Staples for years taught me one simple fact... 95% of viruses and adware/,malware in people's systems are their own damn fault. I say 95% and not 100% because that other 5% is when these people let someone else use their computer :D. These things don't just "sneak" into your system, users open the door and welcome them in like a fat Santa with presents.

Yeah, I'd just get rid of McAfee entirely. If you want a good antivirus, I recommend Avast.
