Many moons ago, when Skullgirls was first being campaigned for fundraising, I was still playing Street Fighter Alpha 3. Street Fighter Alpha 3 was my favorite fighting game of all time, and I never thought that anything would top it.
"Skullgirls? Sounds like the name for a cutesy Monster High type game." are the words that I uttered the day of learning about Skullgirls and its fundraising. I couldn't have been further off with my judgement.
Many months later, Skullgirls was given a free weekend on Steam. Upon seeing it, I was like, "Sure, why not." It only took a few minutes of playing as Valentine to see how far off my initial prediction of the game was. I fell in love almost instantly. The game was so fluid, faster-paced, grotesquely hilarious, offered very balanced mechanics, the combos and commands were easier to execute compared to what I played before (so there would be less random punches and kicks being thrown when I was on the other side of the screen), and the art style is just eye candy. Not to mention, I noticed the various Street Fighter references (the announcer's lines) among other video game references (Ms. Fortune's Bubsy reference) which makes me smile.
Since then, I have been very interested in the lore of the game, and I can say I am probably obsessed with the game now.
However... I realized that I might just suck terribly at fighting games. I noticed something; when I play fighting games, I always set the fighting speed to maximum and choose the cheapest possible character to play as. In Street Fighter Alpha 3, I turned the speed up to Turbo 7 and played as Akuma or M. Bison. In Skullgirls, I play as Ms. Fortune. Is it a bad thing that I can only play with speedy spam? I absolutely need to have maximum fighting speed, or the game feels too slow. I hated Street Fighter 4 because of how slow the fighting was. It seemed to take eons to beat the crap out of each other. Will I be frowned upon for playing as Ms. Fortune?
