Beowulf Cerebella Valentine
Ive been away from Skullgirls for a while and really missed the bandwagon. After finally having the money to buy the game I've messed around abit and kind of find myself in an odd place. I'm not to sure about who I really want to invest my time learning but I've been comfortable with bigger slower characters mostly cause I suck at doing long specific combos as the lighter speedier characters. Plus I'm coming over from Street Fighter 4 where I only used Vega. I'm decent at pokes and can do grabs okay, what characters would you all suggest?

Watch some streams and see which character you find the most interesting. I initially went peacock because I thought she looked funny as hell. And when I saw people using bella for a good peacock assist, I played bella. Then peacock got dropped and bella became my main.
I would also say don't worry about having long combos because everyone's got them and it is possible (though hard) to play a solely less hits-more resets style with anyone. Big Band has very short, good damage combos (and good poking I believe) if you really want to avoid longer ones. But again, don't go into the mindset that "I want short combos".
I would recommend Bella though to start. Great damage, the Bella Flowchart Combo is universal and pretty easy and she has the tools for any situation. They may not be the best tools out of the entire cast (sad horizontal reach on Devil Horns), but they are there.

Did a lil experimenting with Bella last night and was very pleased with her options and answers for most problems. Did have problems getting in on Peacock but I felt like that would initially be an issue due to her being a long range character. Am hoping Beowulf is accessible as Bella is since I love his design. Finding it abit rough to power up Big Bands power up move especially against aggressive characters like Valentine.

Being honest, i chose a character because its design, and its personality, and if the character have, a backstory. I was in doubt in the beginning between Filia and Bella, because they looked like the "good guys", and then, i picked cerebella, and i like her, but she seems so devoted to the medicis, and they clearly abuse on that, that i don't know anymore. Playing story mode (even knowing that nothing is canon right now), made me like Ms. Fortune and Peacock a lot, Fillia and Painwheel are cool, so i don't know. I think i will research more.

@Wolf_Punk

If you really like pokes, Parasouls long ranged disjointed normals are similar to Vega's claw stuff, kinda?

Her grab range is really bad on the ground but she has a really fast and incredible dash to make up for it to get into position. Her air grab range though is incredible.

She's also got simple fireballs to control space and really high priority normals and great mix up. (And a reversal).

Her spacing is a bit hard to get used to at first but she might be worth a try. Her 5MP, 5LP and 2LK are really fun to use when spacing on the ground.

I'll give her a try, really waiting for Beowulf as well. Did love Parasouls design and has two colors of some of my favorite anime and game characters ((Mitsuru and Olivera Armstrong)). I'll defiantly sit down and spend a lot of time with her once I'm done with work today.

i know this threads a little old by now but fukua is also a great character for beginners from what i hear.

she has good mixups, simple inputs, versatile rushdown and zoner, very good command grabs, and incredibly simple but damaging combos.

mobility is a bit of an issue, has a constant dash and double jump but no air dash, but makes up for it with zoning. Pokes arent long range but their fast and have decent priority.

Her playstyle is more similar to akuma then vega but regardless I have heard that some street fighter players find her pretty easy to get into. You can also think of her like Parasoul on easy mode, not that Parasoul is too difficult to play.

I am still in doubt, for now i'm playing filia, but i pretend to lear the basics of each character, a simple combo or 2, and then wait for the final patch to decide something.

Here are the character guides that I've made so far. You might end up taking a fancy to some of the characters featured in them:

Most of what's been said here is pretty valid. Just find a character you like! Don't worry about being able to execute when you just start, everything takes practice to improve.

Beowulf's and Big Band's combos are relatively easy compared to the Vanilla 8.

Eliza seems to be a favorite among female players.

I'll keep working on more beginner-friendly guides (and rework my original ones which weren't too good).
everyone love eliza
