Freedom Planet: 2D Sonic-Inspired Indie Platformer

Yeah, but...
did you go into the Men's Room???
You bet your sweet urinals I did.

The sad thing is, I don't care for Spade, but for very different reasons. Specifically, I was almost certain that he was going to be the game's Platinum Games-style rival, with several encounters and lots of motivation for both the rival and the main character to kick each other's respective hind-quarters. The big problem was that Spade had next to nothing to do, and we know so little about him, so I found myself not caring about him at all. Every time he showed up, it was like:

"I need to find my father's killer."
"Dude, I know who your father's killer is."
"I don't care. You betrayed me."
<I cross my fingers hoping for more information on that last bit>
"Smell ya later."
<Facepalm>

I think one of the worst parts for me was that
the fight against Spade was BORING compared to every single other rival fight! He only has like three moves and an... admittedly cool dash/air dash, but every one else you fight has so much more going for them.
Finally, once you beat the game
Nothing with him is resolved. None of his plot threads go anywhere, you never get the full story of why he hates you, and worst of all... YOU ONLY GOT TO FIGHT HIM ONCE?!? ONCE?!?
I'm guessing that we are going to get more content for Spade once he becomes playable DLC, but at the moment, he's kind of just... pointless.

The funny thing is, there actually was a character that ended up being exactly what I hoped Spade would be
Nerra! Nerra is given a strong motivation to hunt you down (you are ex-cons, and your trying to bust out of prison), we know a decent amount about her, we as the player want to kick her ass for what she does to your party, she gets actual plot stuff to do, and the fight against her was kickass! She was freaking awesome! Just going on their respective appearances in the game, I would much prefer Neera to be the DLC character to Spade. I love you Neera!

So I managed to beat the whole game once. First, I'll give my spoiler-free review, than I'll give a couple points of interest that are spoilers.

Freedom Planet is a gem. It manages to find the perfect line between speed, platforming, combat, and exploration that so few games can. The game is short, but there is plenty of replay value from trying to collect all the collectibles and trying to get the best level competition times, easily making the game worth the $15. The characters are great, the story starts kinda shaky, but improves by about the second half, the dialogue ranges from alright to very impressive, and the game is just a beauty in terms of visuals and music. I recommend this game to anyone with an interest in platformers, Sonic or otherwise.

Now for spoilers:

I talked about how the plot was weakened by the number of characters. Luckily, right after I started feeling that, they stopped introducing character, and gave several of them more time to actually be... characters. My personal favorites were Neera, Major Zao, Brevon, and Serpentine.

One of my main concerns going into Freedom Planet was that it would be too easy. Dragon Valley and Relic Maze were pushovers, and I feared that a similar difficulty would reside in the rest of the game.

I could not have been more wrong.

The difficulty curve, to my extreme pleasure, ramps up super high, leading to a final boss that I can only describe as the most fun I've had dying 27 times in ages (and I was playing on NORMAL!). The difficulty felt challenging, but fair, always making me aware that the vast majority of deaths I suffered were from my own dumb mistakes.

On the subject of the final boss, the game did two things that I REALLY HOPED they would do with it's final battle(s).

1. The final boss was the antagonist from the beginning of the game. I am so sick of games that give you loads of motivation to want to stop a villain, only to switch out that villain at the very end for an "even badder villain". By the end of the game, you hate Brevon so much that your motivation to destroy him couldn't possibly have been the same towards some new villain out of nowhere. So thank goodness he is the final boss.

2. The final phase of the final boss is a 1v1 against Brevon without any giant robots. It is just you and him. It was pretty much the 2D equivalent of a Platinum Game's final boss... only HARDER! He is SO STRONG!!!

Man, I enjoy the game so flipping much. Right now...
The scene where Lilac is tortured by Lord Brevon was just so nightmarish. I was shaking with anger and horror as I saw with my own eyes. I never have seen anything quite like it.

The sad thing is, I thought the tortured scream of the prince in the game's intro sequence was unexpectedly brutal. That scream didn't even come close to how horrifying Lilac's was, and it was made even more brutal because it wasn't cut to black like the Snatcher brainwashing, and Lilac's fur was freaking charred! By the time Neera found her, Lilac was clearly still in horrible pain, and I genuinely felt terrible watching it (in a good way).

Honestly, what age demographic are they targeting with this game? Because some of this shit just don't feel right.

That decapitation in the opening scene, all the talk of maiming and killing, your character explodes into tufts of fur when they die sometimes... Seriously, WTF?

Still haven't beaten the game yet, but with all the vagueness between the characters and their interactions, it's like the devs are screaming, "Hey! We're totally going to expand on all this shit later with some form of supplementary material!"

I figure they're aiming for the "me" demographic, "me" being people that are old enough to have played at least one of the original Sonic the Hedgehogs on the Sega Genesis, and are therefore in their late teens or young adults. It's an indie game, so it does not need an ESRB rating, but I would guess that it would have earned a Teen Rating.

Although I agree, especially with the Spade dialogue, it really does feel like more content will be added later on to explain stuff. Which is why I'm glad we already know that more content will be added later on for free.

I figure it's the demographic of people who would watch the Sonic SatAM series, younger teens who can still like colorful things but want something edgier. It's definitely somewhat awkward when you consider the contrasting styles, but it's hard to argue that it doesn't have its own appeal to some people.

Other than the Spade boss fight, I agree with you on everything, especially the encounter with Spade him in the near final level. I was expecting some piece of information for the past between the girls and Spade, but I felt cheated on that. Also, the difficulty spiking up later in the game was both fun and frustrating at the same time. Lord Brevon was so malicious and menacing that I feel that he can put others to shame at the moment. I was unsure of the fate of Prince Dali after the fight, but something tells me that Spade's story might shed some light on that and some other stuff. Also, I died 35 total times.

What? Only 35 deaths?! I consider myself pretty damn good at this sort of game, and I had 84 deaths.

An entire 27 of those deaths were from
Final Dreadnought Round 4 alone! And at least 20 of those were against solo Brevon.

So when are we getting that OST? I need more stuff to add to my video game music playlist.

Seriously, this music is gdlk.

EDIT to avoid double posting:
So hey, beat the game as Lilac finally. Died 65 times. Most of my death were up against Serpentine in Final Dreadnaught Round 2. Also, Brevon's final form is such an asshole, but I guess that should be expected since he's kind of a huge asshole in general. Overall, great game. Would play again. In fact, I will play again. As Carol. Maybe tomorrow.

@juju_for_president Actually, 35 was the death count game counted. I died about the same amount or a little more than you in the actual count. The AI does not show mercy later on. I was a bit livid, yet determined to finish it. I was so glad I beat it once. That was on Normal.

I don't know for certain, but through a slight spoiler in the release trailer, I found out that
there is one more encounter with Spade that is only in this stage. It IS the Scarfs' Hideout, if I'm not mistaken, so MAYBE we find out more about him there?

Edit: Other than the prior mentioned important Casino Night "Fortune Street activity", who else has done this?

I just finished that level.
You don't learn anything, other than the Red Scarves are some kinda ninjas.

Finally got around to finishing the game with Lilac last night. I can't remember my exact death count, but it was somewhere in the 60's. Pretty much the same deal as what you guys mentioned above as far as the source of deaths go. I only had about four lost cards to pick up afterwards though, so with those mostly off my back, I'm hoping my Carol run goes a little smoother. I'm actually dreading some sections with Carol, because towards the end I felt like I was using just about every trick Lilac had to make it through (and she's got a lot).

So I think when people ask me what the game is like, I'll confidently tell them it's "Megaman Zero with springs and loops." The gameplay was satisfying, but the kid gloves definitely come off with a vengeance. Story-wise it could have been tighter in a lot of places, but I think even those components added up to a pretty engaging ride by the end.

Well, except for Spade anyway. Ugh. I think even those hornet nests were more interesting characters.

Yeah, the way I beat Brevon with Lilac was just abusing the Dragon Boost. Melee was dangerous because his knife does so much damage. It didn't help that he was also super fast. Hell, even Dragon Boosting wasn't an entirely safe option, because he can throw you out of it. Now how the hell do I beat that with Carol?

I imagine the invincibility on the Wild Kicks will be very necessary to stand a chance.

Personally, I'm curious how MILLA is gonna beat the final boss! She has FOUR LEAFS OF HEALTH! That means Brevon's knife will instant-kill her at max health!

I don't think her moveset is going to do her much good either. Her moves are: a projectile with a very slow startup, a very short range little burst move, a shield that, if I'm not mistaken, will only protect her from the single blaster shot, and a better burst move that requires holding the projectile from the first move.

At the same time, her damage output is a lot higher than the other two, so maybe her glass cannon status will really shine in the fight, and give her fast killing potential.

I am very glad that I backed this game on Kickstarter! I remember playing the demo of this game when Lilac was still a hedgehog and it really has changed from being a unique fan-game into obtaining its own identity!

Rather than going through the game on normal for my first run, I went on hard mode for all the characters in the game right from the start. I think only the amount damage is increased in hard mode, but it certainly made some parts of the game very difficult. For example, on hard, Brevon's knife attack does 6 whole leaves of damage, which only leaves Lilac and Carol with 1 left (I believed in total I died about 172 times as Lilac doing hard mode blind, in which about 52 of those deaths were from the boss of Final Dreadnought 2 and 62 throughout the whole final boss).

Oddly enough I found those challenges much easier with both Carol and Milla (Probably due to me already beating it with Lilac), and ended up dying much less with them (both were a little bit above 100 deaths). I barely died at all with Carol against Brevon's last form thanks to her ability to stick to walls makes his attacks not too hard to avoid plus her invincibility on Wild Kicks aid it that too.

Those stages still composed most of my deaths in the runs, but not as many as Lilac, in which some areas that were not that bad for Lilac were much harder for the other two (In general I would say Milla destroys bosses but has trouble surviving in stages while Carol was very similar to Lilac but her lower speed and lack of many air options without a nearby wall or motorcycle hampers some bosses for her)

Personally, I'm curious how MILLA is gonna beat the final boss! She has FOUR LEAFS OF HEALTH! That means Brevon's knife will instant-kill her at max health!
I actually might have something to say about that, although it might not be what you think it is, so I'll put it in spoilers just in case as there is a difference but I might say it can disappoint.
Milla actually does not get to fight the final form of Brevon which really disappointed me. I know this is not some sort of glitch as the final battle music plays during his second phase and the stage is completed after you beat him. I kinda wish she got to fight him as I found that she completely destroys the second phase even on hard mode due to her high damage output and her ability to reflect projectiles back at him quickly ends the fight.

Completed my Carol run not too long ago. Around 60 deaths, about the same as Lilac, but this time, most of my deaths were in Final Dreadnaught Round 4, specifically against the boss.

Also, Brevon's final form wasn't as difficult as I thought it would be, but perhaps I'm already used to fighting him as Lilac. You can still get thrown while doing Wild Kicks, but you won't take any damage. I think his second form was harder because of Carol's lack of air options. Thinking back on it, Lilac's cyclone made that part of the fight almost trivial.

So when are we getting Milla? And that soundtrack?

Supposedly Backers are already being linked to the soundtrack in some form. I was a late Paypal Backer, but I did order the soundtrack in my package, so I hope they get around to sending something our way soon.

Speaking of the soundtrack, I hope they include the old Mahjong theme in there somewhere. I was really surprised to discover that song got replaced in the final game. That was one of my favs!

While I would like to give Galaxy Trail more of my money, I need that soundtrack ASAP. Will pirate until legitimate means to purchase soundtrack is available.

EDIT: So I went back and read some spoilers that I missed. I want to take the time to agree with @juju_for_president about the final boss.

Now for spoilers:

On the subject of the final boss, the game did two things that I REALLY HOPED they would do with it's final battle(s).

1. The final boss was the antagonist from the beginning of the game. Ugh, Brevon is so fucking perfect as an end game boss. Every time he's on screen, he displays even more douchebaggery than he did the last time you saw him. You hate him for all the right reasons, and it just makes it that much more satisfying when you finally kick his ass.

Seriously, this guy! He kills the king of a nation and brainwashes the prince in order to start a conflict between the other nations of the world so he can steal an artifact that is the source of power for the entire planet. And Brevon's motivation isn't global conquest or a lust for power. He just needs it to fuck off the planet. He has absolutely no empathy, and it's great.

And then you fight him. Holy shit, that fight. You take down his giant insect bot and then his power suit thingy. And then he bursts out of the suit, still so smug and confident. And with good reason, because he's tough as nails. When I finally beat him, I literally yelled out, "Take it, you bitch!" Shit, I even did it a second time when I beat the game with Carol. Fuck you, Brevon. Fuck. You.

Hey, no need to pirate for now. Just listen to the OGGs in the game's music folder. I refrained from listening to them at first, but after beating the game I just went to town on 'em. The finished soundtrack will probably be more robust, but this will tide me over fine until I get my official copy.

Really hard to pick a favorite track too. I just love how the music shifts in tone as the game progresses, and really builds up nicely to that final showdown.

On that subject, what are everyone's favorite tracks so far?
So far, mine is Jade Creek Act 2. The first piece in that stage had a fast-paced but strangely relaxing sound to it. Jade Creek Act 2 takes that motif and freaking rocks out!

The only problem is that the ridiculous amount of explosions going on at this stage tend to make the music harder to listen to. Normally, I would just stand still and listen to a piece of music I like in a platformer, which would have dealt with that problem, but it got me so pumped that I tried going even faster!

Seems like a fun game but I just can't stand the character designs. seem like Sonic fancharacters 13 years olds post on deviantart

This. I thought about buying it, I know you should value gameplay more than optics, but the designs just look so atrociously bad.

I hope everyone who likes these kind of designs has fun with the game, I just play Shovel Knight again.

That's basically what it is, so yeah. Lilac was a hedgehog before the game's development.

I've always loved the progression from Relic Maze 1 to Relic Maze 2, both the level and the music. The tone shift is just pretty dramatic and I think they compliment each other that way.

Freedom Planet Patch:

1.14.0 Notes
Ahoy! Our next update is ready, and we've made a number of commonly-suggested tweaks to the game as well as a good number of bugfixes.

Changes

- Added a new Easy difficulty. It is similar to Casual, but it has Normal mode's damage and hitstun rates and the life regeneration is a bit slower.
- Milla's recoil from the Super Sheild Burst is slightly stronger.
- If you die during the boss fight in Pangu Lagoon, you will now respawn directly above the door switch.
- Being thrown by Brevon without any life petals will no longer result in death.
- Brevon now shouts "NO!" when defeated in Final Dreadnought 4.
- A couple of tester names in the credits have been updated with their real names.
- Your character's sprite now appears at the end tally during the credits, making it easier to tell which character was used in screenshots.
- Milla now has her own Mahjong cursor.
- The version number is now displayed at the bottom right of the main menu.

Fixes

- Extra lives bleeding through the walls in the bonus stage
- If the player was killed while hanging onto a bar, they would sometimes stay on the bar and remain in the "hurting" animation instead of falling off
- Price Dail's sideways riding sprite in Sky Battalion wasn't updated
- The horizontal scrolling on Jade Creek's moon was too loose, making it seem like there are two moons in the sky at certain points
- Prince Dail's laser cards in Battle Glacier were using Brevon's blade sound
- The sounds for Pangu Lagoon's boost ring and Final Dreadnought 3's speed boosters were incorrect
- Sound effects weren't being cleared on death, resulting some cases where a looped sound would keep playing on respawn
- If a cutscene begins and the player character is not at a flat angle, their sprite occasionally remains rotated for the entire scene
- The Coil enemy in Final Dreadnought 2 that is supposed to be on the ceiling sometimes doesn't rotate properly and leaves behind its collision detector
- (Attempted) Player being locked in a ghost state when killed in the final fight while standing on one of the sloped corners
- Skipping the final scene before the credits caused the game to loop back to Fortune Night
- Brevon's voice actor was incorrectly credited as Alexander Normandy in the credits

Just beat Adventure Mode with Carol. That "Wild Kicks" move really saved my bacon on multiple occasions, especially with Lord Brevon. I think I died around 40-50 times.

This. I thought about buying it, I know you should value gameplay more than optics, but the designs just look so atrociously bad.
Actually, I felt the same way that you and Chicken did when I first saw the game. I still have issues with some the artwork too, but if you're a fan of old Sega games, you really should play the demo. It plays really well, and visual critiques aside, it's still a high quality level of pixelwork that they achieved on a tight budget. It would have looked amazing back in the 90's compared to games like Bubsy and James Pond that were getting sequels left and right (not hatin', just sayin').

I'd also honestly say that I've enjoyed playing Freedom Planet a lot more than when I originally played Sonic CD, Knuckles' Chaotix, or the Sonic Advance games. From a guy that worshipped Sonic CD as a kid, and BOUGHT a 32X just to play Chaotix, that's saying a lot. Sure, between FP and Shovel Knight, I would consider Shovel Knight the more polished experience, but I'm so glad I took time to enjoy both games. This stuff really takes me back in a good way.

Going on a tangent about FP's character designs though, while I personally don't mind Carol's design, I agree that a lot of the character designs could have been greatly elevated with a few more drafts, especially Lilac's. It might also have been nice if they had consulted with an artist like Gashi Gashi earlier in development to help create a less Sonic-y look for the characters, and then incorporated more of that look back into the sprites. You can tell that the lead designer was pretty attached to the art style he chose in the beginning though, so I doubt he plans on changing it for any potential sequels. I definitely wouldn't mind a revamp of the character visuals though.

Anyway, if you're even remotely interested in the game, just try it out. I mean, isn't that how a lot of people ended up enjoying Skullgirls?

I don't know man. The demo has been available for a long time. If you knew about the game and chose not to play the demo, I don't think gameplay mattered to you at all.

That said, I feel like gifting away a copy. Who wants a copy of Freedom Planet on Steam?

@Verdant Brave If no one else wants it, I would be more than happy to take it; I have a friend I would be willing to send the copy to over Steam.

Of course, that is only if no one else wants it.

...

I am a fan of old Sega Games, but Sega isn’t just Sonic for me. And I have tried out the demo, it isn’t a bad game, but It does nothing that makes me want to play it. Its just... different, slower Sonic. And I'm not big enough of a fan of these kind of games for me to justify playing this. Its nice and all, but I have no interest in playing it any further.

With Shovel Knight or MM9 I have the interest because I love Mega Man and the other NES classics, but here it just isn’t there.

And also, design and art-style, I already said what I think of those. I want to add, design or the art of a game haven’t kept me from playing them, I played and love "Dust", even though the style is pretty much your generic package of furry.

...it isn’t a bad game, but It does nothing that makes me want to play it.
That's a curious remark, but I get you. I guess that pretty much describes how I feel about most first-person shooter games.

But hey, you're talking to a Comix Zone fan here! Sega's more than Sonic for me too. I guess that's really what drew me to FP, since it borrows from a lot of games I enjoyed on those systems. It was just cool to see an indie shoot for that Genesis/Saturn vibe instead of the more common NES/SNES inspirations.

Funny that you mention Dust though, cuz yeah, Dust and FP definitely share a lot of similarities production-wise. You can tell games like these were in the developers' minds for a long time, and even though they can't please everyone, I give them props for seeing their ideas through to the end.

Another update today:
1.15.0 Notes
There's a lot of boss balancing going in with this patch, so we would highly recommend updating if you've been having trouble in any of the Final Dreadnought stages. We apologize to those who didn't sign up for the extreme difficulty spike.

As a reminder, the former, more difficult versions of the affected bosses still exist in Hard mode.

For those who bought the standalone EXE through the Humble Store, we will be sending them this build so they can provide it to existing buyers, and we'll let you know when that's pushed out. It will be up to you to check the Humble Store and download this update, and we hope you do!

Changes

- Life petals are now replenished between stages.
- Scenery has been added to the top area of Dragon Valley's final map so it doesn't look so unfinished to players who find their way up there somehow.
- In Lilac's version of Fortune Night, Serpentine no longer uses his missile attack on Normal and below. He still uses it in Jade Creek on all difficulties.
- If you are stunlocked by the DNA Cannons in Sky Battalion or Final Dreadnought 3/4 and you lose all of your petals in the process, you will not die in the middle of the stunlock. Only getting hurt at the beginning of the stunlock will kill you.
- Normal and below, Neera will only turn to face you when landing.
- The giant green lasers from the Absolution no longer stunlock. Instead they knock the player backwards and deal a fixed amount of damage.
- Added two checkpoints to Final Dreadnought 2's first map.
- One of the Axle Turrets in FD2's oxygen segment has been removed to make it easier/faster to get through that part.
- Final Dreadnought 2's boss waits longer between attacks and has a longer windup time for its dash move on Normal and below.
- Final Dreadnought 3's boss fires one less orb while flying on Normal and below, making its flight projectiles easier to jump over.
- Final Dreadnought 4's first vertical section has been rearranged to be less tedious. More shield crystals have been placed in the stage as well.
- Lord Brevon's power suit waits longer between certain attacks on Normal and below. The attacks themselves are unchanged.
- Lord Brevon uses a more choreographed attack sequence on Normal and below, along with pausing slightly longer between attacks. The attacks themselves are unchanged.

- "This file will be deleted" message showing when a blank file is selected and the cursor is on the Return option
- Difficulty setting wasn't properly saving
- Controller sensitivity wasn't properly saving
- Milla could slide up walls and steep hills while holding down the shield button without losing momentum
- (Attempted) Player getting locked in a stun position instead of dying
- Skipping Carol's cutscene where she's about to enter Thermal Base brings her back to Sky Battalion
I'm really happy with how they're doing the boss nerfs. The original versions will still exist in Hard Difficulty (which also comes with the added benefit of giving Hard Difficulty additional differences), while allowing those playing the easier difficulties to avoid some of the insane boss strength.

I agree with you completely on what they are doing with the bosses. What I love most is how they are still making the original versions of the bosses available on hard mode rather than just removing them all out together. In my opinion it is awkward to me when a update changes around a lot of the original experience because after conquering it, it can feel as if the developer is cheapening up the accomplishment of beating the challenge. That is not necessarily a bad thing all the time as somethings do need fixes (Brevon's throw killing you was quite annoying I would say), but it can be a shame for those who enjoyed how something originally played out. With this, people such as me can still fight the difficult bosses on hard mode while new players can enjoy normal mode with much less frustration.

On another note, I wonder if Spade might end up having a different end game than the others including Torque. From how the plot seems to stay mostly relevant for all the current playable characters in terms of where they go or who they fight, I feel as if it could be made that way.

My theory on how Spade's story (assuming his DLC inclusion is not Classic Mode-only) is that:
Since his final appearance in Lilac's story was chasing down his brother, it only makes sense that Spade's final encounter would be against Prince Dali.

I'm guessing that after the fight, Prince Dali, finally knocked to his senses and dying, will apologize to Spade for what he did, with Spade doing so as well (for being a criminal and all) in a very touching death scene. I also assume that Spade had found out the truth at some point before the final meeting with the heroes at Battle Glacier, which would explain why he was chasing his brother in the first place.
Also, holy hell! The official soundtrack is 71 tracks for TEN DOLLARS?!?

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHH They have the original Dragon Valley track. Must download, but my brother is playing League of Legends.
