Hands down, if this movie sucks, I’m finished with Godzilla movies. This can’t possibly be bad. For me personally, this one could very well rank up with the original from what I’ve seen until now. While I love all the Godzilla movies (Zilla doesn’t count) for their cheesiness and the monster fights, I think this new one could deliver fantastic monster action alongside the serious tone of the first movie, and have interesting human plots as well.

Godzilla will fight other monsters, you can spot one of them in this trailer if you look carefully, and he’ll use his atomic breath. That’s a real enough Godzilla for me. Let him kick some serious ass, monster and human ones, and I’m happy.

I feared they wouldn’t really show Big G, I hate it when monster movies do that, but since they show his face quite regularly now, hell it’s even on the freaking poster, I think that won’t happen.

What do you guys think? Are you exited for this movie? I can’t wait to go and see my first Godzilla movie on the big screen. Sounds irritating for someone who is a big Godzilla-fan like me, I know, but here in Germany, only Emmerich’s turd was shown in theaters. And getting the classics on DVD – don’t even get me started. I have 18 of them now, and that’s sadly all the ones I can get without having to buy bootlegs.

Oh and by the way, you can talk about all things Godzilla here, not just the new movie. Have fun!

Yesterday I watched the 5-minute footage from WonderCon and damn… blew me away. Godzilla and his enemy look fantastic. I have seen pictures of Godzilla’s face before, official and not official ones, but it looks simply perfect in motion. He has a really characteristic face that looks like a mash up from the original 1954 one and the Millennium interpretation.

Good thing I downloaded this, seems like the banhammer has hit even DailyMotion by now.

If anyone wants a detailed summary of what was going on in these 5 minutes, just ask. Some of this you’ve already seen in trailers, but it’s much more awesome in context, trust me.

I was never that interested in SH Monster Arts figures.
They were a little too expensive for my wallet.
 
They are pricey, true, but they do deliver in terms of quality. These figures are almost equal to the suits worn in the movies. Only thing other than the price tag is the size for me, they aren’t really big.

But as I said, quality-wise they are perfect and thus excellent display pieces.

I still wait on how they do G2014, if it isn’t really amazing I take NECA’s 12” figure over it. It’s twice as tall, comes with sounds and is most likely cheaper. And NECA also does a good job in terms of quality, all figures I bought from them had pretty good sculpting, painting & a good range of articulation. I have only seen pictures of the 6” version, but if the bigger one is the same deal, I’m pretty happy with it.

My favorite… out of 28 movies? That’s a tough question :D

I like most of them, I really love the Heisei ones, mostly because those were the newest when I was a kid. But still, I can’t pick just one movie, because I like so many of them.

If someone would lock me in a room without sunlight, food & water and only free me once I named my favorite Godzilla movie, I would choose the original from 1954. No matter how much I love the trashy monster fights, the original is still unbeaten to this day. Maybe you can’t really compare them because Godzilla definitely took another road after it, but it’s still a masterpiece.

I’m a little disappointed that no cinema in my region does a special "G-Night" with all the first movies of the seasons, ending with the new one. Something like that would be pretty cool. Or just the original and then the new one. Seeing the original in the Japanese version on a big screen would be totally awesome.

But I see were you coming from with Giant Monsters All Attack, that’s a pretty good movie. Although the whole "Godzilla is a vessel for dead soldiers"-thing is kinda stupid.

What I tend to do when picking out my favorite movies is just pick my favorite from each era of Godzilla films seeing as they all changed pretty dramatically from era to era. That also allows me to keep the original first movie separate from the others as it's own stand-alone film from most of the others. However, I still have a deep and bizarre affection for Jet Jaguar, I have no idea why.
 
Just thought I would ask. which would be a good Godzilla film to start from?
 
Well I typically try to tell people if they want a good understanding of the series, starting from the original film is a good idea before moving to the later ones as it drastically changes in mood and style after the first movie. But it's kinda hard for a lot of folks to get into and appreciate the first one since it's so much older. There's not really a continuity you have to be familiar with either so where you start is really kind of arbitrary.

One major thing to note however is that the movies prior to the millennium series stuff is all pretty cheese-tastic and some are downright laughably bad, but in that fun kind of way. If you want something that leans a little closer to serious then I'd recommend looking into the millennium series Godzilla movies first. If you're interested in those and start getting more into the series then maybe you could start trying to dip your toes into the older and more silly/goofy movies that came before them.

My first Godzilla movies for example were the original Godzilla vs. Mecha Godzilla which I watched with my dad when I was like 5 or 6, on an old black and white television. But That was just where I got interested in the series and I had to just catch what I could on TV if any of the movies happened to be on. It wasn't until much much later on in my late teens that I began watching all the movies, thanks to the advent and growth of the internet as well as being able to more readily find DVDs of the movies that hadn't gotten a VHS or television release in years prior.

Maybe you already know some other monsters beyond Godzilla and might want see more of them, pick up a movie that’s starring them as Big G’s enemies/allies and get started.

Anyway while I love both the Heisei & Millennium eras, I prefer the old campy Showa films.
There's just something so comforting about them & I find them hard hate.

5: Godzilla 2000 (1990)
4: Invasion of Astro-Monster (1965)
3: Godzilla vs Biollante (1989)
2: Godzilla vs Mechagodzilla (1974)
1: GMK: All Monsters Out Attack (2001)

Honorable mentions include Terror of Mechagodzilla (1975), Godzilla vs Mechagodzilla 2 (1993), & Godzilla Final Wars (2004).

I know that Godzilla isn’t much about story, but James is highlighting the best and worst scenes from the movies and if you want to watch them first, you might consider not ruining the fun of watching it without knowing what’s ahead.

But on the other hand, if you want a short preview of the movies without caring much about spoilers, go for it.

Yeah I should have probably noted that they can be slightly spoiler-ish of big scenes in movies. But I feel they don't give away everything and mainly highlight what is good and bad about each film in an informative way. As Q said though if you don't really care so much about the stories in each film, which all range from serious to outright ridiculous (at times) then those mini reviews could help you decide. If nothing else you could check out one film from each era of Godzilla and see which one appeals most to you that way perhaps. ^^

Godzilla Daikaiju Battle Royale is a fan made flash game made by Alex Merdich.

This is a fighting game that plays like Godzilla Monsters of Monsters on the Nintendo Entertainment System. (Only the gameplay is more balanced)
With a roster of over 60 PLAYABLE FIGHTERS, multiple incarnations of certain monsters, & with most of them being 100% movie accurate!

Also the in-games graphics are completely hand drawn. (Give Alex a hand of that)

Not to mention the game's soundtracks has a bunch of remixed tracks from different Godzilla movies done by omgitsgodzilla (not a member of the forums) & Vinnie Degregory aka Darth Calypso (Check out his Youtube Channel: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC2oUzmsk3L2tLaV1dIWgbXA)

Though the game still needs a lot of polishing (Since there's only one guy working on it in his spare time), however it is getting updated every 2 or 3 months with either a new character, new music, or both.

Good lord so much epicness right there. After this and the article I read some days ago where Gareth Edwards (the director) described the new Godzilla as "The Last Samurai", an ancient warrior, I have no doubt that this movie will deliver.

What am I talking about? I didn’t had any doubt about this project since I saw the first trailer.
 
I've always like the cheesy Godzilla movies. There was something to them that was so funny in how they delivered the movie that made it silly yet pure awesomeness when it came to the monster fighting. If this new 'Zilla flick gives out just a bit of cheese wizz and stays away from the super serious monster movie (like CloverField is ) then it could be just as great as Pacific Rim.

It has gigantic monsters fighting each other, so a little bit of cheesiness can’t be avoided. But it won’t be as over the top as many of the Japanese movies are, it tries to keep the dramatic tone from the original up.

But I think you will still enjoy it, this one doesn’t try to be super realistic like the Emmerich one, it’s just Godzilla like he always should be, crushing buildings and kicking other monster butts.

I didn’t really like Pacific Rim, although it was better than I expected.
 
I enjoyed Pacific Rim for the satire it was meant to be, as well as being a homage to giant robot vs. kaiju anime and series. However I still think I'll enjoy Godzilla so much more if not just for the fact that at least this time the character was treated with some actual respect to the franchise. I think that line from Ken Watanabe pretty much sums up everyone's feelings on the matter of a new Godzilla movie. "Let them fight." Another thing I like is that this trailer pretty much establishes a few things right off the bat that are essential to Godzilla movies and their monsters.

1. Godzilla and the other monsters can't be touched by modern weaponry of any kind.
2. The monster(s) will end up fighting Godzilla.

I'm sorry but I still can't get that gut feeling out; that this Godzilla movie is going to be the same as the modern monster flick with the stupid shaky cam and all of these human character that I personally don't care about when it comes to Zilla movies. I hope that this is going to be a good movie, I really do. :S maybe it's the brandy... maybe I'm worried over nothing.

It's still not the 98' Godzilla movie and that's really much more important to me than it having shaky cam or not.

If by that you're referring to "That's a lot of fish" and the fact they killed Godzilla at the end of the movie, then I'd have to highly disagree. But if you're talking about the actual Godzilla movies then I can agree I like the cheese, however I don't mind seeing a more serious Godzilla movie, especially if it turns out good.
 
I was such a Godzilla fanboy when i was younger. The toys, movies, the games..... GAMES!

This won’t happen. I’ve seen the 5 minute footage from WonderCon and there is no shaky cam what so ever, despite being action sequences with both monsters in it. The director knows what he’s doing, and he knows that no one wants to see shaky cam and endless teasing of monsters without showing them. The camera will be classic, it will show the monsters in all their glory.

I don’t like the humans most times either, but their where Godzilla movies where I liked the human cast. "Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla" from the Millennium-Saga comes to mind.

You need to have humans in it, that’s just the way it has to be. Otherwise you can’t really show the terror and destruction the monsters are causing. With what I’ve seen so far of the new movie, they do a good job with the humans. Casting Bryan Cranston was a brilliant idea, since a lot of people enjoyed Breaking Bad and know he’s a terrific actor.

The story around him and his family seems interesting, although I personally would have made a change. From what we know from the trailers, the wife of Cranston died in an accident within a nuclear reactor, presumably caused by the Muto. His son is a soldier whose family is still in the city when Godzilla/Muto raids it. We have a returning theme here. I personally, would either erase that or make Cranstons child a daughter who is a soldier and wants to rescue her family. Why not have a tough female in the second lead-role? Are female soldiers still that uncommon? I think not.

But I can speculate all day long, seeing as how I will watch the movie in less than two weeks, I will soon know the answer to "Is it good or bad?".

And about the Godzilla games: I have all of them for my Ps2, and I love them to this day.

Well, I would also like to say that a lot of the plots in most of the Godzilla films of the past were something like aliens controlling another monster from a different place that they sent to attack the Earth and humanity for them, which Godzilla defeats after a big battle. At least they decided to not go with alien invaders bringing a monster to Earth from space right off the get go. I think the direction they went in for the movie and focusing on personal loss as the defining aspect for the human characters we're following most kinda ties in nicely with the whole dramatic and serious tone of the film just fine. And hey at least the acting from Cranston will be a MASSIVE step up from pretty much any Godzilla movies of the past.

to tell you the truth this new movie reminds me of the first Godzilla movie, where the Americans got involved and helped destroy Zilla. That is after the King of monsters kicked Tokyo's ass into the Edo era.

Indeed. But my personal problem that I always have with movies will really get me here. I watch trailers in English, and I was blown away by a few lines from Cranston. But once I will watch the dub in the cinema, I will be totally pissed because I know how much better it sounds in English. I doubt any voice actor can rival this performance.

That angered me a lot with the Hobbit last year, where I knew Smaug’s awesome English voice from the trailers and then heard the German one in the theater. Ugh.

But Godzilla himself doesn’t (usually) talk, so I don’t have to fear that :)

You mean "after the American’s edited the whole movie." :>

And another thing: If you keep calling Godzilla "Zilla", we will get confused here. "Zilla" is the name given to Emmerich’s abomination, both by fans and Toho.
 
Not something everyone knows so it's not that big a deal. But yeah the Zilla from the 98 movie was nothing like Godzilla and his official name by Toho was changed to "Zilla" getting rid of the God part since he wasn't even close and was killed by 3 jets with normal missles. Soooo they let Godzilla nuke him with atomic breath in Final Wars and it felt goooooood. :D

Yes. But let’s not forget what music played underneath the footage. Many people seem to forget that Toho was as much involved with Emmerich’s Godzilla as they are with the upcoming one.

But yeah, they call Emmerich’s nuclear iguana "Zilla", because the "God", the divine thing that made Godzilla special was missing. And I think the line from the new movie which calls Godzilla a God, not a monster, is a little nod to that.
