UPDATED INFO:

Team: Double/Filia/Big Band

MAIN THINGS TO WORK ON:

-Learn what other characters have to stop my approach and get some character-specific approach strategies.

-Following that, be aware of what options other characters have in any given situation and be able to adjust my gameplan accordingly.

-Practice being able to PBGC 100% of the time, it's very key to escaping pressure that is otherwise impossible to deal with.

-Don't always pushblock, airblocking into landcanceling is a very powerful tool for dealing with a lot of characters.

Other problem points:

-Need to hitconfirm more, I get a lot of stray hits that I could probably do more off of. I've gotten better at this I think.

-Stop upbacking as much, it's a bad habit. (Have gotten better but still do this more than I should)

-Vary my options for approach/opening people up, I go for airdashes and overheads pretty much all the time, I should use things like run up -> low more, and generally play more of a ground game (I've gotten much better about opening people up on the ground but I am still airborne more than I probably should be)

-Absolute guard to block high/low. I do at least attempt this almost every time i PB now, with varying degrees of success.

- Use normals to anti-air on defense. I have gotten better about using s.hp to antiair as Filia but this could still use work.

Old stuff:
I thought this would be a good time to make one of these, ironically I was waiting until I reached a certain threshold of not being awful to do this, I'm not sure why but hey here we are.

Team: Filia/Big Band, it's been that way for a while and I have no intention of dropping either one nor going to a trio, HOWEVER I still do want to pick up a 3rd character just so I have the option of playing a different team depending on matchup (I haven't really been to any tournaments so I'm not sure if you usually have to lock in a team for that or what, maybe this will all end up being pointless). In particular, vs parasouls I have a hard time with this team so I'm trying to learn a new character (probably Eliza) to sub in for filia (probably) or big band (less likely because I like band anchor, but possible).

Things to learn:

Filia:
-Full combo off of throw/gregor, I don't really have one and I basically just s.hp into a chain ending in j.mp so I can fastfall and reset, which not only means I'm unable to kill in that situation if they aren't dead by the rest point, but also means I have exactly one reset off of throw/gregor and it's on the ground so I can get reversaled.
-Learn to play against Parasoul, this probably involves developing a ground game and actually using ringlet once in a while.
-Stop being Wing using Updo so liberally, I started to do it because when I started using it it actually worked, and reinforced a bad habit for me I think. It's a useful tool but if I get read I'm screwed.

Big Band:
-LEARN AN OTGLESS COMBO. I can't get the timing quite down for some reason on them but right now my only combo is the day 1 basic, which I have 2 resets off of and they are both icky's. Going along with this:
-Learn oki stuff, I'm studying alexo's steam guide which I think has a lot of helpful stuff on big band but I haven't really put it into practice.
-Use air normals that aren't j.lk to contest.

General:
-Reliable PBGC, I can sometimes do it but a lot of the times I fuck up the timing or the input because I'm panicking, which leads into my 2nd note:
-Don't panic. When I get pressured or I'm in a situation where I don't really know what's going on I just sort of try to press good buttons, I need to keep a clear head and be more aware of the situation I'm in.
-Don't upback so damn much, I keep cornering myself or getting hit. I (think at least) have gotten better about not upbacking in the corner as a default option, but I still do it more than I should, and again I keep doing it at neutral/midscreen when I probably don't have to.
-Get out to locals, I live in mid/north VT so the closest SG scene is about 4 hours away but I'm hoping to get down to GU more often (starting with this Saturday) to get not-online experience.
-block high :^)

I did a set with @SkullMan (am i supposed to tag people when I post their sets? well I'm doing it now anyway) and I've just gotten OBS set up to record so I recorded it. Problem is, I forgot the drive I was writing to only had a couple gigs free and midset the drive filled up. No big deal, I thought, I'll just switch drives, but as it turned out the first part of the set, the file got corrupted or something because the drive was too full. A M A Z I N G

so here's what I could salvage, and I've made sure to record to a different drive with plenty of free space in the future.

notes (some of these will be on parts that got lost):
-LEARN A FULL COMBO OFF OF GREGOR I LITERALLY LOST A GAME BECAUSE I DIDN'T KNOW ONE, I had been focusing on other things but really it's time to just get down to it
-again, don't upback at neutral because I will corner myself
-use ringlet instead of h. hairball off of throw, I use h. hairball cause that's what i learned when I was starting but ringlet is more reliable, I just need to break that habit
-corner awareness, i.e. don't call assists near a corner because I am playing duo and getting doublesnapped is basically gg
-keep doing what works. this seems obvious but a lot of games that set (most of which weren't shown) parasoul opened with napalm shot, and I would beat it with jump forward and j.mp on the way down. even though he didn't mix up the opening until later I stopped using that opening and I shouldn't have if it was going to keep working. I also didn't learn until later that he would ALWAYS block instead of tech off the big band reset, so throw would always work. I kept trying to mix it up and it didn't work (especially since getting teched is a lot better than getting blocked)

overall it was a good set though, I was a little disheartened because I had sort of thought I was good at reading and therefore would come out ahead in long sets, but the last few ft20s I've done (this one, and a set with CaioLugon a few days ago that I didn't record) both ended 20-10 but started out 6-6 or 7-7, so I must be doing something that makes me lose out the longer sets go on and I'm not entirely sure yet what it is

It's been way too long since I updated this, I should probably try to get into a regular schedule. Anyway, since my last post:

-went to GU monthly, it was a lot of fun and was my first time playing locals so I think I got good experience. Though to be honest I think some people over-exaggerated how big of a difference local vs online play was, it didn't seem like that big of a difference with the people I played against (though maybe that's just because we're all northern east coast anyway so the connection is fine?)
-did a set w/ fenster that I recorded but will probably not be able to upload just because it'll take like 20 hours that effectively no one in my house will be able to do anything else on the internet during
-did sets w/ worldjem and deer that I just forgot to record

Looking back here I think I have improved on just about everything I noted from my set with dmoney, most of my general stuff from 1st post still needs work but i have improved in some aspects (big band oki, combos off gregor with filia, not going for updo frametraps every other blockstring).

My games at GU that I lost, as much as I hate "blaming" it on this, I think tournament nerves and my first time playing locally had a lot to do with it. Not that my opponents weren't good, especially vs serious eagle I felt I got really outplayed, but I could have done better. That said, I definitely need to work on my neutral and learning what normals to use to contest at what points.

After my set with worldjem he gave me a lot of good advice about not relying too much on assist when filia is out, and playing more of a ground game WITH my assist when big band is out. My solo filia neutral definitely still needs work but I tried to put what I learned about big band ground game into practice in my set vs deer and I thought it went very well, I was able to use hairball to set up "win-neutral" (i.e. worst case scenario is advantage for neither player, best case is a hit) situations reasonably effectively. My spacing with big band has also gotten better I think.

Things to improve from this point:
-Filia neutral game, as much as I've tried to work on it I'm still too reliant on beat extend to get a hit a lot of the time, so I need to practice spacing, pokes, etc with Filia solo.
-Don't upback (again)
-Play a better ground game with Big Band without an assist. If I have hairball to pressure I've been doing a better job about using it and not just j.lk, but if I'm down to solo band most of that goes out the window (because the win/neutral setups I used no longer have hairball to make the worst case neutral).
-Get some new resets for both characters, mine are getting stale I feel, and I also don't have any mashproof setups.

As a side note, I've started to run double/eliza as a 'b'-team, so far only doing it in quick matches but I DEFINITELY don't know neutral with double at all, so I'll try to look into that too. I really like double's resets though, and she has fun setups with h osiris.

-did a set w/ fenster that I recorded but will probably not be able to upload just because it'll take like 20 hours that effectively no one in my house will be able to do anything else on the internet during

Just from the upload? I can understand the upload + processing taking that long, but the upload shouldn't be that long. If you want a tip, you could always look into compressing your own videos beforehand as well so that it'll change a 2 hour upload into a 30 min upload (thats from my experience, ymmv).

When you say you want to improve your BB ground game, have you tried using updo assist instead of hairball? BB + something that covers the air makes opponents either run into the assist or force them to the ground which is where you'd want to play that ground game. When I was learning BB, I did the same and thought it was useful, though eventually moved away from those assists both when I was okay with my ground game and when I found out I liked a different assist better.

And in any case, I can tell you from experience that BB + french twist is REALLY annoying for BB block strings and french twist can be used for certain BB conversions too which I love. Its something worth playing with other than hairball, which I never really liked that move for BB.

Big Band with a low assist is straight up the dumbest. I even ran Peacock c.HP for a while despite how terrible that assist is at doing anything. If my second character had a good low hitting assist I would be using it all the time

Thanks for the input everyone!

When you say you want to improve your BB ground game, have you tried using updo assist instead of hairball?.

I'll try the compression thing to see if it will help, thanks for the tip. As for using updo, I ran that originally (before hairball) but in my experience because the horizontal hitbox was (relatively) narrow and the bug where updo was called out more forward was fixed, the assist wouldn't really cover any ground that big band's hurtbox wasn't already in. I can see the uses for it but personally I didn't like it.

French twist was one of the assists I considered when talking with worldjem about updo replacements, he recommended hairball and I have come to like hairball a lot but I'll try experimenting with c.mk to see if I like it more.

I also took your advice fenster about using horus instead of spiral as my eliza assist with double on that team and it's definitely working well so thanks for that too.

so I compressed the video in advance which brought it down to a 6 hour upload which I did last night:

Haven't rewatched it yet to remind myself of what I was going to note but I DID note some things from last night's skullbats, namely that I need to start playing "seriously" again. I've been spending most of my sg time recently on quickmatch trying to improve my eliza/double team, and last night I just did a lot of stupid shit that I shouldn't have. Getting only 5 hours of sleep the night before probably didn't help either, but I definitely think I need to start playing against good players again, especially with CB only a few weeks away now.

o yeah i remember stuff now, shoutouts to fenster for being the only person I've played against who's scarier when he's down to his anchor than when he still has a full team. As far as personal improvements I don't have a lot specific but I really don't have any idea what I'm supposed to do against parasoul. The specifics I did note though:

-PBGC is not a "free out" to pressure, fenster was very good about spacing himself so that there was no real way out other than to wait for him to make a mistake or get a hard read. Conversely, I should probably learn to space too.
-Something Negus said on ask.fm about making your burst baits not relieve your opponent of pressure if they don't fall for it. I dont have any big band burst baits that don't involve jumping back which basically gave fenster a free out when i went for them.
-I've gotten better about using filia's jab to try to beat out stuff since it's faster than her c.lk, but I haven't quite gotten there with big band yet. There's a decent amount of stuff (multiple filia combos/resets, big band corner combo) that I've gotten pretty down in training mode but in real matches I default to the same old stuff and I just have to focus on trying to implement what I've been practicing since that's the only way I'll get used to it in real matches.
-EDIT: this one i forgot about, but stop using c.mk as filia in blockstrings because I get pbgc'd into throw 90% of the time and it's really just a matter of working on execution to switch from crouching to standing quicker. A bunch of other execution errors in that match but I think I've gotten better at not fucking up my inputs (as much anyway)

Overall I do think I've improved fundamentally since that set, but again the real issue is that I don't really know what to do against parasoul. Also with regard to filia assists for bigband, I have been playing with c.mk but honestly I like hairball a lot more, c.mk is good for setups but I think bigband can use the help for his neutral more and hairball lets me play more offensively. Maybe I'm just bad at using c.mk in neutral but I think i'm going to go back to hairball assist.

worked today on trying to poke more with filia j.lp and had a few of those moments of clarity where it's like "wow yeah i can see how this can be good" which is nice. Normally I wouldn't make a post here without a set or something big happening but I also worked today on converting filia throw meterlessly with ringlet and I finally got the wavedash into iad j.mp down which I'm happy enough about to post for so yeah

set with @fenster that I didn't record cause I didn't know if it was causing the lag that we were having (it wasn't, but I never started the recording again whatever)

-how the FUCK do i approach robo as big band, h beam ruins me
-reset my macroed team on beta to have hairball assist because i was using c.mk assist that set to absolutely no effect
-don't try to use ringlet after even thinking about dashing forward because it will come out as updo always, is there a way to do the input differently to change this because that was frustrating as hell

nothing else really stood out to me as obvious stuff to fix, i tried to use iad throw at neutral more and i feel like it went ok, just need to pay more attention to the situation and not just press random buttons (the lag didn't really help though)

things i found in training:

-filia: you can confirm ringlet into gregor, waiting to confirm makes it use your otg but I can just use the throw conversion, hopefully this helps vs parasoul
-bigband: been using the thing @Zevak found about e-brake on m/h a-train being 3 frames more positive to do soundstun-less conversions of throw and it's way easier this way, haven't done the instant j.mk stuff with it yet but at least I don't drop the conversion which is a start

haven't done the instant j.mk stuff with it yet but at least I don't drop the conversion which is a start

I wouldn't actually bother with the J.MK unless you are in a strange position from the throw that wouldn't allow you to follow up from a groundbounce from his normal BNB rather than just doing the J.HK right next to them with J.MK into it. Just use the extra frames to follow up a throw with Cr.MK and get extra damage from the reduced scaling. The J.MK doesn't actually seem to net big band by himself more damage. Do sick low/overhead/throw mixups off of throw sometimes though!

^^^^ Seriously that, as I'm sure @Fedora_Ninja knows, for some reason 90% of people upback after throw -> e brake and holy crap it's hard to not hold upback there D:

Yeah, I honestly wish people would downback more just because of how dumb throw > e-brake > throw is. But people almost always get caught with c.lk, so I'll just take the unscaled reset.

It's kinda funny. You get the c.lk link after ebrake, cool. Combo > some other reset. You miss the link, no worries. They're probably upbacking and you get a not-so-scaled combo > some other reset.

Casuals with @fenster again today, upload pending. Quit a bit early out of frustration with my pad, lk button is sticking and wouldn't register a 2nd press if it was too close to a previous one, so stuff like IAD j.lk j.hk > c.lk, or j.hp adc j.lk j.hk > c.lk would never work. Regardless, I got a lot of good experience I think and tried out some new things.

-Tick throws are really good, every time I could actually do them I think they worked, definitely something I should start doing since at this point my filia resets have basically degraded to 50-50s off j.mp into fastfall.
-Used some of the new reset points I'd been practicing with big band, seemed to work well but I do need to work on the timing a bit better probably.
-Didn't use e-brake throw conversions since I didn't feel confident enough yet but I do want to start using them in "real" matches.
-Ringlet spike is something I've been using a bit more recently, especially since Filia's air normals are more and more outclassed (thanks eliza). Requires a bit of a read but I felt like I got alright mileage out of it.
-I've been adopting a bit more of a patient big band if I don't have assist to pressure, trying to get reads, and it sort of worked but I think for that to really be effective I need to work on training my opponent more.

Overall I think the set was a good test run for some things I've been working on, once my new pad gets here and I can actually otg off of filia's j.hk without dropping shit it'll be a lot better obviously.

Skullbats top 8 just got done! Got 3rd this season, was 4th last season so making progress at least? I might do a mcpeanuts-kinda commentary thing and analyze my matches that I got on stream because I didn't record any of them myself, but for now:

http://www.twitch.tv/eightysixed/v/5152974 1st match vs duck is 4:45, 2nd match vs dag is 1:21:00, 3rd match vs mpgame is 1:28:30

-keep an eye out for reversal opportunities, I am definitely scared to do it vs really good people (like duck) because I assume they're always baiting it/using a reversal-safe setup, but in retrospect I probably could have been doing it more
-for some reason the timing I thought I'd gotten used to on low reset w/ big band wasn't right (I did it too early and triggered IPS pretty much every time I went for it), I probably need to try this on other characters. I made a few other IPS errors that I shouldn't have, need to pay more attention in my combos
-I got airthrown a lot by duck but I dunno if that's something to really improve on since it's hard to see coming, just something to note that w/ double he likes to airthrow

-block high vs eliza, every time i fight eliza i think "man i keep getting hit high i should block high" and then i start to but then fall back into the downback habit
-more working on delaying timing to make things actually resets and not extra hits on the end of a semi-combo
-I keep trying to make IAD airthrow work and it doesn't, I need to either space it better or hold off on it
-just stop using cymbals if they aren't at least like 3/4 screen away cmon it never ends well

-A lot of the mpgame match was due to lack of robo xp I think, which isn't really something Ive been working on since I won't need it for CB but when I get back I'll probably do some sets with him since he has the best robo I've seen (sorry fenster)

in general stuff:
-I have practiced 3 filia combos with multiple reset points in each, and I use one 85% of the time, one 15%, and one basically never. Really need to stop defaulting to that one combo.
-Still burning up otg when converting off beat extend when I don't need to at all
-elky said use L airball to get in, at the time I didn't think it would have helped but in retrospect it probably would have yeah

Overall though I was definitely happy with my performance, mpgame was SUPER on point today so shoutouts to him and duck is duck (despite a bit of playing with his food), but I was worried after being put in losers that early that I'd be out since I basically had to fight through a parasoul gauntlet to get to loser's finals. Obviously this didn't happen, I feel like I've been getting better about filia j.lp pokes and playing the neutral better, and my big band DEFINITELY did work today, I'm happy with my progress with him.

Last post before CB! Shoutouts to @Zephyrel for letting me on his kumite, I ended up doing mcpeanuts commentary because it was more recent and wasn't a shutout like my games from skullbats top 8, I'll still probably do it on the skullbats games but not before CB since it'll be too long to upload. Anyway,

man i hate the sound of my own voice

Haven't ever done this kind of analysis before, honestly I was kind of just pointing out things that I had noticed while I was doing the set but I think it was a helpful experience to go over it like this anyway.

Flying out to CB tomorrow, I feel good about my progress over the last month, I think I've improved a lot and have a good shot at doing well. Hopefully I can do well enough to not have any regrets.

Back from CB, had a great time, got a bit of input from worldjem but most of what I learned was through experience with people. My problem seems to stem from an overreliance on DP assist. I did a lot of games with wing and I've noticed that a lot of filia players, since you want to be on the offense, run an assist that covers a lot of horizontal space (napalm shot, bomber, LnL, etc.) instead of a DP assist which is more of a defensive option. In an effort to both decrease my reliance on DP assist and give myself an assist that lends itself more to an offensive playstyle, I'm dropping Big Band (for now). I really like him, but I don't think he's a great fit for the kind of filia I want to play. I really enjoy the setups with hairball but I don't like the team as much with Filia on point and I really enjoy filia point. I'd been using double/eliza as a subteam and I was having fun with double, so I think I'm going to try filia/double (like the cool kids are using) and see how it works for me.

You definitely are grossly overdependent on the DP assist, did nobody tell you this any sooner?? I thought it was a known thing, like it is for Stuff.. hmpf

Rather than choosing the next assist, I'd recommend to simply play Solo Filia for a while.
Improve your Filia neutral/offence/defence, get out of the habit of mashing on assist everywhere,
and check what you actually have issues with, then look for what assist fixes the things you found

In gllt's Training Diary I made a post (scroll down a bit and open the spoiler) regarding my thoughts on picking an assist for my Parasoul.
I have since vastly changed my team, but the general thought process stayed the same.
Have a character - play it - see exactly what you are missing - look for characters/assists that fix the thing.
Just because "most Filias" run X doesn't mean that X helps YOU do what you want to do;
It is very dependent on playstyle in all its forms (general gameplan, when you like to take which degree of risks, what buttons you enjoy pressing, your movement, bla bla)

I mean of course this weekend wasn't the first time I've been told I rely too much on DP assist, but it's something I thought I had been getting better about when I obviously am not. I had been doing some solo filia to work on her neutral and the main thing I thought she was missing was an assist to make pressure for me to get in (hence bomber) but you are right that I should probably just play solo for a while if only just to work on not relying on assist calls in any form.

So haven't played a TON of SG this week since I was pretty burnt out from combo breaker but I've got in some good exp with filia/double. Haven't really gotten into the habit of calling assist offensively yet so honestly even with the assist I've been getting better at "solo" filia neutral. Double is really fun though and honestly I'd probably rather learn to play with this assist than try to find a different one since I don't think there's really anyone else in the cast I'd enjoy as much that would make a good 2nd. I've also gotten more used to mixing up my combos and resets to not be so predictable (at least with filia, my double resets are still super basic and I only have one double combo atm).

New notes to improve on:
-Learning neutral game with both characters, ESPECIALLY double of course but my filia neutral can always improve.
-Learn when's good times to call bomber, I haven't quite gotten used to using it in the best situations.
-Double combos that aren't barrel loop, I tried to learn some of the cilia slide ones but haven't quite gotten it yet.

Ive been getting out of practice with doing sets with people and not just QM (and so since QM has been pretty bad since the free weekend it's basically amounted to me not playing much SG) but still working on filia/double. Been using eliza/band as a secondary team and it's alright, I need to learn better stuff with eliza but I figured I should be working on my main team first. Since last post I've learned some good neutral stuff with double, still no new combos but I've gotten some good resets/burst baits with my barrel loop. Found some new stuff with filia which is pretty cool. Getting more used to bomber assist instead of beat extend too and I think it has made my filia neutral better.

Did a FT10 with @Fosh, and what I learned basically is I need to stop dropping shit. I keep dropping simple shit in combos I've been doing for months consistently, I go back to lab to try to get it down and I can do it fine in training but then I have random drops in actual play. I guess the solution is just to play more?

Todo:
-stop dropping combos
-bait reversals more if I see someone keep doing them
-sort of related to the previous point, but probably learn some burst baits on the ground. Fosh was reversaling like crazy that match and I think I hit him with a burst bait only once, and it was when he was super low and I probably could have killed without the reset so he was just mashing out of desperation. I'm thinking it's probably because when you're in the air there's not really any reason to try to reversal if your character has no air reversals. So if I can work out some grounded, or at least low to the ground enough that it might catch someone trying to reversal, burst baits they would probably work better.

So I watched my set from dekillschool finally, there was some stuff that was easy to take away that I could work on but some stuff I really had to watch again to see what they were talking about. The set was SUPER useful and I'm super grateful to sage and sonicfox for hosting it.

-HITCONFIRM (or use more confirmable strings maybe? i dunno). Sage was talking about like "you go for too many resets" but it wasn't really that I was intentionally resetting more that I didn't properly respond to getting a hit. When I actually confirmed I could get like 4k pre-reset but I got a lot of stray hits that I didn't do anything with that I probably could have.

-Don't upback by default, it's a bad habit brought on by playing against too many people who don't throw much. Given the choice between taking 5k damage pre-reset because I got opened up by low, or taking 2k damage pre-reset because of throw scaling, the answer should be obvious.

-The land cancel stuff to punish is the #1 "new tech" I came away with, it makes a lot of MUs (ESPECIALLY parasoul) a lot easier. Definitely need to pay attention to when I should and should not pushblock.

-Use run up low more, it's a mixup option I haven't really been using. Sage (and sonicfox but I felt it was more prominent with sage) noticed that I basically just tried to airdash in every time and once he reacted to that I didn't really get anywhere.

-Be more aware of other character's defensive options and get more character-specific with my approaches. I got my jump-in stuffed by fukua c.hp more than I want to admit, and running into lugers...we aren't gonna talk about that.

-Absolute guard to block high/low.

-Standard execution problems I've been having, need to work on. I grinded out getting monster after L bomber which I couldn't get the timing on before. Still don't have the double level 5 combo down yet. (noting here so I don't have to look at stream again: lp lp mk hk / lp lk mk hk / lp mk hk, sage said a couple of different things so I'll just have to practice with it)

I'll probably edit the OP with this stuff because the OP is pretty old and not really relevant, and this experience was SUPER useful, by far the most I've learned about this game at once since I started playing. Shoutouts to sage and sonic again for hosting it, I've said this about 30 times so far but it really was unbelievably helpful just hearing what you guys had to say. It was also reasonably confidence boosting because I feel like I could be a lot better by changing relatively few things.

Two posts close to each other I don't normally like to do this but wanted to note that I watched @Dolfinh 's video on analyzing matches and there was a lot of interesting stuff, I definitely should get into the habit of recording the sets I do even if I don't plan to upload them (which I often don't because my internet's upload speed is ass), and also noting things I do well because I do tend to focus on my weaknesses since they are the things I would change but noting your strengths as well is good for keeping a positive mindset as well as explicitly reinforcing good behaviors. Honestly taking notes on your opponent's strategies seems a bit excessive and a lot of it I remember like halfway through the first game playing them again, but maybe I'll try it.

(unrelated but something I want to write down before I forget again, using normals as anti-airs is something I don't do at all and I should more, wingzero and peck both used filia s.hp as anti-air against me a lot and it was good)

It's mostly for me to have at offline events. I would not have beaten Negus at NWM if I hadn't updated some of my notes on him & jotted some stuff that Skarmand told me right before i played. It was also helpful in playing Skarmand although I played super nervous that set ;-;

Also because I always take some notes when i play sets with people I can just copy paste them to their "file."

finally getting around to watching Wing's CB games, takin some notes

Resets:
-s.HP IAD j.lp for some neat L/R stuff

-j.lp after a restand for ambiguous stuff

-he uses the j.mp fastfall that I know, but it seems like more frequently he uses the j.mk fastfall with j.hp that I know about but can't seem to get, need to ask him about that. Having a couple of fastfalls makes it harder for the opponent to read it coming.

-tick throws, tick lows, etc. (c.lk is +6 on block CRAZY)

Overall conclusions: I think the key things to take away are 1) Wing doesn't do anything *too* fancy with his resets, this isn't meant to be a jab at his skill level, I believe he is the best filia player for sure, but rather to reinforce something I'd been learning; that is, you dont need crazy X-way mixups just a solid number of resets that are ambiguous. And 2) left/right stuff is something wing does a LOT, I assume because it's harder to mash out of than high/low, and I don't do it hardly at all. I should start.

adc lp lk vs adc whiff throw for reset? what's the difference, I should find out

Combos:
1:47 vs duck is cool, he often resets off that too so maybe I can try to learn that, I'd been learning a combo that's the same for the first 70% or so but it didn't seem to do significantly more damage

Neutral:
im too tired to pay enough attention to this, will edit post later when I can pay attention to things

also this isn't something I paid as much attention to when I was watching the match live for obvious reasons, but wow Kai is a really good commentator. Animated enough to keep it hype always and never gets boring, and also a good enough player to provide insightful comments that aren't just "oh it got blocked there's the punish oh and there he gets the grab" etc.

Skullbats from this week. More detailed notes later but man this was disappointing. Felt like I took 10 steps back from where I was before, started falling into a lot of the same old habits (even went 2-3 which was my standard score in skullbats for a very long time) and making mistakes I know I'd fixed before. Not sure if it's just due to lack of practice recently or what but I definitely need to start doing more sets with people and getting more practice because this was kind of embarrassing.

game 1 vs @iDaNtE-_-_-

00:08 So we start out with what will continue to be a theme here which is me getting crossed up by blitzer constantly and not knowing what to do about it. Can I jab on the way down?

00:40 I should notice he tends to reversal with 1 meter quite a bit through the set

01:10 supposed to be a dash there RIP

01:18 This happens a lot more later too, but I cannot use luger here apparently. I tested it in training mode and it's supposed to be a true blockstring but I keep accidentally delaying it too much and he gets out of it with sweep every time. Even if I timed it better he can still pbgc it, I probably need a better Double blockstring.

01:22 don't upback against beowulf with a bar

The beginning of game 2 seems to be lagging in the video but it wasn't laggy in actual match

01:48 Shouldn't be jumping back when I call bomber, I lose all pressure and chance to confirm that way, even though it's invuln the point of using bomber instead of beat extend is to not use my assist so defensively

01:50 j.hp trades is this the anti-blitzer tech

02:51 oh my god fuck that sweep

02:55 DON'T UPBACK AGAINST BEOWULF WITH A BAR

Switch to big band because I don't think either Filia or Double is working too well against beowulf but I wanted to keep filia for some reason, even though I win the next 2 games I probably should have just done solo band, or at the very least I should have switched teams after game 1 because I can't play against beo as filia/double at all

04:19 thank you based c.mk hits, fuck armored normals

6:30 I haven't done filia/bb in a while and I forgot to change my assist, I thought I had hairball because that's what I always ran so I called updo from that far back thinking it was hairball obviously it doesn't work out so well

7:07etc should have done extend into brass earlier probably, I can't brass because of sweep and I can't cymbals because I get high risk manoeuvred if I jump so I wasn't really sure how to chip him and he almost won because of me not knowing what to do

8:27 can't do steps either god this sweep is bodying me

8:45 I wasn't actually mashing I saw that movement and thought he was trying to meaty hop so I did reversal and it was a safejump so good stuff by him

Takeaway: I don't really know the matchup vs beowulf at all, I beat iDante before just out of knowing how to neutral better but either I played much worse or he's playing a lot better (probably both, I felt like I played badly today but he's DEFINITELY using sweep more and making good reads) and it wasn't enough. Double I think I just gotta cry and play big band instead but there's probably more stuff I can be doing as filia. Other than that I had some combo drops that probably lost me some games or at least some punishes, should probably go into lab and see what I can land cancel vs beo because I felt like I was pushblocking too much too.

Game 2 was vs kiyobi but I didn't bother with recording because it was a pretty clean 3-0, I didn't make any real mistakes to try to improve on (also I did the winnie corner burst with s.hk psych for the first time in a real match so that was cool)

game 3 vs. @JELIFISH19 (starts at 8:58)

9:55 pretty sure even if he jumped forward (which is what I was trying to read) and pressed antyhing I still would have gotten counterhit, that was terrible spacing to try to airthrow

10:20 luckily filia knocks him out of this but I learn later and just do the updo on incoming and get the followup

I do a good job of countercalling in this set I think

12:30 monster didn't come out AS USUAL, i keep doing the input WAY later than I have to to get it to come out, even after practicing it in training a ton its just that the timing isn't visually intuitive for me so I forget

I feel like I did the thing josh was talking about where I would after airthrow go into the same setup but then go for a burst bait, when I should have just kept doing airthrow until he teched it. Especially because parasoul has nothing to mash in the air so worst case scenario is tech back to neutral, while I was already resetting to neutral when I did the burst bait.

14:33 remember when I said I learned my lesson later well it didn't happen yet

15:33 shouldn't be calling assist in that situation at all that very nearly became catastrophic

16:00 that was an intentional frametrap but 1) I didn't realize I hadn't done anything I couldn't make safe yet, so it was a bad idea to go for it anyway, and 2) fenrir was a shit move, I just wanted to do most damage as I could but didn't realize I had 2 bar and could have done gregor->fenrir to kill, overall the whole thing was bad awareness

19:30 he has really good BB frame traps this set

19:50 why am I crouchblocking whenhe's in the air anyway cymbals are gonna get me

20:19 hmm so obviously this wasn't a blockstring because he pushblocked to make space but I wonder if that's why my lugers against idante weren't working either

Takeaways: go for a setup that keeps working, get better awareness of situation/neutral.

game 5 vs @herbvijkl (game 1 missing because I forgot to record and game 2 has no music because I forgot to start it) (starts at 20:50)

21:05 could have confirmed j.mp here, from this height I couldn't go right into ground string but what's the best option then? j.hk into otgless combo? probably

22:07 this was COMPLETELY IMPROMPTU and I'd bet it's double specific, need to learn an actual doublesnap combo even if this one worked

22:22 even though I got the ch the c.lk never came out, if it had that would have been game right there

man I just completely forgot how to approach parasoul as filia huh

23:53 hey I did the thing cool, still don't really have a combo off j.hp yet, need to get one

24:05 AGAIN no c.lk, and I panic and go into s.hp even though s.hk into combo would have of course killed

24:21 this luger was supposed to be jump into j.lp but apparently I was holding forward and so got luger when I did the upward motion

24:55 actually crying irl, LITERALLY lost the set because of a fucking dropped combo

getting airthrown a ton wow maybe I should tech one of these days

26:23 noconfirm

29:26 haha another lost game off a drop amazing

overall: This was also the last game so I was feeling kinda tired and depressed, it's 3rd here because my game with josh didn't take well with windows movie maker at first so I put this in before set with josh. But this here was more of the stuff that I knew I had to work on recently, i.e. not dropping double combos and confirming hits better. Also how to approach parasoul as filia is something I completely forgot.

game 4 vs @joshb911 (starts at 30:15)

I'm kind of tired and I repeat the same mistakes a lot so I'm not going to do timestamps for this one but I think because i repeated a lot of mistakes this will be the set I can take the most away from. I jump too much, this was a thing in other games too but here he read airthrow and because he didn't have to IAD for it he could get a full combo every time.

ok i lied one timestamp 32:52 WHY DID YOU USE THAT SUPER I WAS WAY ABOVE YOU

threw away games on combo drops again, but the main takeaways from this set I think are 1) Josh took our advice and started doing the same setup as long as it was working, problem was it never stopped working and I didn't adapt. I need to pay more attention to when he's doing the same thing and respond to it accordingly, and 2) this was also a thing in my other games but I'm putting it here because it was really noticeable in constrast with his filia: all that stuff I said before about using different combos/resets I completely forgot today, did the same combo and reset at the same point with the same low every time, sometimes I threw in an overhead but that's it. I should have thrown more, I should have reset at different points, I should have used different combos. The duck combo starter is a lot more conducive to resets than the one I was using and Josh really proved it here. The set against Herb, I tried doing what josh had been doing with quick resets off the duck combo starter and it won me game 1 handily, too bad I didn't keep doing it.

Overall takeaways seem to be what I already know, and then some stuff I forgot and need to do again, but the main things to work on:

-use a variety of combos and resets, I still know them I just forget to do them
-not drop double combos, I can do them fine in the lab but I keep dropping them so obviously I need to get the timing more reliably
-confirm hits, learn some combos off different stray hits (notably filia j.mp and double j.hp)
-be more aware of what's happening in neutral

ok just took a look only at your set vs joshb911

I'll only comment on your side of things.

For one.
you don't always need to jump with filia. Use s.hp once in a while its good i swear.
I would recommend you learn your reset points and when and how to reset. This comes with knowing your opponent of course.

You lose games due to trying to do the long combo when in reality you could've just done a quick ABC into car into DHC and win the match. The goal is to win. you win by being efficient in this case and doing a unnecessary long combo does not equate to efficiency.

on the last game you went straight into Lvl 3 which you had 4 bars and could've done gregor into lvl 3 or even a simple j.mk, adc, airgrab like you did before and secured the win.

Most of the time you lost and got reset was either because you lost to typical downback+assist or you kept jumping ALOT.

If anything my main advice is to get better ground game and learn your normals and how to AA.

Now this is just an observation but do you ever press buttons on opponents wake up or was that in response to me reversing you quite a bit? Also you never seem to reversal yourself or was that again an adaptation?

I'm usually hesitant to reversal, if I see the opponent is going for setups I can reversal out of often then I'll do it but yesterday I was just to scared to press any buttons on my wakeup, with regards to opponent wakeup I'll have to watch it again but I felt like when I got the burst "hard" knockdown and could actually play oki I would be going in hard, if I wasn't doing it last night then it was abnormal for me I think. With filia though I don't really get a lot of chances to play oki unless opponent is cornered.

ft30 with pet ( @Barkynobiteme ) today, recorded it all but it fucked up because I forgot how much space I had on my drive again, luckily we were on beta so I have the replays though. I'll probably do an analysis kinda thing on the first 5 matches or so. Overall even though I ended 4-30 I wasn't too upset with how it went, a lot of the matches were really close and at the end I was doing a lot better so I think I fixed a lot of the things I was doing badly mid-match. Main takeaways:

-pay more attention to what resets my opponents are using and expect them, pet went high as filia almost every time and it took me quite a few games to finally start blocking high
-additionally pay more attention to what my opponents default blocking options are, I would go for throw reset even when he was upbacking every time and again it took me longer than I would have liked to adapt
-and at the risk of repeating myself, adapt to what my opponent is doing faster. I think a lot of it was that pet was really good at double's neutral to the point that he was doing things I hadn't really played against before but I did a lot of the same stuff and got hit by the same stuff for a while before learning.

So all of this is really, "pay more attention and adapt faster". I'll also probably try to steal a few of his filia resets and double conversions that I thought were cool.

note so i don't forget: with double/filia in corner after launch I can do h.luger into monster and instantly DHC into fenrir and combo off of it so that's cool

also been throwing around the idea of bb/filia/double (l extend/c.mk/l bomber) as a team if i decide to run trio, who knows

bleh been sick since Saturday so I haven't been playing a ton, party python happened and I lost both games I played (technically went 1-2 though cause of a bye :^) ), the one vs duck he was just crazy with crossup shit with bypass which was really cool to watch as it beat the shit out of me, but the one vs fuzzy I think I could have won (or at least not been 0-3) if I'd played better. Will watch later to see what I could have done differently, pet was saying in chat that I shouldn't have been trying to air-to-air squigly as much which is probably true. Really need to get the hang of antiair s.hp w/ filia.

In other news, that trio team I mentioned before, while being cool in theory, I'm not as fond of in practice. Mostly because I don't like the trio ratio (though to be fair it could be just being so used to duo), but also because while on paper it has no overlapping assists and any duo of the characters should work OK, in practice I don't think that the benefits of the extra character outweigh the downside of the ratio disadvantage.

Though in playing trio, I've remembered how damn fun big band was, and I think I'm going to pick him up again. Still wanting to shy away from L extend, played around with L brass on Sunday in Skullbats because I thought it would be easier to convert off of than heavier versions but turns out it's not an amazing assist (as probably anyone could have guessed). Did some training mode stuff with H brass and it's pretty easy with Filia j.mp to make a landed H brass not hit them all the way away as long as I'm moving when the brass comes out (which is pretty much what I had to do with L bomber anyway), so I will probably try that more when I'm feeling better.

Also to consider:
-M brass assist, peanuts had talked about it as a zoning assist because it's less negative than H and still has armor, in a rushdown context maybe punishability is less relevant but regardless it's worth noting.
-Even though it offers nothing to neutral game using the c.mk Filia assist in the trio was really fun, calling c.mk + cymbals is fucking savage, as much as I like hairball maybe I should try c.mk again

H brass assist is pretty cool, i forgot about alpha counter into e-brake which is good shit
turns out my otg-less big band combo with all the s.mk and j.lks does less damage than ground chain into j.lp j.mp M cymbals H a-train, which also gives sliding, so that's nice to know my combo is shit (though it does corner carry and has reset stuff which is worth something I suppose)

Another week of Skullbats today, I didn't record anything but I was pretty happy with how it went, still haven't really gotten a ground game down very well but I did some anti-airing and I think my neutral has gotten a lot better. Excecution is pretty much as good as it was before as well. My losses were against heropon, which didn't surprise me in the slightest but I should probably go back and watch it, and serious eagle, who i lost to 3-0 in the actual skullbats but we kept playing after and when we stopped for next round it was 9-8 in his favor so I think I adapted well (though I did have to switch to beat extend assist since brass wasn't helping a lot). Overall though I think I've mostly "returned to form" since my post-CB slump, and hopefully I'll be able to keep improving from here. Been using M Brass instead of H since it's a bit faster (H seemed like it was too easy for people to get around), and I'm pleased enough with the results to keep running it. Also watching Fullbleed's big band is really inspiring and I should probably start trying to learn better BB stuff now that I'm back to playing him.

oh wow I haven't posted anything since last week huh

well since last post:

-I did a ft10 with @Krackatoa, went like 10-7 or 10-8 in his favor, he had some pretty savage pw setups with cilia slide that I think I have a way to defend against but I'd need to practice it (though not really anyone else uses that team)
-ft7 with @fenster, lost 0-7 to his eliza/para duo but I think para came out once, maybe twice, his eliza was definitely doing the work, I cannot defend against that character
-unlocked the sweet BB palette #26 :^)

Last night was Skullbats again, went 4-1 and felt really good about things. Getting better with m brass calls, still jumping too much but I think I'm playing the filia neutral better, did some things in matches that were mostly accidental that ended up actually being useful tech so I learned a few neat things too. My one loss was vs @iDaNtE-_-_- and I don't think it would be too much of a stretch to say that at least 60% of the reason I lost was because I jumped WAY too much and he got a ton of airgrab reads on me, it's not even that I'm upbacking as a default defensive option anymore I just neutral jump a ton and decide what to do from there which I'm seeing more and more is a bad habit. So i would say that is the #1 thing I still need to work on, but again I'm feeling better about my play and I'm happy with how things are going. Gonna be going to GU weekly on Friday and then the slamjammers monthly on Saturday so looking forward to that too.

Had enough people at GU for an 8 man double elim so we did that, I beat @mcpeanuts 2-1 first round and then lost to him 3-2 in losers finals after losing 3-1 to @dMags in winners finals. Seeing as I don't think I'd ever taken more than a game or two off peanuts in a long set (in fact I lost 9-1 in casuals to him right before the tournament) I was quite happy with how I played. Losing to dmags, painwheel is still my kryptonite and I really need to figure out how to fight that character. Some notes/things to improve:

Filia:
-learn 2 fight PW obviously
-Grab more, I do it in resets fine but as a mixup option I don't do it nearly enough. Tic grabs also, I did filia j.lp j.hk against peanuts but on block he would only pushblock the j.hk. I did IAD grab at neutral in casuals vs deer afterwards and it was promising.
-On that topic, because IAD grab is a thing I stopped doing because I did it too much, IAD j.hp is also a thing I went from overusing to never using, I'm using it more now (but sparingly) and it's still super good poke.
-practice corner combos on peacock because I dropped it enough to get visibly angry, I don't think it lost me games today but it should have.

BB:
-Use assist more, I've switched to c.mk because that + cymbals is SAVAGE, but I don't take good advantage of it yet.
-Find way to close gap after hard knockdown faster, I'm never in range to get close enough to do assist mixup oki at midscreen.
-Approach robo/peacock better (though I suspect this involves just having to make a hard read to get knockdown)
-try to find a better airgrab conversion because I catch people with BB airgrab a LOT but never get a ton off of it.
-h step can punish beam super on block its cool

apparently I was overexcited at my victory over peanuts at GU because I lost both my matches at hitbox arena to zoners (one of which was peanuts :^) ). Rewatched the games last night when I got home but it was late and I didnt get a lot out of my match vs lethalmind, but I think if I can figure out what I did wrong there it would help a lot, vs peanuts I choked HARD and threw game 1 but game 2 I got zoned out, definitely need to work harder on learning to play vs zoning than I thought
