Well I heard this JRPG goteen popular. I wondered how good it is?

A friend gifted me this, but haven't had a chance to play it yet. I'm down for some turn based action and dungeon crawling, just hope the system is more tactics oriented then grinding.

You will be dissapointed.

HDN is mainly your standard turn based combat dungeon jrpg with VN elements where the main premise is the characters are the caricatures of all things related to the gaming industry. Noire for example is playstation consoles, Vert is Xbox, Blanc is Nintendo, etc. The story in the games is usually lighthearted comedy toned.
Except Re;birth 2 which decided to take the series to a dark turn where depending on your choices it could end quite violently.

HDN has numerous spin-off titles as well such as the Noire game which is an SRPG, U which is a Musou, PP which is idol simulation, and another two more spin-offs coming too which is all for the Vita. Their latest mainline title was just released for PS4 in JPN fairly recently.

I find the story weak, but with the Re;birth games the gameplay is at least decent and more framerate stable. HDN is also known to recycle assets between the games so you get the feeling of deja vu once you play the numerous games. Series is also heavy with yuri undertones and there are no playable male characters. In fact what little males that are in the game are either very unimportant, a villain, or a combination of both.

It's a 6.5/7 series from someone that played most of the games.

I think the series is 3/10 material. Basically the cod of the anime world right now. Every game is practically the same, even other games completely recycling the system like mugen souls.

I honestly really dislike compile heart and think all of their games are garbage. So take my bias as you will.

I quite agree, though I wondered how this game is so popular?

The games only need to sell a moderate amount to be considered a "success" and the above points literally strike the itch of your average Japanese gaming Otaku consumer. This is why there is like nine Nep games and I doubt they will stop at nine. The West is slowly getting exposed to this series as well with the ridiculous localization speed from IFI recently and of course the PC ports for the mainline games that are being sold cheap on launch.

I've played the first two rebirth games, I find them enjoyable.

I consider it a hit or miss series. It all depends, really.

why does re;birth 2's translation look so much worse than re;birth 1? shit just sounds unnatural if you say it out loud.

It shouldn't be since the Re;birth game localizations were handled by IF rather then the originals that were by NISA. The localization in general is localized memes, 'weeb talk' and other internet talk that can really make you cringe. Maybe it's because the Re;birth 2 script is very different compared to Re;birth 1 in general since 2 tried to take the series to a more dark angle?

re;birth 1 had a good translation that was low on memes and general garbage. dialogue also looked a hell of a lot more natural. re;birth 2 has so much randomly thrown in "wouldjas" and "ain'ts" and it looks terrible.

Too many memes @_@

The only Neptunia game I've played is Victory, but I liked it when I booted it in my PS3.

Re;birth 3 was really good, the best one in terms of content if you ask me.

Producing Perfection sucked.

Action Unleashed is really good.

It's easily one of the best handheld games that I've ever played.

I'd agree if there was more content.I'd love the game if it had more to offer.Let's hope Blanc's game steps it up.Looks good so far.

If you liked that then you will most likely like the upcoming Blanc game since it's pretty much an improved U

Yeah, it looks that way.

I wanted Iffy and Compa to be playable in the last game, and lo and behold, they're finally playable in the Unleashed series!

Are they actually playable?I thought they were only assists.

Are they?

Regardless, they're more characters, which is great.

It is a fun series but not for everyone. For the niche audience that it caters to, if you are part of it, you will most likely enjoy it. But to look at it as a game, the main series at least, have a functional bare bones rpg gameplay and that's pretty much it. It's just the usual level up, get good gear and beat up bad guys kind of thing. It's pretty average at best for me.

Probably the main selling point are its characters. The game themselves feel like a visual novel with tons of dialogue and stuff with rpg gameplay rather than the other way around, and I guess it is worth playing just to see how the characters interact with one another as well as seeing how the ridiculous plot unfolds. Don't expect anything deep or groundbreaking with these games and you'll probably have a good time with it.

Wait what? A new main series game got shown? Cool.

EDIT: Oh, the vs. Sega hard girls game? meeeeeeeh.
