Robo Fortune Filia Cerebella
Warning: this is a long ass thread, whoops didn't expect to write this much. Skip to "The Present Time" if you don't want to hear me ramble too much about why I picked a robot and struggle how to play a fighting game

Who am I?

Hi, my (user)name is Jawnsunn. I started playing Skullgirls during its free weekend last year and it was the first fighting game that got me into the genre at a competent level, instead of mashing buttons or pulling off shoryukens. I took a break from the game later down the line due to a number of things such as my start of college, life responsibilities, my initial frustrations with the game, and also as a player wanting to improve. I wanted to write this diary at the start of my skullgirl playin' career but during that time, I really wanted to play more and type less. Thankfully, I learned the importance of reviewing and reflecting, which is why I made this diary now.

So what have I been doing when I was supposed to be writing a training diary?
complaining about this game's fuckin vortex on my personal twitter account that's what hahahahahahaha

During this entire year(from July 2015), I have been steadily learning Skullgirls and about fighting games in general. I started off playing Fillia in this game because well, she was on the cover. I thought postergirls/posterboys were supposed to be the Ryu and Kens of fighting games, but oh wait no I was wrong. It all turned out well in the end though as I learned overtime that I enjoy playing a very aggressive playstyle(and I like winning). From there on, I picked up Cerebella and Robo-Fortune. Bella was initially a temporary pick because people told me to play duo and so I searched for the nearest easy character to pick up and pla- to win with. I really enjoy Bella's footsie and grapple game, but at the time I didn't really get a grasp at either of these aspects at first because I was still inexperienced in fighting games. After grinding a few months of the classic Fillia/Bella duo, I picked up Robo-Fortune not because I enjoy mecha anime(I do), but because I wanted a grasp at the neutral game in Skullgirls. The way Robo-Fortune controls the screen with lasers and catheads are what I really enjoyed about her game plan. She also has(or had because of a new SG patch that's incoming) a decent mixup game with double jump cancels and s.MP. And thus, we've now come full circle and are looking at my current team Robo/Fillia/Bella. Team composition and synergy is still an entirely new concept for me, but I'll write about that later in this thread.

Frustrations as a Player, oh and Street Fighter
The reason I took a long break from the game(although I did log on from time to time to beat people on my friends list up) was because I became increasingly frustrated with my gameplay. I didn't have a clue on resets other characters had, couldn't handle setups that specific teams did, and was just frustrated in how I was supposed to escape pressure in this game. After getting hit with many hitconfirms that led to my doom, I decided to stop playing. Although I wanted to come back, there were other obligations I had to attend to. Also at that time of when I quit, Street Fighter 5 released and at this point, I was ready to play a new fighting game. Although I did hit my frustrations with SF5, mostly with its community and the game itself not being very streamlined for competitive players, I finally understood how to play fighting games. I understood what frame data meant, what meaties were, what a setup means for you as a player and as an opponent, and learned the concept of footsies , although this may be debatable considering SF5 criticism, but I was also watching ST footage at the time. It was just last month when I decided to take another crack at Skullgirls, because after playing 200 hours Chun-li, sometimes you want to get back to what really matters the most: Fillia mixups

The Present Time
At the moment, I'm still playing the same Robo/Fillia/Bella, with H Laser, H Updo, and Copter respectively. The team is pretty fine, Updo gives Robo an existing anti-air, Copter provides lockdown and a way for Robo to summon catheads, and H Laser gives Fillia a tool to get in while it gives Bella a lockdown assist. Although the team seems pretty fine, I can't help but feel like I need something more out of it than assists that cover all of each others weaknesses. At most, I feel the biggest strength this team has is how confidently I can play them, though I'm not going to say I play them well though as I've been doing the same BnB I learned in the compendium thread 6 or 7 months ago. For example, my current Fillia combo I do does pretty alright damage and leads into a few high/low/throw/crossup/crossunder resets, but I'd like something that can lead into ambiguous resets and hard to block setups, with or without my assists. I guess my current dilemma is that I don't feel very creative with how I play this game I guess. Spending a good amount in the Training Room understanding my characters fully should probably be a priority at the moment. In terms of improvement, I finally understand what spacing and frame data mean to me as a player so that helped me alot when it came to learning about SG's neutral game more. I used to run around not knowing what the hell I was supposed to do during round starts when I had a Fillia on point and just made Lock n Load confirms to get in, but now I use IAD j.lp as an approach tool along with Robo/Bella assist calls. Speaking of assist calls, I'm really fucking bad at those sometimes. I end up calling a midscreen updo because I thought the guy was going to fucking jump but oh nice Fillia's dead good job me you killed your best character. I do love throwing Copter out because making them block means they aren't playing the game, which also means that I can get in. Although I still make shitty mistakes, I feel like the time I've put watching, playing, and learning various other fighting games really strengthened my skill and unlike 6-7 months ago where I felt frustrated and plateaued in terms of skill, I feel like I have a clear goal in mind in terms of getting better as a player.

There's also a video archive from my earliest matches from my latest I'm going to list in this post in case you want to see the bit of progress I've made in the time. I have still have lots of recorded matches sitting in the hard drive that I'd like to upload for critique, but I'll be away from that for who knows when due to school starting up again for me this week.

I'm mad af rn, time to type

It's been 2 weeks since my last post. Been working on a lot of things, but mostly worked on my Robo/Fillia/Bella team with H Laser/H Hairball/Excellabella. Compared to my older assists(Laser/Updo/Copter), I sacrifice a decent invincible reversal assist/alpha counter for point Robo and a good lockdown assist for Fillia, for both a good combo ender that gives me 3 roboheads with Excellabella and a horizontal lockdown assist with Hairball. I'm still experimenting with this team and finding out what I can do with 3 roboheads such as throwing missiles after Excellabella/Hairball or using it for mines since its usage is a bit more better in the Beta.

Still been entering online events during the weekends, but my performance in them really bothers me. Entered in Ron's tourney on Saturday and I'm pretty disappointed in my play. Been playing pretty messy and it really costed me during my set with @MNBClawmaster, where I fucking inputted lvl 1 midscreen instead of lvl 3... Let nervousness and frustration get to me, which led to lots of dropped combos, missed throw techs, and panic supers. .

Vs @missingno
- this was my first match in the tournament. getting used to retail robo after playing lots of beta kind of hurts, but i'll adapt.
- I didn't double snap with robo because I don't know a double snap combo with her???
- I put myself in the corner in the second game, sighhhhhhhhh
- Tough time trying to tag Val with my beams. Probably because I'm using H Beam? Really need more variety with how I fire beams and control space.
- I have a habit of pressing buttons because I like to think that I actually have a turn, but oh no it's still not my turn welp
- Also have a habit from transition from downback blocking to high blocking because I think my opponent is going to hit me high when they aren't. At all. They are still on the ground :\
- Switched to Fillia/Robo/Bella in the 4th game because with the way missingno was playing, it was better for me to play with a more mobile point character.
- How did H Danger even hit? I was trying to do a TK H laser there.
- Finally held the momentum in the 5th game. Stopped going in on Parasoul at the end because I was trying to bait out a reversal there.

I have footage of my matches with (not) @Rabbleflaggers and @clawmaster, but they take too long for me, so i'll edit this post when I have the time to upload them. Ron's VODs are up though: https://www.twitch.tv/ronaldokun/v/87242415?t=01h42m21s , https://www.twitch.tv/ronaldokun/v/87242415?t=01h59m26s

General Problems I have:
- my awareness of the screen is kind of terrible? I can't seem identify if a character is going to hit me in the air and overhead me(rabbleflaggers match really showed this). Also was not watching the meter which was why I got by BB super incoming :\
- I got really irritated these matches due to not being able recognize tick throws, air throw resets, and hop overheads. Yelled and slammed my controller when I lost to Clawmaster. Not pissed or frustrated anymore, but I have some thinking to do in terms of dealing with my opponent's gameplan and offense.
- people tell me to mash rocks, but man I play smart people so I don't know if that's ever a good idea for me.
- I need to embrace playing lamer and throwing lasers.
- WHY DO I KEEP AIRDASHING IN FRONT OF PEOPLE? WHY DO PEOPLE NOT DP ME???
- I don't have the timing down for the Lock n Load cancel so then I can catch someone hitting my armor. Thought I had it when Big Band threw out his j.mp/j.hp, but i wasn't aware of how low to the ground he was :(

Maybe I'm just too impatient to wanting to get better or something. I just want to look like I have a fighting chance than look like a guy who just gets beat up all the time in this game.

It takes a while to be competent in this game. Don't sweat it if you get bopped mad hard. Tick throws are a bit trick to recognize. Heck, even I can react to them all the time. When someone is going to hit you in the air, it becomes obvious the more you play and the more practice you get. Concerning hop dashing with Beo, you just need to work on the matchup and your reflexes. Both time and practice will help you achieve better play.

Don't mash. It seems like a cool idea and it seems to work at times, but, you're correct that against experienced players, they will know when you mash and make resets that will allow you to mash while giving them the ability to optimally punish.

Hope this helps.

I greatly enjoy that this post starts with "I'm ANGRY!" I hope it continues.

At this point, I might turn into SGC's Poongko.

yo what's up, it's 2am.

Just finished up my first midterm for the semester on friday, played SG for like 2 hours during that week, played like shit in Ron's friday tournament and @HawtSalsa roasted me. I really don't want to talk about that tournament because I just felt out of my element that week and I'll just be incredibly pissed if I think about them more. If I have anything to say, it's that I really need to work on my zoning with Robo as I'm too used to having a rushdown-esque playstyle with her, which is probably I don't use her with LnL H that often. There's also my throw tech problem, but I feel like its a result of me not making a conscious effort to recognize player tendencies, and also my throw tech reactions are just awful.

So let's talk about Saturday instead. Saturday was cool.

Signed up for n0837's (first?) online tournament and did surprisingly okay on? I went up against myself147 again and lost to him 1-2, then got 2 byes for my first 2 matches in losers. Cool! Then I fought against Royal, Narrowz1, JandreParis, Clawmaster, and Glitch Hooves, all of whom I am familiar with due to Get GR8 and Ron's tournies. I expected for my tourney fun to end when I went up against JP since he is honestly the best player I consider out of everyone I played in that tourney, but managed to squeeze a 2-0 from that match. If it was a 3/5 match though, I feel like I would have lost after that second win.

Most of my matches were off-stream, but I'll upload them in the morning/right now. Thankfully Clawmaster and Glitch Hooves's match against me are on the twitch VOD so I'll link to them instead

vs Myself147
I'm uploading this video last because I don't want to wait really long to upload a video. Maybe in the morning.

vs Royal:

vs Narrowz1:
I actually forgot to record this match so uh... Also I didn't turn replays on Beta so it's lost forever :(
shoutouts to narrowz1 though, her Fukua surprised the hell out of me.

vs JandreParis:

vs Clawmaster:
https://www.twitch.tv/n0837/v/89948050?t=02h02m20s

No analysis yet, I'm tired af. also yo I finally beat that gatekeeping-ass clawmaster

vs Glitch Hooves:
https://www.twitch.tv/n0837/v/89948050?t=02h14m19s

yo the rollback got super wonky during this match, but I'm not gonna blame my loss on that. My throw tech game sucks and I need to stop jumping against these type of players.

how do i block grabs though?

General thoughts of the weekend:
- I have to play a more zoning-oriented Robo considering the changes happening to her. HawtSalsa recommended me to play LocknLoad H and Updo for point robo and switch to Copter for point Fillia, so I think I'm going back to my old team config and get my shit together.

- I'm working on more Fillia combos, but I think trying to remember them has caused me to not reset as much, since it's so natural for me to stop doing my regular bnb and go for a crossunder/crossup/throw/overheadlol. The midterm week kind of killed my muscle memory for those combos, but I'll get it down soon.

- I need to recognize that I'm ass sometimes and there are people who are just going to be way better than me at this game. Certain matchups are hard for me due to character unfamiliarity, I'm not good at adapting, and I crack/get nervous easily. I want to be the fucking best at this game, but I've been playing for roughly less than a year(or a year idk) while the people who beat me have been playing for way longer. I have a long way to go as a player.

- I will kick their ass anyway.

- I should probably pick up some other characters I get annoyed/don't know shit about. Probably going to touch Eliza and Painwheel first, they seem like characters I'll like.

- i swear to god my finger slipped to mk to lk and I got fullscreen air gregor. please guys I'm not that bad

Edit: oh fuck its 3am well shit, you'll get your videos in the afternoon kids

It's been almost a month since my last post, oh boy

I've been dealing with college and stuff lately, but thankfully I've been able to play on weekends and work on my game that way. Having to come to terms with your skill level really help alleviate the pressure to win and makes me focus more on gaining experience as a player.

I don't have much to write about aside from trying to work on my Robo zoning with H LnL, this shit is so tight until I fight a Valentine that just dodges all of it by airdashing above me. At that point, I play Filia point and use H Beam assist as a way to get in. I like to think my neutral is ok for now, but the moment I'm in a situation where both me and my opponent are at 1 character and 1 hit can lead to a win, I'm the one who loses because the only thing running through my mind is how I can fish a hit. Need to make a conscious effort not to throw buttons out as much as I should.

Aside from that, I've also been playing in Ron's tournaments just so I'm used to playing good competition. This week I fought @Pickles and thought I did pretty ok. I feel like I could have done a lot better if I didn't decide to do that robo combo I'm currently learning and using my normal BnB. Also I should have zoned pickles out WAAAAY more, but I was really hyped, was yelling "I'M FUCKING OD" at the top of my lungs, and I guess that causes me to play rushdown robo idk

(I still think I'm od tho)

Also I played clawmaster in a FT10 that week too. Went from 1-6 at one point to a 10-7 in my favor, it was a good match. https://www.twitch.tv/clawmaster4/v/94620046?t=01h43m07s

last year i really only had time to play on the weekends. this year i try to make some time for it, even though im taking even more rigorous courses in high school. just do what works for you to give yourself time.

when you're in a situation where anything will kill, there's many things to consider. first, look who has the life lead. the one with the most life should have "leader" above them. as long as you're the leader, you can just stay back and avoid the opponent. if it's the other way around, try hitting them with projectiles if it's only a minuscule difference. if it's a decent chunk, you're gonna have to know the matchup and see what you can do. perhaps jumping forward a lot and going for a low. try to be ambiguous on your approach, regardless of the character you're playing.

don't do rushdown robo, she got the chip buff for a reason: to be an adequate zoner. wait for them to approach you. you have the tools necessary. s.HP, a sweep you can combo off of, etc. And make use of the L and M beams. they are quick and do good chip. do this less against big band, since it's easy for him to e-brake, and H Train brake travels fast and has 3 hits of armor. try to mix him up with both H and L or M. you'll keep him guessing on parrying, e-braking, etc.

i watched the set cause i wanted to see what i did wrong too, even though it was 3-0 it really should have been much closer but I think your note about losing in last-character scramble situations seems to be true, the only real solution to that I think is just playing so you get over nerves etc.

regarding rushdown robo, i dont really know what to say exactly. On the one hand like rabble said, robo has definitely been retooled to focus on zoning and going pure rushdown is (objectively?) less effective. On the other hand, vs me at least your robo by FAR did most of the work. It's hard to say though if you wouldn't have done better if you had tried to zone even though rushing down as robo went well for you (or i should say, rushing down instead of zoning as robo isn't the reason you lost).

the main points I noticed:

1) i dont really know how to word this so I guess i'll say "work on intelligent counteragression"? basically you had a tendency when nervous to play SUPER passively when i was doing basically anything at all which ended up even if it didn't get you immediately hit gave me pressure for free that you definitely could have been contesting. I guess another way to put this would be "active defense", look for opportunities to poke out, jump out, antiair, etc. Of course these things when timed improperly will get you killed but I would advise just trying to do it in casual matches, it'll make you lose more at first but eventually you'll start recognizing when it works and be able to get yourself out of a lot more situations.

2) ok this is actually kinda 2 things but they're both filia related so i'm grouping them together. DHC TO GREGOR, the gregor dhc is literally the ONLY reason to run filia 2nd, and while imo robo isn't necessarily the best character to set up gregor dhcs off random shots, you had multiple opportunities to get a combo off of dhc that you didn't take. When you got that dynamo then dhced into fenrir->magnet instead of gregor...aaaaaaaaaaaaa. second filia thing, is work on your resets. (this kinda relates to bella too but your bella didn't get much chance to play that set). the couple that you did were really slow and easy to see coming, and sometimes you didn't reset when you should have. game 2 when i whiffed my l bomber u should have won right there but instead of going for ch into quick reset you did a full combo, let me tech out of the corner, and then got hit again and lost. Making sure when you hit your opponent they dont get to play anymore is your reward for putting up with filia neutral so you need to take advantage of it. Of course this is the case with all characters but again bella didn't really do anything and robo's reset game is a lot weaker than it used to be (and again your robo is the character that did by far most of the work).

like i mentioned your alpha counters were really good, i mentioned this to you after the set but usually with bella AC into uss instead of dynamo is a better option (gets you a full combo too), and if you went into real filia vortex stuff after all those AC into updo->gregors i would have lost a lot more characters. again though, from your comments both you and rabble seem to think that the main contributor to your loss was suboptimal robo play and I dont agree with that at all.

wow you converted your AC so much I had a hard time believing it was you playing. You didn't do that when we played.

I was so sad that you decided to charge a head when Filia was fullscreen and in chip range.

Pickles makes a great point about active defense. Robo has cr.lp, L danger and s.hp + assist. I'm not totally sure, but I think there are enough frames after Filia's cr.lk to do Robo's cr.lp if pickles decides to do the classic cr.lk ->IAD high. It is very much a risk if the filia decides to go for another cr.lk, but that is definitely an opportunity. When first trying to counter aggress, you will definitely run into a ton of counter hits. It's well worth it if you want to get out of the corner.

The whole active defense thing is something I've been aware of ever since I fought against very offensive players, but never thought of doing counteraggression like throwing pokes out (I do try to AA when I have the chance, but idk in this match) because I usually wait and think about what to do next while blocking. Which is probably the reason why you got free pressure in the first place since I'm not focusing on what you're doing at all.

second filia thing, is work on your resets. (this kinda relates to bella too but your bella didn't get much chance to play that set). the couple that you did were really slow and easy to see coming, and sometimes you didn't reset when you should have.

Yeah, I really dropped the ball on game 2. I really thought I was going to kill then midway through realized my mistake. In terms of resets, I've been using the slow ones since they've worked on almost everyone else (I think the launcher -> j.lp j.lk -> crossunder is actually too slow so I want to find faster alts for that type of reset), but our match gave me a good idea of what type of mixups to go for as Filia. Also, I think I went to fenrir -> magnet for the hard knockdown, but yeah DHC gregor would have been a way better option for me.

wow you converted your AC so much I had a hard time believing it was you playing. You didn't do that when we played.

I think I was running point Filia w/ H Beam and Copter during our matches so I didn't have any option to AC lol.

oh hello there

It's been a while. School happened and I fell out of SG for a period, along with me learning how to play GG with its new PC port. Millia is a stupidly fun character and I learned a lot about okizeme there! Also what the fuck street fighter 5, I expected nothing out of you and you still managed to disappoi- ahem

Finally coming back to SG now and starting the year off with a SG local tournament (standings here: http://r3.challonge.com/pregameSG/standings). Only about 6 people there, all of them varying in skill. From low-intermediate guys to uh... Negus. Played lots of matches with him so here's stuff I think I can take from learning from those matches:

(notable match here is the actual tournament match; should add that I was the Xrd Millia color Filia for most of the stream since the stream didn't display names)

- I'm a professional spaghetti dropper, gotta work on execution again and remember characters have weird hurtboxes (bella stop)
- Does robo have a hard time dealing with characters with hornet bomber backing them up? Lots of strong pressure that I had to deal with, I wanna do that too.
- My blocking is okay, but I don't put a conscious effort into counterpoking strings with lights or throw teching. Incredibly focused on just trying to block a high/low/cross situation
- I've been so used to playing scared opponents online that actually playing someone who actually knows what to do scares the shit out of me.
- I love jamming my L1 button and calling assist at bad times.

I got 0-3'd, but I didn't do as bad I thought I would. I got 2nd in the end so I'm proud that my time spent in this game has led to this. Hopefully this tournament is the start of SG having some type of audience here in Central Cali, since there's nothing but SF/Smash here.

As for what I should do now, I think I want to review how I play Cerebella and Filia, I feel like I've been using the bare basics (especially with bella) for a good while of the game that I can PROBABLY handle doing slightly more execution-heavy and practical stuff. I like to think that my sense of neutral is good enough atm for me. I also like fix my repertoire of character knowledge. I want to learn Parasoul/Eliza and build some type of team around them.

I'm still having the same problems I've been having last week, heyyyyooooooo see me in a few months when there's noticeable progress ok thanks

Somewhat unrelated training stuff because I don't know if it applies to getting better:
Me and another FGC local have been trying to create a scene for SG and started it off by doing a round robin bracket in his tournament(along w/ KoF14, SFV, and UMvC3) at a small comic shop in Modesto, CA. The bracket went by a bit too slow than we liked it to be due to a ton of problems with how we made all 3 tourneys round robin, and kind of resulted in some guy having to leave because his mom had to pick him up. Also, I won $40??? Actually didn't know there was money involved here considering that the only thing I was told when I planned to help was that it was free-entry and winner gets a $10 PSN card. Glad that 30 actual smackaroos got added last minute. Planning on making it as a monthly thing since Saturdays are a good time for most people. We got 6 people to play SG, maybe 5 because 1 of them didn't actually know how to play the game, but still that's pretty good for Central Cali.

In terms of players, that kid(no clue if we're the same age tbh, there's a reason I wear glasses) who had to leave because his mom needed to pick him up was probably the most offensive filia/fukua/double I have ever met. I talked to him a bit and found out he came an hour or so away from NorCal just to play SG in a small ass comic shop, that's pretty tight. If he didn't leave, he honestly would have been able to take that $40 home with him.

Too bad I spent it on some mongolian grill place with friends after the tournament. Despite problems we had, I think we made a good local so I'll definitely try to help him out again for TOing.

Please wait for my next entry in the tournament organizer training thread thanks.

Bonus stuff:

hey it's me and i'm not mad or frustrated at all, welcome back to reading this calmly typed thread

Anyway, I've been getting back in the groove of playing SG again this month. I've signed up for SG at NCR as NWM isn't feasible for me due to my schedule(and PERSONA 5 SORRY GUYS I NEED THAT WEEKEND). I would just like to go to a regional that I can reasonably drive to. So I've been putting a ton of time into trying to improve my game and I got a set recorded that shows a lot of my current issues in my game:

Switched up from Robo/H Updo/H LockNLoad back to Fil/H Beam/Copter, definitely feels like a more me team(fast mobility, laser to back filia up w/ neutral). Making a lot of use out of H Beam + Filia setups and DHC Magnet -> hard knockdown.

Problems so far:
1. Not very good at recognizing repeat scenarios. Kept getting hit by L Shadow during my ground techs that I should have recognized from the first two attempts, but just didn't keep it in mind until "oh shit, what was th- oh fucking L Shadow". Keifer was also doing alot of upbacks that I could have taken more advantage of by doing more low/airgrab resets.

2. One mix-up will most likely put me on tilt and snowball me into making bad decisions. I still have lots of unfamiliarity with a majority of characters reset mixups. Identifying how to block said mixup is tough for me because my decisions are either downblock -> pushblock, counterpoke, or upback. Feel like I guess wrong more often than not, but maybe I should choose upback option more until I know what my opponent's options are.

3. When's my turn during the Parasoul matchup? I'm completely aware about Parasoul having a clear advantage with Filia because of her longer normals keeping Filia out, but blocking her Tear Shot pressure makes me think I don't really have a way to get out of it, especially with Fukua H Drill backing it up. Possibly super jump -> L airball? Will need to lab options on this considering I ran into this problem again when I fought Gelato in losers in last Friday's Canopian Brawl.

I know I should play to improve like always, but I really want to make it my goal to win games at NCR and make it as far as I can in the SG bracket. I want to iron out these issues before then.

Hey cool, I got third at NCR. That's tight, but I could have done way better if I actually practiced harder. Aside from my reservations about NCR's stance on any fighting game game that's not Capcom(KoF14 got treated pretty at least), I had a fun night meeting other SG players. Really wish the northern part of California had a more consistent(and respected!) venue to play SG, but me and a friend are at least starting up a locals.

I bought a mic a week ago so rather than making a big write up, I'll just analyze my play and upload it through youtube.

Quick points:
- Pleasure did sewer grab + a-train assist and that fucked with my head so much, weird setup that I think is only beaten by just upbacking preemptively?
- drop the be- combos. Feel like I got lucky getting third place considering that I got put into so many scramble situations
- I think my problem matchups so far are: BB, Eliza(I don't know where I can hit this lady or where I'm supposed to be), and Parasoul
