Disappointing to hear Tenoch got replaced. I won't mind too much if Hunoch and Xiboch are usable incarnations, but I doubt they are. It also seems that in the process of reivsing this stuff, the inspirations switched: Tenoch (and the Tenoctitlan inspired area) was based on Aztec/Mexica culture, wheras Kaanul and it's inhabitants (even the Cenotes) are explictly Maya themed, with one exception:
Lots of cool little things related to Mayan mythology here. Tzitzi is referencing Tzitzimitl, and the wonder twins are referencing Xbalanque and Hunahpu. Makes up for Tenoch getting axed.
Tzitzimitl are still Aztec, not Maya. I find it strange they'd keep an Aztec reference in given everything else is shifted over to being Mayan. This gives me some hope that the
Tenochtitlan based area might not have been entirely replaced by Kannul.
For those who aren't aware, Tenochtitlan was the de facto captial city of the Aztec empire. It was built on an island in the middle of a lake, and was expanded over time with a series of artificial islands with canals between them, and had an insanely complex series of causeways hydraulic systems, aqueducts, and dikes to move water around the city, the lake itself, and connecting to other towns and cities on the shorelines of the lake. So it was basically Venice, except it was way bigger: With 250,000 people, it was outright tied for the 5th largest city in the world at the time, as large as the biggest cities in europe.
It's an amazing setting that is unfortunately in like, zero videogames in a meaningful way period. I would be very, very saddened if we lost this, but with the Tzitzimitl characer being the only remaining vestiage of the Aztec influences, I can't imagine the Tenochtitlan area is still in.
Kannul is still very cool, i'm happy to see any sort of Mesoamerican representation, but it's still a shame.
