So this was finished a while back, and I'm just now getting around to updating it. I'm not 100% happy with it, and it is fairly low quality, but it is definitely more work than I thought it would be!

I do think it needs to be redone. Stuff has changed since it was made. That said, I'm not going to do it, and this will work just fine if no one picks up the torch.

Lastly, this is not a "beginner's guide to Skullgirls". It presupposes that you have some execution, and you have some knowledge of how the game works. It is simply a crash course to make jumping into playing Carol a little bit easier. Thanks all.

Before we lost the original forum, there was a PW guide that was absolutely helpful. It went through each basic and super move with a small summary about them. It had room for specific character MUs, and assist choices. It had a small bit about strategy, and so on.

I have waited for it to resurface, and it never has. It was pretty instrumental in helping me understand the character so I'm thinking it might be a hole that needs filled.

I think I'm a decent enough PW to do a lot of it (with criticism of course), but I fly solo, so I'd need someone to help with the assist part if anyone is interested in that.

Also, @Krackatoa if you don't mind, I'd love to copy/paste or link your combo thread in. It seems unnecessary for me to write a combo portion since yours is already so solid.

I'd just go over the normals and mechanics before getting into combos, or have really basic BnBs.

Optimal stuff's about to get weird in the upcoming weeks.

This sounds great - do it.

I've been thinking about doing something like this for a bit myself. This was the outline I had saved:

Hatred Guard - list of moves that can use it, and their angles (i.e., what you want to catch with them charged) and quick rundown of when their armor/active frames each start.

Flight - Changing the inertia of jump moves, limits of flight cancels.

Movement - Angles of approach for various flight moves

Guard/Pressure strings and common responses - basic j.LK/c.LK approach and lines, fuzzy guards

Crossups/Resets - left/rights from launch, left/rights from block strings, air throws

Assists Provided - c.MP lockdown/crossup options for double jumps, ADCs, and teleport/run/fleshsteps, st.MK, stingers, pinion dash, throw

Assists Preferred - Approach assists (Bomber, LnL), DP Assists, Lockdown options, general left/right options and pressure string obfuscation.

Undiscovered Country - PBGC options, team synergy,

Sure thing. If you need recordings or ideas for stuff, let me know.

I can lend my sexy narrator voice if need be.

I can actually look to see if I still have the original, by the way. I think a lot of it is irrelevant now though, is why I didn't re-post it. The part where I listed all the normals might still be of some use to you if you want to write up a more current one?

Yeah I'd love it. I'd gladly update it if you don't want to.

I'm not trying to stop anyone from writing a guide, but, whats the point? Everyone in the pw subforum knows how to use her, and anyone new to her can simply watch any good painwheel play for an hour or so and understand what the character is trying to do.

Simply put, the guides are already out there, in the form of numerous match videos.
Write the guide if you want :) but i dont think it will particularly be helping many people out unless you come with some new info all over the place.

If a guide WERE to be made, imho id like it to be a community guide. Meaning anyone that goes to these forums can give there knowledge, if its possible... Like if a part of the guide said:

St.lp:

Tomo:
Spencer:
Konkrete:

Etc etc etc

People dont have to write in their own opinions of things but could have a chance to write whatever they want and get credit for it in the process, while also being a guide by many people instead of one.

A wiki might be the best bet for this sort of thing. Anyways, just my opinion.

We need a tips and tricks thread as well.... Every other character has one.

Here is the old one, not sure it was updated, but this should be most of it.

I know nothing about PW, but I turned Tomo's guide into a google doc here. I figred that would be the easiest way of doing it before copying it into a new thread.

Haha it still says 2MP is a low >.<

Thanks Tomo and Vad, I'll see if I can't start updating it.

I started learning Painwheel in September and now I'm like high intermediate with her, so it's all pretty fresh in my mind.

With most fighting games I don't recommend starting with combos, but with Painwheel I didn't really understand her until I learned one. You really need to be able to capitalize on any hit with her.

Have beginners practice this until they can do it easily:
c.LK --> c.MK --> s.HP --> LK Buer --> cancel into Fly and hold forward --> j.LK --> (repeat from c.LK)

Then the real training can begin.

I'll see what I can do, though this semester has been rough as hell (OS Programming, Calculus, Linear Algebra, and Algorithms ... ). I've also been playing a lot less SG. I can't seem to find many matches at the hours I'm able to get on.

I'd like to see a guide written too, something we can read on the forum and somewhat organized like Zid's Cerebella guide.

If anyone wants to get on it now, they should certainly feel free.

I plan on picking it up as a summer project which is about a month away.

Hi guys! I'm fairly new to Skullheart, but I've been playing SG since day 1, mostly as Painwheel (absolute favorite character). :) I was hoping to contribute what little I could to this grand project. I'm reading over the doc now and I noticed that the whole thing is duplicated. Skip to the 14th page and you'll see that the whole guide starts over from the beginning again. Was this intended?

There are a lot of things that don't apply to Encore anymore, but you probably already know that.

Yeah, the guide is out of date. I'm glad you reminded me, I'll actually get to work on this pronto now that my schedule is more free (though god help me if work schedules me for another fucking morning shift...).

Any progress on the guide? Just checking in on it.

So I was looking to update Tomos. It still has a good foundation, just some of the information is outdated.

That said, I kept trying to update it and just couldn't do it.

So what I've started doing is recording videos. I'm kind of looking to do something like Mountlover's guide, but I'll break it up into videos instead of chapters.

What is your Youtube channel, Spencer? So that we can find these vids as soon as they are posted.

So I've made some solid headway into the guide.

Nothing is uploaded and I'm a few days out from that, but I had a few questions to get a consensus.

Also, my youtube channel is https://www.youtube.com/user/qspec2002

I am incredibly inactive (as in 0... I have 0 things), but I do hope to change that a tiny bit as there just isn't a lot of PW stuff nor is there enough Skullgirls stuff out there in general.

So the guide right now is:

Mobility

Normals

Specials

Supers

Before uploading I'd like to add:

A bit on combos (pretty basic stuff... I've no interest in throwing my hat into the Krackatoa/Caiolugon/etc. ring. I still their shit just like everyone else does). Namely it will just be combo that can scale as execution goes up. It will end at about 7.2 damage which is pretty respectible.

A corner combo (stolen from @CaioLugon with his permission)

A snapback combo

A bit on tech (also very basic) like simple crossups, crossunder, resets.

In the near future I'd like to add:

Assist talk (specific to PW)

1v1 match-ups with commentary (on this note, I need some players willing to go 1v1 with me. I don't mind getting bodied if you're much better than I am).

So my question is what would those interested in this guide like to see that isn't on the above lists?

optimal/universal (i think) snap:
cLK sMP cHP* xN
*fully charged

easier snap:
(cLK or sLP) sMP jMK jHK xN

easiest snap:
(cLK or sLP) sMP jLK jMK jHK xN

midscreen assist kill (i.e., happy birthday where the point dies before the assist):
kill > whatever into L-Nails > dash
sLP sMP jMP jHK xN

A few reset things could help. For snapbacks i use s.mp xN. For mid screen, i did a j.hk loop but i'll need some time to test how consistent it is. Also, you might wanna add a corner carry combo since her corner carry abilities are insane. I could provide an easy corner carry combo i use to use if you don't want to add krak's (his is harder).

Edit: the midscreen assist kill Hillary posted is the one i used. Lol

Actually, something Zidiane's guide does is he introduces different levels of combos and stuff. Easy stuff for beginners, harder stuff for intermediates, and then his own tech for experts. Zidiane's guide is probably one of best FG guides I've ever seen.

The Double Snap combo that I use is:
Snap>OTG with c.LK> c.MK> [s.HK> instant 9j.HP>s.LP>s.LK>s.HK] repeat.
IIRC it works on everyone, just need to change the s.LP timing a bit, and it's pretty easy to do.

My double snap is exactly yours Daemyx. I'll try some of the others and see what is easier.

Bubbaking, the combo I'll post will have one chain for beginner, an air chain for intermediate, and finish it up for advanced. It should scale with your execution ability.

A beginner guide for Painwheel is great! I see/read a lot of people scared of picking up PW but don't know where to start or think she is too advanced for them (same with Fortune).

I hope to see it evolve over time to just be a go to guide for Painwheel regardless of skill level. I'm sure other PW players would be willing to collaborate to help with moderate to advance Painwheel'ing if you don't feel comfortable.

I've got it recorded. I'm just doing editing now.

It is fairly brief (relative to both the Khaos and Mountlover guides). I think it will be around 45 minutes.

So far it is:

Mobility
Normals
Specials
Supers
Combo (bnb, corner, snapback)
Tech (by 'tech' I mean almost exclusively resets)

I think I'll upload it in full once I'm finished editing.

That said, I'm treating it as incomplete. I'm going to take a page from Khaos' guide and do a more gameplay oriented guide which will include more advice for her at neutral, offense, and defense.

As is, it is now, it is pretty minimalist attempting only to give an idea of what moves are useful and a handful of tools to start playing quickly.

What about push block tech or team synergy? (which assist help her and which assist helps her allies). Just thinking of other stuff that could be included. Of course, whether or not it should be added is up to you.

I'm not touching assists at all. I'm leaving that for a different video, or more preferably another person (@Hilary @Elda Taluda @Daemyx ) with a wider range of characters.

My tl;dr for PWs assist is essentially "get a defensive assist" and "understand you'll be meter starved".

As far as pushblock tech, what are you looking for?

What to do if you are getting pushblocked?

Or something like PBGC (actually I do need to add something about PBGC, especially air PBGC into Thresher).

More like anti push block stuff like zidiane's guide. The only one i know is j.mp into j.mk

I keep thinking that means peanut butter gamer channel. Also, can sometime explain PBGC to me? I don't think i ever fully understood it.

It's basically that after the pushblock animation finishes you go back to neutral, which means that, for at least one frame, you can do whatever you want.

People usually PBGC into invincible moves to beat pressure, because during that minimum of one frame that you're free to do stuff you can do something with invincible startup and beat the move that would keep the blockstring going.

OR you might push the oponnent away and be outside of the range of his next move, when that happens you can use a move with longer range and priority and beat whatever it was that he was doing (which is the idea with PBGC buer)

I can, but let me link a video which does an infinitely better job.

Hilary has been on a kick since like December to force PWs to realize the sex that is PBGC Thresher... and rightfully so. In my view it is her best PBGC.

Help on timing: input your move after the fan retracts mostly back but is still "shielding" her (I'll double check that when I get on tomorrow).

Easiest test: set Bella to Diamond Dynamo and try to pushblock into Deathcrawl. If you hit, you got it. If you don't hit... you didn't get it.
