Now I'm a keyboard player since basically forever, any game I've touched, I played it with a keyboard.
Now I love painwheel's playstyle can't get enough of that solo damage.
But the problem is her combos are so awkward to learn with a keyboard, or is it just in general it's just ridiculously hard to learn her? I mean damn, the timing for her combos is driving me nuts. No matter how many times I try it's like a 1/20 chance I get the timing right for a painwheel combo, flight cancelling is no problem for me, but timing her combos is the really hard part.
So is painwheel played with a keyboard even a good idea?

It's possible, but I'd say very hard. There are so many flight cancels in a basic BnB that if you ask me (I'm a controller player), it seems impossible.
But if you're like, a keyboard main/keyboard sensei, then maybe you can try it.
I'd just learn her inputs, look up some BnBs on YouTube or look in the Painwheel Gameplay Section before deciding whether or not I could do it.
Just my two cents!

I can do her BnB just fine with a keyboard.
Unless you're messing up the quarter circles the problem is not the keyboard.
Yeah, I'm having problems with the quarter circles. Got any tips on how to do it better/easier or anything?

if you can do the flight cancels, but screw up the timing, then I would say your problem is not the keyboard.

Is there anything specific you're having trouble with? For example, lk.buer xx fly, 6j.lk ? what gives you the most trouble

It can be a little rough as a keyboard player, but it is do-able. Keep practicing and you should be able to get the hang of it.

The biggest problem I am having is a good example would be this video
See the beggining?
I can do it all perfect until the fly j.lk
Then, I can't LAND that C.mk even if my life depended on it. I tried like ~30 times and only landed it twice.

so you can do cr.lk, cr.mk, st.hp xx fly 3j.lk but then miss the link into cr.mk? Just gotta practice the timing, you'll get it eventually. It makes for a shorter combo, but you could also just do cr.lk first, since it's an easier link. Once you get the feel for that, try to omit the cr.lk and go straight into cr.mk

Alright, I'll go try and improve on that, and try out your suggestion.
One more example:
Alright so I have this combo almost completely memorised until 0:08 where the j.mk comes in. I can land that but the follow up of that f.HK is impossible for me to connect. Any tips for that?

practice :P you'll get it, you're just having trouble with the links, I don't think its keyboard related at all or any "tricks" to really help with that

You have to make sure that you hit down+back otherwise you'll just do down back instead of qcb. So keep pressing down a bit longer and don't release it until you've pressed back.

Alright, now what about when I'm doing the Buer reaper? Is there any specific timing so I could get the perfect flight cancel and not screw it up?

@ElkyDori plays Painwheel on a hitbox, which is essentially just a glorified keyboard. It's very possible, and after you get used to it, actually easier, since your inputs are more exact than they could be on an arcade stick. You have to remember to input the direction in addition to the buttons being pressed as well to do a majority of her flight cancel combos. Like, lk Buer (fly aka 214) AND forward lk. So on number pad the input of directions would look like 214(fly)6 jlk. If you wanted to combo jlp instead it would be 214(fly)3 jlp

Alright, now what about when I'm doing the Buer reaper? Is there any specific timing so I could get the perfect flight cancel and not screw it up?
You want to input the 214 on, if not a tiny bit before the second hit of lk buer, where she stabs her knee into the opponent

Magicman, one of the best painwheels out there, plays on keyboard. After playing him and other keyboard users i dont think its a handicap at all.

Just, grind and practice. Grinding and practicing things over and over again are things that every fighting game player has to learn to accept if they want to have good execution.

Funny thing...

My hitbox has been having a lot of problems lately, particularly staying connected while on PC. So, because of @WarpedEcho tagging me here, I decided to try keyboard. I've been fooling with it for about 15 minutes, and so far I'm doing pretty well without building new muscle memory. Of course, I'm using a button configuration that emulates the hitbox layout. It's as follows:
Up=Space, Left=S, Down=D, Right=F, LP=U, MP=I, HP=O, LK=J, MK=K, HK=L, Start=6, Select=5, No macros.

Skarmand plays her just fine on hitbox, as does Elky.

Cloudking and I play her on various pads just fine, and I wanna say Warped does too.

Noah, Taluda, and most other painwheels use stick.

If you're looking to play on keyboard long-term all that really matters is your comfort with it, and possibly N-Key rollover. If you're really super serious about the game, I'd recommend making the switch to hitbox as a matter of sustainability/compatibility at offline events, but that's about it.
