Japan's views on the characters populairty (NOT GAMEPLAY)

This topic was created after it came up on the Beowulf story thread so I decided to create a thread where we could talk about it.

The poll results on the popularity of the characters is:

Marie > Peacock > Valentine > Ms. Fortune > Painwheel > Filia > Double > Parasoul > Cerebella.

Also here are the nicknames of the characters:

What I've got so far other then [insert name]-chan is:

豚ちゃん (Pig-chan) = Filia
河豚ちゃん (Blowfish-chan) = Fukua
エプロンちゃん (Apron-chan) = Leduc
サックスでか (Detective Sax) = Big Band
ダボォ (Dabo~o) = Double

I'm rather curious why Painwheel is in that place, maybe because she's got a sad backstory and before being transformed she was very cute looking.

I don't want to be stereotypical but...I think it has to do with Filia being chubby. Compared to the loli maid and loli kawaii toon it's kinda obvious why Japan doesn't like Filia. Also they are not a fan of Filias amnesia and Cerebella's show-boating personality.

I'm curious about what they think of D.Violet, B.Dahlia and Mrs Victoria.

-D.Violet had a lewd discussion on the Steam community after Beowulf's story released - the second most popular topic before Apron-chan gender-confusion.
-B. Dahlia was estimated to be a western favorite and they know that she is needed for the 'canon' story. One of the reasons why some people were suprised/curious when Eliza/Beowulf beat her.
-I saw one post call Mrs. Victoria 'that unpopular teacher', but I think that was because it was used in the context of the Indiegogo votes (where she lost out).

Also 'Japan dislikes' 'Japan hates' is a bit harsh (even though I know you guys are totally joking and it's just a general way of saying 'less popular'). Makes me wonder if there are people in Japan going "America hates Double!" "Westerners dislike Painwheel and Filia! They scored the lowest on the popularity poll!"

Agreed. The problem with "survey says," "researchers say," "according to polls" is that it's assumed that there are no factors that lead to bias results.
How large was the sample size?
How was the survey distributed?
Were the sample subjects actually players of SG or were they simply given pictures to look at and voted based on appearances?
What regions of Japan did a majority of the votes come from?
How were the questions formatted?


....sorry I took a class in research methods and had to conduct my own survey. Professor wouldn't let us field our surveys until he was satisfied with the format.

I think someone brought up a link in the other thread that showed people comparing Filia's weight to other female stars in fighting games. And Filia was heavier by double digits.

...Of course the comparison is completely fucking pointless, seeing as how not a single other character they used had some sort of large monster seemingly made of meat and bones attached to them.

I always hated the trend of calling Filia fat or overweight. It's less of a joke and more of an example of people jumping on a slightly chubby character and calling her a "pig", "cow", or "whale". I mean, sheesh, how many girls have gone through that in the past week? Scratch that, day?

Well there IS a thing between Japanese and immigrants, which for a certain period used to be mostly Brazillian who were used only for manual work, completely cut from the rest of Japanese life (that's why you can't almost never see them in anime except Excel Saga I think) and then sent back to Brazil when their job was over.

And it's been some time since I have documented myself, so this "period" might or might not be over actually.


It could be completely unrelated to that though and be because the Hurting has more personality than Bella according to some, but there are some character-less character liked by the Japanese fanbase (hope this term is better) in other media. Still irrelevant, but now I'm just shooting guesses.
