Filia Cerebella
Hey there! Like it says in the title, I just started out in skullgirls last night. I am primarily a Smash Bros. Melee player, but I've played around with Blazblue and Street Fighter a bit (not much outside of learning the hadouken/shoyruken inputs and a few basic strings). After dabbling around with getting $15 in my steam wallet for a few weeks, I finally picked up the game. Happy I could pick up the Big Band DLC and get into the "endless beta" for no extra cost. I plan on getting squigly whenever I can.

Now onto the main reason I'm making this thread; You guys are awesome. After going through the tutorial and playing through the story mode and the arcade with Solo Filia, I decided to try my luck online. I tried the "Quick Match" option for a few games with varying results (also known as 0/3), then took a look at the Lobby Mode option. A few lobbies came up, but one of them had the title of "Now Streaming" or something similar to that. I joined the lobby, then searched the host's name on Twitch. Sure enough, Dakillsage was streaming at the time. After waiting around in the lobby and playing a match with someone, I get paired up with the streamer/host. I probably got a few hits in randomly, but the resets were real and I didn't last very long. I got destroyed.

I pop into the stream chat and say hello, and say that I started yesterday and all that. What I didn't expect was the encouragement from both the chat and the streamer himself. Everyone gave me a few tips including when to block, info about resets, etc. and they told me to come here. On top of that, I asked about any other characters I could pick up, and was promptly suggested Cerebella by around 4 people. Dakillsage posted in the chat a good set of assists for each and talked about it on stream, so I decided to try it out. Queue reading on Skullheart about Cerebella combos/inputs and a few hours of training mode, and I'm back into the lobbies.

Dakillsage did not appear to be streaming at the time, but I saw another "Now Streaming" lobby that was hosted by Elky Dori. I repeat the process that happened last time, and I get paired with him. Just like before, destruction ensued. I hop in the chat and say the same thing as before, and Elky apologized for beating me (I didn't mind at all). I stay in the lobby for a little while as I almost beat one of the other people I played against. A few more matches, then I get paired up with him again. This game went quite a bit better, with me actively blocking at least 40% of the attacks and actually landing bella's level one blockbuster throw (the one with the sword). Encouragement continued in the chat, and I was pretty satisfied.

In less than 24 hours, I managed to go from struggling through some of the tutorial to getting some hits in, making players have to work to get their combos in, and even taking a few games myself. All of this is thanks to you guys.

I hope to keep playing with you guys and to keep learning for years to come. :)

Sorry this got so long, didn't expect to type up this much.

Always glad to hear that someone new is learning! We've all been there, and honestly the encouragement of the SG community and some others helping me out is what's pushed me to keep playing rather than just giving up. Skullgirls is super-kind on the learning curve, so it's pretty easy to hop in and learn what to do.

Try and work on your own comboes if you haven't already. Learn their strengths and their weaknesses, what you can do with them, etc. Combo videos are nice, while really confusing to me anyway can really help you learn a character's strongpoints. That's how I totally didn't steal the Icky reset what no I didn't do that.

The road of a thousand miles starts with one step.

tl;dr Learn stuff and you're good.

Aye, we are all here to help each other out mate. I hope you stick with Skull Girls and that you have a great time playing this games as do many others.

SG does have pretty much the nicest community of any fighting game I've played, yeah. (GG would be second.)

Thanks, everyone!

You were in the BB scene too, right? How's that community? I'm strongly considering BB and SG as my two main FG games.

And not to kiss ass, but you guys are a hell of a good company. It isn't always productive, and it doesn't always stick, but you guys have let us try out a hell of a lot of different things. It probably cost you some gray hairs, but thanks.

Well, you can be proud of having the most honest and accessible development team in any fighting game.

We're a small community and we're all trying to stick together to help this game along and bring in new players.

To be fair almost every other fighting game developer is either Japanese and/or a big company.

Also Skullgirls is pretty much the only indie fighter that's somewhat well known, Divekick doesn't really count.

I mean yeah there's a sea of doujin fighters but they're either only relevant in Japan or have a very tiny following on IRC channels.

You're completely right, but speaking from experience as a huge fan of indie games (though admittedly not any fighters)... not all of them listen. Not by a long shot.

Welcome to Skullgirls Mithost, I hope you enjoy your ride! o/

This reminds me of my play last night.

I was playing Quick Match and i played a guy where, after I hit him and landed a couple of resets, he gave up. I waited around a little bit and then finished him. I got matched up with him again like 3 more times and he didnt even play any of those times.
So I added him and messaged him told him to not give up.. that he could win, told him to look up tutorials etc.
And he said "Wow i thought you were adding me to talk shit"

So i dunno, i guess people are just used to games like LoL/CoD which have really mean communities. :/

Of course peanuts, otherwise how could he take prints and post them on the salt thread. xP

Wow guy worked hard for some quality shit talking and you were nice instead.

Way to disappoint the poor soul.

(Opening post)

Reading this actually makes me want to go online again

Thanks everyone, just got back from a busy couple of days.

I wasn't too ingrained in the Blazblue community (Smash bros is where I call home) but I think Chrono Phantasma has caused some balance issues that are starting to make the community a bit bitter. Like you guys said, most fighting games have a company that is separated from communicating with it's fanbase, and very few communities have been able to work past that (here's looking at you, Smash Bros :))

I look forward to it.

I always love seeing these kinds of posts.

Too many other Fighting Game Communities' members ruin the experience for newcomers, and it is really upsetting. Between Street Fighter 4, UMvC3, and even Persona 4 Arena to a lesser degree (which, as a whole, is a rather nice community), I have had my fair share of idiots who made me feel awful after playing them online.

With Skullgirls, I don't remember ever receiving any rage messages (but maybe that just means I'm not good enough :P). The Skullgirls community is wonderful and supportive, and I hope that we can all make this game fun for you as you continue to play.

Meanwhile, Isavulpes tells a newbie he would permaban him if he was a moderator, cuz the newbie created a "can you win without combos" thread...

Think of him as the angry uncle that you put in the other room in front of the television while the rest of the family enjoys a Thanksgiving dinner.

Actually, the reason was that he wrote "I have pirated this game and am not going to buy it, but I'm sure one of you got a spare key, so give me one"

But carry on, your post is so bad and wrong that it fits right into this forum

Wooow, I guess that was deleted super quickly, didn't think I arrived late on the thread :/
Sorry!

Can't you just play the foil Isa? Every forum needs a bad guy.
