I think it would be both fun and helpful (to new players) to create a cohesive list of Skullgirls competitive players. I'll start with the EVO players, and move down from there. Basically, the idea is to list everyone that's been noteworthy on the competitive side. I'd like to be able to point to a list of players to watch for people just getting into the community.

If you know of a player not currently listed that you think should be listed, just say so below.

HERE is a very helpful tweet @render made a while back that tells of the EVO top 32 for the last three years.

This seems like it's gonna make people upset. Someone's gonna just barely miss the cutoff between noteworthy and not noteworthy and that guy is gonna be like "what the HECK this list is DUMB".

Maybe. I'm going almost entirely on results from majors, so I think it's pretty fair.

If you're going based on majors you may wanna remove Skyking. I mean you have him under inactive players but still.

RIP Europe that has no tourney then.
Except if we count EU skullbats top 8?

I was unsure about any placements he might've had. If he had none at all, than I suppose I'll delist him.
"Competitive Play" is Major Tournaments and nothing else? Call it "Tournament Entrants" or what have you, then?

I'll add another bullet for non-major tourney placements.

how many majors do you have to attend to apply for this list.
Its not about how many you attend, it's about how many you place at. I'd count top 16 at EVO, top 8 at another major, or top 4 at anything else as noteworthy. If you've got some of those achievements, then you're likely of the caliber needed be listed here as examples of high level play to new players. Even if it's something like consistently placing in the top 3 of Skullbats, it's worth at least mentioning.

Kinda with Peanuts here.

@Dreamepitaph placed at (I think) Top 8 at NEC, as well as @drewski

I kinda fail to see how this is going to encourage/help newcomers at all. Most of the players that played at EVO haven't played in awhile, so I don't really see how they can give that much advice on a game that has changed so drastically since last EVO.

There are obviously exceptions, but I don't really see this post being as helpful as you think besides providing dick bragging rights.

I saw a guy post for weeks on /r/Skullgirls about how he was training in Skullgirls so that he could hopefully compete in a real tournament. I congratulated him on a recent video where he overcame an opponent he'd previously been beat by, and I joked, "hey, you'll be able to take on dekillsage any day now."

He said, "who?"

That's why I'm making this list. It's not for the benefit of the people listed on it, it's for those who don't yet know who their top players are, the players they should be watching. Furthermore, I cant help if people want to argue over the threshold for inclusion, or their interpretation of why this list exists. It's not for people to feel good about themselves for placing at one or two small tournaments.

Nothing wrong with writing down history.

idk I mean I know the SRK rankings are kind of a joke but they seem like they'd work for what you're trying to do. They even implement a system where points from tournaments decay over time so e.g. Chilldog no longer gets a hojillion points for placing top 3 in back to back Evos.

Inchinyo still plays.

Kind of a poor "qualification" since majority of play and events is online for this scene.

I thought about this, but I honestly feel like they're too much of a joke to be usable. Fragmented, incomplete, etc. My goal here is twofold:

- provide a single list for players to look at that clearly shows top player names, reasons why you should care to watch them, and which characters they can mentor you from afar on
- feed new players into Skullheart by hosting that list here and showing that said top players frequent the forum

You know what? Here's something I think will be cool that could invite involvement from a lot of different people... and tell a coherent story about the SG Competitive Scene: a documentary like "A Year of Injustice!"

Watch this. A big part of this is posting tournament highlights with results, so you don't have to go through the process of ranking players since the results speak for themselves. It also features things like the discovery of infinites, F-Champ talking shit to the NRS Community prior to launch, pop-offs, etc... all to tell a coherent story of the life and times of Injustice.

We can include things like MikeZ yelling at all of us about how to beat HK Hornet Bomber assist, highlights from the Indiegogo campaign and EVO donation drives, and MikeZ himself physically chasing me out of an EVO Panel for asking if "Real Soviet Announcer" was going to be an actual thing!

Hence the question mark next to his name. I'll move him.

I think the list above, compiled mostly of tourney results, is actually a fairly good representation of the talent in Skullgirls. Is there some online-only top player that *would* be at this level but never attends live events? Please post them, I would definitely humor that.

Feel free to take the lead on that [emoji14]

I'm actually going to compile all of this into a fun little graph showing performance over time, but a full documentary is a lot of fucking work.

If its visibility and good play, add Magicman from Korea and Poccola from Japan and Caio from Brasil and Woofly and Peck in the UK

Really? I wasn't under the impression they were at *that* level. I'll take your word on it, if you really think so.

Sounds like I need to add an, "online warrior," section as an addendum.

Last time I played Luna the score was 20-18 when we stopped, so if I'm worth noting she would have to be too

Uzu bodies me

uzu was godlike for a while, i have no idea what's happened to him as of recent. luna is also pretty solid and she's competent with hella characters.

also if this is a list to show newcomers characters we can potentially help them with, then you're probably better of taking double off my part, since i dropped her a little while ago

[E] so I don't get banned for shitposting, I'll say that wingzero should probably be on this list since he won SCR and got top 8 at NEC

Of course this'll be a lot of work. My guess is that this will take a year to put this together at the very least... but you know what? Let me get back to you on this.

Fair enough. That's the kind of thing I was looking for.

Thank you, I'll list him.
I was 3rd place at nec and top8?! At winterbrawl.
I know you're on a really goofy kick lately and you're all about the lulz or whatever, but can we please exhibit a sense of realism? If I beat you roughly 40% of the time, do you think it's fair to say you're a top player? This isn't a rhetorical question, or an insult. If you feel like you should be up there, answer seriously.

He beat WingZero to get top 3 at NEC. That puts him in the upper echelon of players in my book.

And I beat Duck in a local Chicago tournament, once. Am I a top player? I sometimes beat NCV, too. Should I be on this list?

How about this, twerk: If some other top players advocate for your inclusion like McPeaunts did for Uzu or Luna, I'll add you. I'm fine with that.

I wouldn't count Apex. I would count ECT and GUTS 3 though.
ECT 3rd Place, GUTS 3 2nd Place
SonicFox won both those tournaments. Kenin got 2nd at ECT and Peanuts got 3rd at GUTS 3

If Winnie is inactive then so is Kenin. Neither have competed since Evo last year.

Thanks for the results rundown.

I listed Pat as active because I see tweets from him talking about his training for this upcoming tourney season. If winnie's doing the same, I'd want to list him as active, too. Is he?

Quick question: if the larger FGC has trouble defining a Major from a regional from a mid-major etc... how does the SG community define what's a Major and a non-major?

Honestly? Registration numbers for all games. I'm including both, so what we call them isn;t so important. The only thing I'm not accepting is local tourneys (like Chicago Heart, Maxout, and BARWARZ, for example).

wtf rikers is there
I'm actually probably gonna strike him from the list. I included him in the first draft because he got top 32 at EVO Last year. I think that's literally all, though, so... I dunno. Compared to the numerous wins by other players, I don't think that's enough.
