First of all, SHAME ON YOU if you don't know about Nidhogg. (Nah, I'm just kidding.)

Nidhogg did not have a release date since before SG was released, and now it does! Plus all of its features have been announced.

- Multiple stages
- 8-player tournament mode
- Stages with dynamic properties and even multiple platforms
- Online play

It releases on January 13, 2014 on Steam! OMG I can't breathe.

Get that dick, Skullheart. Go get it.

(And if you don't know THAT reference, view the spoiler vid. lol)

This sort of gives me a Divekick vibe, but with less dive kicking and more fancy platformer fencing. I am... intrigued. I'll keep an eye on this game when it comes out.

Finally! God damn I remember seeing teasers for this like 2 or 3 years ago.

FINALLY, the guy was apparently caught up in his intense uni work. So glad its being released, I have played it and it is pretty damn amazing. 500000x closer than Divekick to reducing what I see as fundamental fighter mechanics into an elegant minimalist package and it is sooo much fun.

Uh, shouldn't this be in the Gaming forum?

Indeed it should. Moved.

Nidhogg is out now. I'm still not sure if I'm going to buy it yet myself, but if I hear enough good things about it, I'll definitely consider it.

Edit: It appears circumstances have changed. I'm totally getting the game :D

I just finished playing the game with my brother, and I recommend the heck out of it! It was the level of mind-game filled 8-bit fencing craziness that I was hoping for, and just all-around just fun to play!

It's only $11.99, and it is so worth it.

This game is super godlike. Bonus for me because I've been a fan of Daedelus' music for a long time. Nidhogg is also a great game to hone your fundamentals for more traditional fighters. Spacing and mixups are pretty important.

P.S.: Everyone should play me right now.

I can't get it to recognize my controller, which Skullgirls seems to have no problem detecting. Fucking lame.

EDIT: I went ahead and ran joytokey, but I mean, come the fuck on, seriously?

It was fun, but this whole controller thing has got me down :(

Seems like a lot of fun, but the price is higher than what I'm willing to pay for it. Same can be said for Samurai Gunn.

I'll probably wait for 66-75% off Steam sale or a Humble Bundle.

Yeah, TBH any game more than about $5 is a no-go for me, but this does look really cool.

I didn't try long but couldn't get it to recognise my stick either. That said, the game is still in development. It is 4 directions + 2 buttons, it probably plays better on a pad.

Nidhogg on stick would be cool though.

Game is even better than the old in development build was, can't get the online to work satisfactorily at the moment. Taking it to a fighting game meetup on Saturday.

A friend of mine just got this game for himself and I. Needless to say, it's hella fun though I've only done single player so far.

Also, the OST is in the game's folder? Amazing.

Recognized my qanba Q4 instantly. Are you guys using a ps3 stick or a 360 one?
Stick is nice, I think it was designed to be played on a stick with 2 buttons. Rolling is easier if you have a square gate, although moving your sabre up/down might be a little slower than with buttons.

My Qanba Q4 was unrecognized. Did you have it on the PS3/PC setting or 360?

360. Qanba lies, 360 is the best option for pc pretty much 100% of the time.
Also turn mode on since it doesn't accept d-pads according to the steam forums. I expect that to be patched soon, though.

Regardless, I tried 3 different controllers. A PS3 fight stick, a PS3 fight pad, and a standard dual stick Logitech USB controller. Keep in mind, ALL of these controllers work with Skullgirls, and none of them work with Nidhogg. This is just bad controller support on their part, plain and simple.

Tons of pc games only accept xbox 360 drivers. Like, tons. It was this weird thing that microsoft did a while back, they would give you a fancy certification sticker to put on your game if it supported 360 drivers, so a bunch of games that didn't care made it only work with 360 drivers and in the end it kind of made the 360 controller the official PC controller. Obviously you can still support ps3 drivers but it's usually considered kind of like an extra thing. It's not perfect, but at the same time it means that a lot of games have controller support that never would have bothered before and you can still use ps3 controllers and stuff for the pc it's just a bit of a pain.
I believe that people use a program called motioninjoy for ps3 controllers on pc, would probably be better than joytokey but I have no clue since I don't use either. You could certainly look into it.

I'm aware of the alternatives, I just think it's bullshit how this game has been getting carted around to various FGC events for 3 years, and it doesn't even have decent controller support.

That'll fucking teach me to buy games on hype alone :/

Well geez. The game is good, it just doesn't support your controllers... I mean I understand being a little angry, but it's not even really a nidhogg thing. There was a point when the amount of brands of controllers got ridiculous, there needed to be a standardized controller for pc, and microsoft stepped in and presented one. Honestly skullgirls is the only pc game I know of that supports ps3 controllers without motioninjoy. In fact, just for reference... "Brothers - A Tale of Two Sons" is so controller oriented that it actually doesn't even have keyboard/mouse support. It does not recognize my PS3 controller. I just tested it.

Doing joystick support well is a huge job. If you want to support every USB controller, you have to make an entire screen dedicated to allowing the user to map their joystick's buttons, axis, and hats to in-game actions. It's basically embedding joy-to-key inside your game. If this is too big of a job, supporting only xbox controllers has a lot of advantages.

Stop me if I'm wrong, but isn't one of the bullets on the Nidhogg steam page, "Full Controller support?" It's the sixth bullet down. Am I mistaken? Does full controller support actually mean, "just 360 controllers?"

I'm just saying that I bought this game based on the idea that the developer actually meant, "full controller support," and not just, "thanks for the $12, sucker."

Full controller support means that you can operate the entire game with a controller. It does not specify what controller you are using. To say that your game accepts literally every controller that can be plugged into a computer is to lie, since there's always some guy who will be wondering why your game doesn't accept 20 year old drivers.
Edit: Here you go, straight from valve during the big picture release sale:

Possibly. Full controller support normally means menus as well instead of just in game.

Or what Horseman said.

The game is still in development, complain directly to Messhof if you want more controllers supported. I'm pretty sure the guy works solo, by the way if that helps explain anything. On the site it only has him and a producer mentioned.
