Platinum Games

I'm not saying the other characters wouldn't work with the Platinum touch, fuck yes I wanna see Serpico combos.

but with Guts, he will always use the Dragonslayer (or a large sword in general). I mean, the main reason why the Platinum touch works in a lot of games is because you can mow through mooks while learning and getting timing on the mechanics of the game. with Guts, if they wanted it to stick to feeling like YOU are playing Guts, you'd have no chance to test out combos as you'll be busy tearing everything apart in one hit. yes, I know boss fights like Zodd and Mozgus could have chances to use combos, but there's not really any other place for him to do it.

hell, even Mozgus' minions with demonic powers were torn to shreds easily.

Tbh you could still make a platinum out of it. With more enemies and a greater focus on platforming or more dark souls-esque combat that's more about positioning than actual dps since giant guts weapons kill most things in one hit. It could work.

Sounds far more like Team Ninja than Platinum.

True...but...uh...I got nothing XD didn't much too far ahead about it.

Platinum certainly has the know how and experience to pull it off, it just doesn't have the same knowingly zany flash that usually characterizes their work. More of an aesthetic issue then anything else IMO.

berserk doesn't work with platinum because Guts doesn't parry shit for shit so he is intrinsically incompatible with any gameplay system they could ever make

Guts doesn't parry shit for shit
I swear he used to in the early stuff.

Then he just got hyper armor on everything.

Indeed he used to parry and dodge a lot until Berserk armor. Then, BERSERK ARMOR.

But that's not much different than Raiden in Berserk mode.

I say it could be done.

Nier spoilers are full on out in the wild now, been seeing lots of people discussing ending stuff I've thankfully managed to avoid.

Download will be done in a minute too, so I can just play it and ignore the internet until I'm done.

It's a Yoko Taro game, that means at least 4 endings and then a new ending in a book you'll never read and either the joke ending or the book ending turns out to be the canon one.

I got a prompt implying there are Dark Souls style messages, what?

So, I have something to say about the game that is positive but it probably doesn't sound like it. I know @Jutsei was hoping for it though.

It's actually really easy to just completely forget this game was made by Platinum. Don't get me wrong, the gameplay is really fun and definitely good, though it's definitely no Bayonetta or Wonderful 101. But the game is an RPG first, it's Nier first, just with the added benefit of having competent talented people making the game and delivering good gameplay.

I'm really enjoying it so far, interested to see where the plot is going and interested to see what the rest of you will think when it comes out in the west.

Okay, so not posting spoilers, but a heads up. I made it to ending A and I have to say, nothing fucking happened between game start and ending A and there are about 100 loose ends. I have to wonder if they did this because so many people played Nier and got ending A and just stopped, not knowing they were missing out on practically the whole game, and at the end of the credits on this game there is literally a message signed Square Enix PR that says "There is way more story and even gameplay systems you have not seen, please keep playing, this is not the end of the game".

So just know the end kind of shows up long before you expect it to and resolves only a few threads, because it's not the actual end.

Also for those of you who don't have a 360/PS3 and no time to watch like a 40 hour LP or something but want to get into Nier, these videos are really good, I don't particularly care for the guy's presentation but he delivers all the info you need and shows you some of the best stuff in the first game.

(I know I'm the only one in here posting but I've been trying to make them have information worth noting for those interested in the game, anyone wants me to shut up feel free to say so)

Any notice of if the demo is coming out on PC?

Any notice of if the demo is coming out on PC?
None thus far, sadly. Though honestly it's a bad demo in that it gives you the barest of bones in terms of what the game plays like, especially since it's in a super linear area with only two weapons and no abilities. Still, if they bother to put it out for one system they should for the other, especially when it'd be useful to see if you can run the game or not.

How is the pacing?
Uh, honestly pretty strange, even by Taro standards.

I mentioned in a prior post you reach the game's "end" far faster than you would think. You can space this out by doing side quests, which you should since you get more out of the characters and world that way, as well as hunting down materials to upgrade your weapons etc. but the main missions go by really fast and then all the sudden the game is "over". I'm currently on route C and don't know how to put this without very minor spoilers to the story's structure, so I'll spoiler them in case anyone wants a completely blind experience, know I'm not putting anything real in here.
Route A is the game we've pretty much seen in terms of previews, trailers etc. It plays like an open world RPG (think Nier or maybe Zelda even) but with solidly Platinum gameplay (that's easy as fuck on normal, fair warning) and a few shmup/twin stick shooter sections here or there.

Route B is Route A again but you play as 9S (2B's support character) and it has some major and minor differences, you're seeing things from a slightly different perspective, seeing some different major events when the characters were split up, a lot more shmup sections and combat is now largely focused on a twin stick shooter mini game instead of hack and slash (this is MOSTLY optional but honestly it makes things go by much faster since 9S isn't built for combat)

Route C opens with you switching periodically between 2B and 9S for a little bit and then you are given a choice for which character you want to play and you continue from there (this is where I have left off as of now)

Route D and E are complete mysteries to me as things stand. (I assume D is just C but if you pick 9S instead of who I picked, but that's me theorizing.)

Endings F-Z are all joke ends you can get at various points, most of which are only accessible after Route A, they're essentially glorified game overs. Remove your OS chip? Ending T. Abandon your mission as 9S in the prologue so 2B can't get to the first mission? Ending G. You get the idea.

Exactly, I'm more interested in how it runs on my PC than the actual content.

Comparing minimum required specs never really worked for me as much as just trying and running the thing.

Reached ending E, skipped most side quests and didn't do much side content in order to just have the game cleared so I could stop worrying about spoilers, plan to 100% it when I get my American copy. Game is great.

Minor menu function spoiler.
wow I can't believe that Nier: Automata lets you place your own enemies

really lets you set the challenge level to your liking!!
You were joking, but they kept the debug mode in. Chapter select too, so post game clean up is actually super easy now.

A quick word of warning I should mention since it comes out tomorrow, while you should sidequest as much as possible, don't bother exploring much during route A. There are lots of hidden paths and shit, but like 85% of them lead to chests or doors you can't access until Route B.

Also know you're never permanently locked out of anything.

Duly noted, thankyou for the word of warning

Also don't buy plug in chips unless you REALLY want whatever it is (like parry). You'll always find better versions in the wild, and especially do not EVER buy chips from a certain singing salesman because while he offers some rare upgrade materials at as decent a price as you can get them, his chips are bullshit because they take up an extreme amount of space.

Do you guys know how to return to the abandoned factory? I have a sidequest there but I can't figure out how to go back.

You remember the area you start in the city? The yorha box thing is named City Ruins: Centre for it.
Once there look for the broken bridge thing. Climb up and it should lead you to the factory. c:

Also, spoilers for the beginning of route B below so be warned:
HOLY SHIT IT PLAYED BACK THE EXACT WAY I DID THE SETTINGS
It honestly blew my mind and I was yelling "Holy shit" and "Oh my god" the entire time.

spoilers
There are like 4~5 easter eggs for that sequence too, I only remember idling for 5 minutes is one.

Has anyone gotten a glitch making 11B's memento undo able? I looked up video guides and made sure I accepted the quest but the objective just won't appear, not in location or on the map.

Did you start playing before the game finished downloading? I hear it causes things like that. From what I heard it requires a complete restart to fix. Which sucks.

I didn't do that quest until chapter select was available anyway, so I have no idea.

Yeah, I did exactly that, which blows. Will it reset on my second run?

Will it reset on my second run?
I'm sorry but I really have no idea. You need that one too, if you want to get all weapons (which is required for ultimate boss and ending Y).

So the thing fixed itself, thank god.
I'm doing the Photographs mission and I can't get to the desert one. There's a heavy sandstorm and no matter how hard I run I can't get closer.

I had this problem too and I accidentally found the solution.
There's this dune that travels diagonally and somehow bypasses the invisible wall in the sandstorm. It's weird.

If you ran straight at it from the entrance, keep running forward in the storm but angle right, there's a way through.

Glad your problem fixed itself.

This game has the dumbest fucking localization, holy shit. As a reminder I just played the Japanese version entirely in English, so this isn't the translation or even how it is in all copies, this is a problem with the western copies only.

So, most of the characters are named after philosophers, and usually there is a connection as to why. There is a character named Sartre and he has a pretty interesting connection to one of the bosses. That said his name in the American release is Jean-Paul, so it's the same reference (Jean-Paul Sartre) but now it's a fuck ton harder to pick up on. If that wasn't enough, there is a sidequest involving him, if you do this sidequest 9S will at one point say his name while talking about him. In the American version there is a loud censor BLEEP when he says the name since the VA said Sartre.

What the fuck? Why change it if the dialogue is recorded? Why change it to obscure the reference? Why any of this?

I haven't gotten far enough to see if they change Marx to Karl (the factory machine arms you fight in the prologue) or any of the other characters except Pascal, who is still Pascal (which changing would have been obnoxious since his name gets stated constantly)

Sounds like copyright decisions. Just like with JoJo name changes.

See. If there's a singer or artist named Sartre suing people

Need help, but fucking spoilers, on third route
Support A2 or 9S? What does this mean?
EDIT: Nevermind turns out it affects nothing in gameplay

You'd have to have some brass to be like, "Being and Nothingness? Bitch please, I wrote [insert generic pop sonog here]".

!!!EXISTENTIALISM!!!

Anyway, started this out yesterday. I was told V.Hard is a little nasty, so I started on hard. Switched to normal after getting one shotted by boss and having to replay the entire prologue lol.

Wondering if you guys prefer hard mode and think I should switch back. I definitely like the more aggressive enemy behavior, but I'm hoping it doesn't get too gotcha with the one hit kills like the prologue does.
