POKKEN

Any good Garchomp footage out? Having Bryan Fury's strings (f4~1, db2, b1) as well as a command run with followups is getting me really hype to see what people do with him.

All stage showcase with a sample of music from each one.

I'm unsure when I'm gonna get Pokken, originally I was gonna get it at launch because Shadow Mewtwo, but nah, I ain't preordering for a damn Boss Character.
Any words on how good it is yet?

yeah, along with Bloodborne, Legend of Zelda, and Splatoon.

It's been getting favorable reviews so far. GameSpot even gave it a 9/10

Yeah, but how many of those reviewers even play/know anything about fighting games? I feel like most positive fighting game reviews are "I don't really play fighting games at all, but this seems like it has a lot of depth" or "I love fighting games! I played tons of Street Fighter 2 on the SNES! This game is great!" (and most negative ones are "not enough single player content" or "everyone online is too good"). I dunno, when it comes to fighting games I'm always super wary of general reviews and I just try to find videos of tournament/online play instead =/

Speaking of tournament play, I'm really curious to know how this game is going to be played in tournaments/at EVO, since apparently couch co-op forces one player to use the WiiU gamepad and also locks the game's framerate down to 30fps >_> I guess they'll try and do some kind of LAN setup? But there's also a whole leveling up thing you can do, and it looked like you could choose different stats to focus on, and custom trainers... Maybe there will be a way to import that or something but I have yet to hear anything about any of that.

the correct answer is don't think about it too hard
life finds a way

Hahaha, that, or it doesn't and everything falls apart :PUN::PUJNA:

Anyone knows how this whole level up thing works? It really affects your status in battles? Can be turned on/off during matches (like, choosing to set everyone to a fixed level, for example)?

I thought that they said there was a way to play Pokken as LAN with two WiiUs.

holy shit there's even more hoops to jump through in order to make the LAN work

the "smoothest" option requires you to redo your internet configuration on every setup

no TO in the world is gonna put up with this nonsense

I'd agree with you on nearly any other game, but Pokken isn't really as deep as Street Fighter or Tekken, so it has some leeway with being reviewed by your every-critic.

Point is that when every-critic says they think it maybe looks deep, as far as their untrained eye can tell, that doesn't mean anything to us more diehard fighting game fans looking for a FGC perspective.

please
you're just mad you aren't in the game

So I'm just going to bring up the elephant in the room

Who ever reviewed this has never played a fighting game in their life.

I've had a chance to play the game. The fact that a lot of sites think the game is deeper than a game like tekken or that the mechanics are overwhelming is laughable. Not to say there isn't any depth to it, just the fact that someone is making that claim right out the gate is cringe worthy. EVERY input is a direction and 1 or 2 buttons, so its already way more simple than just about every fighter out there and basically the same thing as smash bros.

IGN has had bad reviews for 5+ years on a regular basis. The fact that people expected anything less is silly to me.

See also, where IGN complained that the singleplayer content for Skullgirls was too hard (the reviewer couldn't beat arcade even on Sleepwalk).

Has IGN never played a Arc Sys game?
They've never played a game before, period.

Cut them some slack, man.

The pain.

THE PAAAAAAAAAIN.
When you write for a newspaper or a blog you always have to think at the people you're talking with. Clearly, you are not part of IGN target audience.

I also guess that the IGN audience will probably benefit from this review. Maybe somebody will avoid buying it scared from the "Overwhelming Mechanism" and this is great. It is good to inform the consumer on possible issues they may have with a given product. I think that for most of the people out there videogames in general are overwhelming and playing Pokken could be too difficult.

My 2 cents.

Yeah, I'd buy that if they never reviewed a fighting game before, but they have. I'd buy that if the game didn't have a tutorial that hand holds you more than Toriel does for each mechanic, but they do. I'd buy it if the reviewer didn't mention "those with years of fighting game experience" having trouble with the system, but they did. No matter how you slice it, saying Pokken has Overwhelming Mechanics for a fighting game is pure garbage.

Got to play it a bit a few weeks ago. Pokken is fun, but its...really repetitive tbh. The characters all feel and play different, like in the way Smash chars feel and play different, but the small roster made up of pokemon I largely dont have any connection to really made it feel boring fast. The phase shifting was cool, but wore off fast.

ya pullin our chains, right?

Pokken on pc doesn't look so unbelievable. We're talking about a fighting game here and not about a handheld version and pokemon tcg online exists too.

But still it will never happen.

Its Nintendo. No you are not getting a PC port.

We're talking about a fighting game here
What does the genre have to with whether a game goes to PC or not
not about a handheld version
the other platforms a game is on has no bearing on what other platforms it can/will be available for
merely the developers and/or publishers
pokemon tcg online exists too
yes, by a random fan group and is not an official game in any capacity
the only thing that actually involved Pokemon is that it's the IP featured in this fan made game
EDIT: As an addendum, even if it was an official release, just because one game is on a platform of choice doesn't mean any others will/can/have to be on that platform as well

and even then, Nintendo isn't in control of the pokemon TCG, Gamefreak is.

Is this seriously still being discussed?
