Hey fellow forum people..... So I'm really interested to hear what problems you think society is facing in this current age.

RULES:

Lastly let's not make this a political banter thread so try to keep your political, religious, and economic opinions on the DL (please)

Now this is just something I'm doing cause I'm very interested and it has a lot to do with my real life work.
And yes this is a serious thread (this is going to blow up in my face -_-)
 
Lack of direction (myself included). A lot of people are not sure what they want to get out of life or don't know how to start.
Probably untrue, but if you look at a lot of television shows recently, they are about the breakdown of society (Walking Dead, Under the Dome, Falling Skies). I think this may partially reflect people's idea that they don't like how they/soceity are/is currently. So they imagine suddenly getting a blank slate and seeing if that would offer a more fulfilling life (even with the hardships), where it's no longer about what you did in the past, it's what you do now. Sure you can try to say that the same is true in real life, but debts/broken relationships/general bad history won't go away.

This is like a digital protest on twitter where people are telling stories of how they were treated by police. #CrimingWhileWhite is a hashtag were white people admit crimes they committed and basically nothing happened.
#AliveWhileBlack is where black people post encounters with police where they get stopped, detained or arrested for basically nothing.

#CrimingWhileWhite has a few articles out there, cnn and washington post to name a couple.

Yes very important topic. I really can't relate to any of this being a white middle class American male. But I understand why it's important
 
my main issue with society as an Hispanic is that the black/latino experience is no one hearing us in our true light. we're nice decent people but media chooses to go THAT route and nowadays we're treated as "like hats, all size fits one" and the truth is we're human beings first before ethnicity so at least treat us as such.

side issue: Fellow African Americans so far the most notorious group to berate each other, shoot each other and belittle each other for god knows how many years this started and some already hate your guts if you were born and raised on the other side of town while some hate you if you went from the ghetto to a decent place. its like they think we've outclassed when really the truth is. No one wants to deal coke, no one wants to shoot another person. everything they do is for money cause money is undoubtedly the thing that keeps you alive in this world.

last issue: Money.

I was told by the pharmacist at my pharmacy that only 5% of people ever work hard enough to ever be anything (like doctors, lawyers etc.)
He followed with the statement, "In life we are all slaves in one way or another. You either live, or slowly die."

So now I'm all hell bent on going to medical school to get into surgery.

I live in a border town, so there are a lot of Mexicans (they are actually from Mexico) that are on Medicaid and Medicare
getting high dollar drugs for dirt cheap. (Medicaid in particular pays 100% of the claim)
Among them is Abilify (which isn't technically necessary; it just treats schizophrenia and bipolar etc.)
for example that is around $1,000 for like a 8oz bottle.*
They get it for free baby. That's right every month babyyyyy.

Meanwhile we have people who worked until age 65 and are still paying an ass-load for medication that they NEED
or they'll eventually have a heart attack or a stroke.

In terms of customer service I have like 0 regard for patients anymore after working with them for so long.
Actually that's a lie, some of them are exceptional so I like them.

To sum up, the US healthcare system generally sucks.

*(Note: many manufacturers of pharmaceutical drugs charge out the ass on brand name meds to not only make their money back on the research, but to take total advantage of the monopoly they have on the product in question until the patent expires 18 years later. There's no real reason for the drugs to be quite as expensive as they are. We're talking about markups in the hundreds of percents. Consequently the pharmacy must mark it up to make like 3 bucks per prescription or so.)
 
Absolutely. In my opinion the mass medias current presentation of African Americans, Hispanics, and Muslims is the reason why there exists a stereotype and overall fear of these groups of people. To put this issue in perspective I have a Chinese freind that lived in China his whole life. When he came to America (this year) he visited a big city and when he came back he said "I was so scared" I asked him why to which he responded "cause there were so many black people". Of course I gave him a lecture on why this thinking was ignorant but he had never met a black person before and had based this thinking on what he saw in popular culture....

So yes I completely agree that the media is a large part of this demographic discrimination problem

When like, 90% of everyone thinks there's something wrong with them (again, mostly thanks to media), yes. And people usually ever pay attention to the jerk Bronies, like in YouTube comments... Kinda upsets me. Though I guess I shouldn't take it personally, not actually being one.
 
Oh thought you were not being serious (sorry about that). Yes I agree with this warped perception presented by the media. But as a whole society I feel that it is our responsibility to help change these stereotypes.
 
Disclaimer and I mean Disclaimer cause I am gonna talk about race alittle but please hear me out when I say I am not rascist or hold one race as victims/superior to another.

One problem I see with society is that many Caucasians aren't acknowledging that there are inequalities based on race in America and that Blacks and Latinos and even Muslims (sure thats not politically correct) always play victims when through Jim Crow ideology this is the result the imaginary man wanted and got. A lot of problems come from Whites reluctantly not admitting there is a wrong and taking that first step to help correct it. Now when it comes to Blacks the problem is letting Jim Crow win just cause we're free (yes im Black,Cherokee and Irish) doesn't mean we don't stop working hard. Blacks aspire to obtain the wrong things and it doesn't help we project and take pride in the image media has projected for us.

Sorry I have to tell a story to get my point across. One day while playing Magic at a card shop in a town primarily White, at the age of 12, a Older White male had been eyeing me all night. So I finally turned my head to acknowledge that he was looking at me and to my surprise he had stripped a coke bottle of its wrapper(the cola is brown) and made a tiny noose that he placed over the bottle and let hang for a bit. I looked around to see if anyone noticed but no. It was seven years before I would return. Racial profiling happens to me based on an assumption I didn't create but have to deal with all the time. Its starting to physically hurt me to hear or see it. Now believe me I have a balance group of White and Black friends and I let both say Nigga and even hear Nigger from my White friends sometimes but I'm ok...but if an outside source says best believe it won't fly anymore (and im not resulting to physical violence if you thought that).

Next issue: Society is dumbing down and I hate it. What the fuck does Kim Kardashian fucking do? Exactly, why does she make more than Teachers Fireman and Police(I support respectable Police). Sex sells and I won't lie and act mighty like I don't watch porn or like a beautiful looking Latina with curly hair and red lipstick (sorry), but we use it in everything that our beautiful young women and little girls don't know what true beauty is. Our men look for the wrong women who look for the wrong men and that's why nice guys and girls finish last. We chase shiny rocks instead helping the less fortunate or feeding our minds. Why spend millions on shiny rocks when you coupd help a less fortunate soul. Now I'm for looking nice and splurging on yourself but is it always needed? Our education gets over shadow by our funds to military and private companies and banks. Its hard to move up and prevent these problems when all I have to do is be female and blessed with an amazing body and some light or white skin and show that im willing to pose half or fully nude. I support the military but it should be a choice you make based on intrest not because its the better option.

Hypocrisy: People want to be "different"... by doing the same thing and looking the same

No respect over others personal interest.: WE ARE ALL GUILTY OF THIS. Do you think rap music isn't music because it doesn't use instruments? So if I record a beat using real instruments and say words that rhyme over it like some bands do...is it not music? What are The Roots? Oh you're talking about the crap you hear "niggas and white suburban kids"listen to,not Eydea Atmosphere Brother Ali,Lupe Fiasco or Immortal Technique. I love rock but don't really care for country but I'm not gonna bash it. People literally get judged based on what they listen to. My friends listen to the most "niggafied" shit, but they are respectable young men so please do the homework before you dismiss something.

Discrimination because of sexual orientation and gender identity when it's clearly no one's business if they aren't invited to the bedroom.

Ok let's try to keep the thread clear of blanket statements on a topic. Statements like these do not provide areas of discussion and can offend certain people. So please let's discusses these issues intelligently and try not to give our personal feelings on political issues..... If we don't this thread will start to lose it's original purpose.

So back on this issue of society as a whole and what issues face society. (Also @PKStoopKid Muslim is a politically correct term Islam is the religion Muslims are the followers of Islam so don't feel bad about using this term)

Every "race" is guilty of dragging itself and others down, but the way I see it, we are all brothers and sisters, no races separating us. Why do people always act shitty to each other?

after looking at everyone's opinions on this topic I have decided to make a new real talk thread titled "Real Talk Thoughts on the Human Condition" Just so that there are separate perspectives on these issues I kind of wanted this thread to be based on a macro perspective. The new thread will focus on the micro and mezo scale perspective of society and we can discuss these topics on a more personal scale :)

Also thanks guys for keeping this tread serious I really appreciate it :D
 
In history class, we learnt that it was the Mongols who sent Russia back into serfdom while every other country advanced. I think that instance of history is why Russia seems so... slow. They're trying to catch up to human rights and find a more formidable form of politics, but I really wish Russia didn't have the winter Olympics; because that may have set their citizens back in terms of wages and the amount of jobs.

So Russia is a weird country with people facing so much, like Chernobyl and their possible drilling crisis, but they seem to be in good spirits, at least for the most part.

As some of you might know planet earth is experiencing an exponential growth in population. With this growth comes several concerns that many people take for granted. I would love to discuss the current issues associated with this growth and the effect that it has on the whole planet.

So I guess I will start with the first topic: ENERGY

Going off the Russia discussion and Chernobyl; Nuclear power is a heated issue (do we support it? do we not support it?) I would like to discuss nuclear power or energy production as whole and talk about ways of producing power that will benefit society including the developed nations and the developing nations. (Just to explain why I am so interested in this stuff I am an environmental engineer so all of these topics are incredibly engaging for me and I love to talk about ways of making things "better")

I actually tried to discuss with my family the conditions of earth and how much we cut down rainforests, desertification, over population. All they did was say "Oh, there isn't overpopulation. We have enough resources in the world." They didn't even know what desertification was and my brother said this to me: "It doesn't matter if you try to help the world around or clean up the world. I mean, what if some phenomena happens and the world gets destroyed or something? Then all of your work goes to shit." That was the final nail in the coffin for me. Sorry if this veers into religion, but my family is Christian. All they tell me is that "whatever happens, God'll take care of it." And really, that's the issue with most of this world, they feel that some rich, wealthy, or powerful person will do something for them while they sit back and watch the fireworks.

India and the Ganges River: UUUUUUUghh! Why won't they clean that damn river?! It's the most
disgusting, wretched thing you could call water! If those people actually took action for their messes, then the sanitation issues there would dwindle significantly.

In short, there is no real initiative.

I would like to drop some points:

-Some people believe that those with disabilities are not capable of doing some tasks. There are times where they require assistance, but overdoing with the helping does not make things better.
-There are those (like abusive parents, for example) who have mistreated or even killed their children just for a having disability, saying they want "normal" children.
-People should not let themselves or others be ashamed of the disabilities they have. For example, I was born with a learning disability and Fibrous Dysplasia (abnormal bone growth). At first, some people were concern about me being able to do schoolwork and other things, but I had a family who supported me every step of the way. As I grew, I was capable of activities like tennis, math club, recording games, and so much more. Although there are some steps I need to take before moving out of my parents house, I am still developing myself to become more independent and capable of facing newer challenges. I only have a week until I take my final math exams and I look forward to attend the graduation as a Math Major.

I completely agree with your points its just a shame that all children with disabilities are not lucky enough to be born into a family that loves and supports them even with their flaws. I myself can relate to this as I have a serious case of ADHD which really had a negative effect on me as a child (I used to beat up people constantly for no reason 0_0). But the reason I was able to get where I am now was because my parents provided me with the support and love I needed to succeed. But some children are just not that lucky :(

Also congrats D-money on being so close to graduation! :D

No. A police state is much worse than what you may think.
Although kids are slowly being taught not to stand up for themselves and to be
more conforming to rules in order to evade ramifications (a common predecessor of a broken society),
we still have quite a lot of freedoms to be thankful for when compared to police states of history.

That being said if there is ever something you don't like about society, go against it without yielding.
It's important to be willing to fight for your own happiness.
 
Another issue we as a society in this little blue planet need to address is Global warming well that and over dependency on convenience
