I have been playing for a relatively long time, but I still have a lot of trouble learning combos. I have a few problems, first that it takes so long to learn them. I have a painwheel combo i've been working at for probaby 10 hours or more, and I still haven't even finished it. Also, learning a new combo almost always pushes the old one out of my head, and for this reason I only have one BnB for each character I play. Once I learn a combo I can do it easily, but I could use some advice and strategies for how to learn combos quicker and more successfully.

I like to do the combos in little segments making sure I can get the first part done and after I feel like I mastered that I move on to trying the next segment and so on.

Like Stuff said, work on small portions of a combo. It's often easier to practice one small segment at a time, plus it's fairly easy to put different parts of a combo together once you've figured out all of the little details.

I don't usually worry about combo optimization when I'm practicing or building combos. I prefer to focus more heavily on my combo consistency, so if a combo is too difficult or taking too long to learn then practicing a simpler combo is always a decent option.

Edit: btw, we haven't played in a while. We should do a short set sometime soon.

I'm going to agree with Stuff on this method. It's the way I go about learning new combos and characters so the process feels less like I'm taking on more than I can chew. Like anything else, just keep at it and I'm sure you'll get the hang of it.

Now if you are having problems with specific links or combo routes feel free to put those up. Might be able to find an easier alternative for you. On that note I say go with what you combos you can do consistently opposed to what is optimal. That is coming from someone that has played since the game has came out. You don't need to do the best combos available. Just make sure you can finish the ones you start!

One of the things I really love about this game is that you CAN do this. In most other games, even if you can hit a link early in the combo, hitting the same link late in the combo after a lot of hitstun scaling has happened can be much more difficult. Here you can practice the last part of the combo by itself without worrying the links have different timing or w/e.

OK I guess I was trying to do that, but with the addition of "if I finish this section, try the next one" and that might have been making it harder for me.

I am definitely not 100% on this, especially with my small layer of rust from a short break. Guess I should be worrying about that more than new combos.
