IMO best Metroidvania in years.

Basically, it's a randomly generated Metroidvania. Your character class and "traits" are also randomly selected, and the castle and your character is re-rolled every time you die (though you do get to keep your level ups, and bosses killed stay dead).

The controls just feel ridiculously good, the boss fights are intense, the rpg elements are excellent, and the whole game just feels great to play. Honestly it would be amazing fun even without the randomly generated element, but that just goes further to make the game feel dynamic.

My favorite complaint I keep hearing about the game is that people ran out of excuses to play it on new game +8. I think that speaks more in favor of the game then anything else.

I really want to play this. I've intended to for a while, especially since I'm working on a metroidvania style game myself.

I highly recommend buying it from the developers website rather then Steam, Desura, or any other such distribution service. The reason being, they are offering it there for the same price, but will give out a DRM free copy as well as a Steam key. So you're essentially getting it twice. You can either use the Steam key yourself if achievements/trading cards are your thing on Steam, or you can stick with the DRM free copy and gift the key to a friend.

The best part is that each life is a descendent of your previous life, and as such some traits may carry over.

Except if your previous life character is gay, in which case your descendents will all be completely re-rolled.

Definitely recommend, even though the game is ridiculously punishing.

I wouldn't call it punshing (at least, not in the sense that ExtraCreditz would talk about "punishing"). I think the game does a great job of making sure things are always fair. It is pretty tough though.

I'm actually working on trying to see if I can do a low death run of the normal game, beating it in under 4 deaths. So far I've managed to ALMOST beat Herodotus. It's pretty fun, and the NG+'s really train you for it.

I wouldn't call it a metroidvania honestly. The feel of a metroidvania can't really be achieved with random generation. It's less about exploration and more about caution. Not really a negative to the game, it just doesn't have that SotN feel in which you progressively uncover more of this big area, revealing new areas as you get more powerful and gain new abilities.
And I always see people calling it a grind and I have no clue what they're talking about. How does one grind in a game that doesn't let you save up money?

Punishing in a game generally refers to a harsh penalty to the lose state. Which this game definitely has, but it does it well.

All your heirs are completely random and not based on their descendants. The gay trait does almost nothing (it changes the ending cutscene, but... yeah.)

They may be talking about NG+, where you almost have the manor complete and you need to farm the castle severely to level one stat.

I think the gay status used to change the positions of certain statues in the game (as a joke), but they removed in a patch. Otherwise yeah, gay is a "neutral" trait. Flavor text, pretty much.

I've been watching a youtube playthrough of the game and while it was on my radar before, watching those videos really shot it up to the top of my Steam wishlist. It looks really fun and while i've seen that it can be hard it looks like one of those games that give off that just one more time feel after every defeat. I'd get it if I had the funds but school textbooks took a bite out of my wallet this semester. =/
Hopefully it'll be on sale during the November Steam sale.

Addiction really sums it up. I keep on telling myself "I'll play one life then go finish my homework" and then it turns into 10 lives lol. I've been forced to retire from games quite a bit for the past two weeks, so I probably won't have to worry about that till things ease up a bit anyway.

thanks for the tip.

Been wanting to get it, said want skyrocketed ever since Steam Train happened.
I'll probably nab it during the inevitable Winter Sales

Ha, they're exactly the same reason why my want for the game rose as well. =p
By the way, the game will apparently be 40% off on Steam this weekend.
So now would be a good time to try and get it unless you want to wait for the Fall sale.

Ah but there's the issue. I can't really buy games this soon.
Investing in a system soon
