ShaqFu: A Legend Reborn

If this succeeds, it will be the death of kickstarter.

Coming next on Kickstarter: Superman 64 HD Remastered GotY Edition featuring Dante from the Devil May Cry series. :PUN:

Also, that's not Shaq. That's freakin' Craig Marduk. Just saying.

I don’t know why, I seriously don’t know, but I want to see this happen. I know it will be mediocre at best and it’s not a fighting game anymore but… I want it. It’s so cheesy and dumb, it needs to become real. I know it’s wrong, I hate myself for it too, but I can’t help it.

I see a possible crossover opportunity. Lab Zero could add Shaq into Skullgirls, and his story mode will have him seeking justice against the Mafia as well as defeating Marie. At the end he introduces a sport called 'Basketball' to New Meridian, where all the kids strive to become the most valuable player in their game.

Let Nurse Valentine appear in the new Shaq-Fu game, where she will be working undercover as one of the ninjas Shaq fights but she ends up assisting him along the way, and occasionally letting the player play as her. 36E in 3D.

I don't know how to feel about this. The Kickstarter page stresses that the game is only related to the original by title and character, and they intend on making a legitimately good game.

I would think that most people would donate to this Kickstarter because they are seeking another Shaq-based Fighting Game that is so bad it's good, when the only one of those things that this Kickstarter intends on funding is the "Shaq in a game" part.

Granted, simply wallowing in the original failure (success?) would also be a bad idea for a game, as it would more than likely turn into a bad self-referential parody attempt, but I honestly feel no reason to believe that the creators of this game can make a good game out of this IP.

The ideal scenario, if it succeeded, would be that the developers genuinely try to make a good game, but fail AGAIN, and make ANOTHER so bad it's good Shaq video game that fans love as much as Shaq Fu 1.

God that trailer was so gross.

I actually am really optimistic about this game. It's, in their words, "Streets of Rage meets Devil May Cry meets Street Fighter."

It has a really cool art style, the co-op and battle mode, the customizable Shaq, the playable bosses... it's what I love from games.

I'm donating $45 for the beta.

20 years has to be the longest a game waited for a sequel/reboot/whatever.

That being said, when's Body Blows Galactic 2? I'd pay good money for that.

Kid Icarus. 21 years.
Good point. Though if the Shaq game gets funded, it will likely beat the record by the time it's released.

Also I have extremely mixed feelings about Shaq-Fu. It was the first game I ever bought with my own money because I couldn't afford 80 bucks for SF2. And the sequel/remake isnt really a fighting game but a beat-em-up.

I just realised Shaq Fu is older than quite a lot of our regulars.

...where did all of that time go.

I think if they make it an actual fighting game they might mess it up. Plus they'll be competing with all these other really good games. A Beat-em-up sounds safer and should be harder to ruin. It might be fun. I like how it doesn't take itself seriously. Other than Clayfighter I can't think of too many other fighting games that don't take themselves too seriously.

I might actually end up donating my most biggest pledge I ever did in my life. lol

One of those crowdfunding campaigns where I won't drop a cent for. That is with ignoring the negative stigma from the original. Game is not a fighter anymore, but a beat-em-up genre now which alienates the few original fans the original had. Shaq could probably fund this whole ego project on his own anyway, but using IGG is a less risky venture if people actually buying the game. Better off putting my money at more worthwhile projects.

Shaq has 7 million followers on twitter though...If I could get even a fraction of them to visit my Deviantart, that would be great lol.^^;

Just think, If Lab Zero drops at least a grand to help fund this, they could potentially get more people to look at Skullgirls.

Well this was an awkward way of hearing some news today. ._.

Lab Zero sadly doesn't have a grand to drop. It would have to personally come out of the wallet of one of the employees or Mike, which I can't see happening, honestly.

Just read this description though. Does this not make you hyped?!?

Shaq Fu is what the original game should have been – an instant classic. We're talking Streets of Rage meets Street Fighter meets Devil May Cry. It’s a modern day take on the classic beat ‘em up. Play as Shaquille O’Neal – learn hundreds of moves and battle techniques, take on thousands of enemies with dozens of cool melee weapons, battle bosses in dynamic arenas, master cool finishing moves and play with your buddies in COOP mode or against each other in player vs player combat.

In Shaq Fu, dozens of unique and varied enemies await which require careful use of tactics. The game also features destructive environments, awesome power ups and a series of well-designed, beautiful levels with interesting progression. This is all tied together by what very well might be the story of the century, a performance worthy of an Oscar, by the Big Diesel, in his battle against a villain for the ages – the mysterious Black Star Ninja.

  • Play as Shaq as he kicks ass and takes no prisoners

  • Intricately designed combo system that leaves room for a variety of fighting tactics. Learn the moves and let Shaq rip against his enemies

  • Pimp your character with new moves and abilities. Select from different fighting styles or combine styles and create your own new discipline (Shaq FU is what you make it)

  • Challenges for even the best players.

  • Adaptive AI keeps the game exciting

  • Battles against hordes of enemies in the tradition of the lost art of the beat ‘em up. I mean, who could take Shaq one on one?

  • Take the challenge up to an entirely new level in unforgettable smack downs against awesome bosses.

  • Once you beat a boss you unlock him and can play as him in the game.

  • Fight through the slums of Asian cities, on the rooftops of skyscrapers. Battle it out inside buildings, seedy night clubs, and cause mayhem in the markets.

  • Smash an enemy through the floor and leap down to a lower level. Barge through walls and forge your own path. Smash furniture, toss enemies through windows, even collapse structures – when you are the Shaqbreaker everything is possible

  • A wide variety of melee and projectile weapons as well as various everyday objects that can be used as weapons – katanas, shurikens, baseball bats, the occasional basketball filled with the wrong type of gas, bottles, knives and dozens more. Don’t see a weapon you like? What about that manhole cover or that car door? You are Shaq after all, so maybe you want to hurl that motorcycle on a bunch of enemies at once. The world is your projectile.

  • Wipe out huge numbers of enemies at once. Bowl down enemies with balls of steel, create earthquakes of unprecedented power, slam dunk baddies with ease.

  • Modifiers that change your appearance and enhance your skills. Transform into the monstrous Big Daddy O and crush your enemies. Twirl into the Big Baryshnikov and pirouette your enemies like a tornado tearing through Kansas. Power up into the Big Diesel and steamroll your enemies into Kobe-Patties. A power-up for every nickname Shaq has ever had, and a few new ones for good measure.

  • Co-op Gameplay. Grab a friend and battle it out in tandem. Play as Shaq’s identical twin (no he doesn’t sell insurance) or select from a host of other playable characters with different skills and power-ups. Split screen action available, baby!

  • Co-op’s not your bag? Build up your character and fighting style and duke it out online or on the same machine against another player.

  • Once you have played through the main game revisit it to discover secret environments that you might have missed.

  • Think its over once the Black Star Ninja, is unmasked? Think again. Hosts of challenges await that pit you against the best Shaq Fu’s in the world.

I would suggest another Indiegogo campaign, but I don't think LZ would like another one heh.^^; I'd donate to that if I could though.

That's 7 million NEW potential players/customers for Skullgirls.

The problem is audience though. How many of Shaq's followers do you think are hardcore fighting game players? If anything, they're all, well, basketball fans.

Like, there are two people who would back/buy this game:
  • Those who like Shaq
  • Those who ironically (or not) enjoy Shaq Fu and want to continue it's (in)famous legacy.

I agree it would be awesome for SG to be more widespread, and I'd donate to help again if I could, but it's just not possible, and in the end wouldn't accomplish much.

Just spend robofortune's budget on donating to shaq-fu, man.
Makes perfect sense.

I've got an idea, they could take that grand and fund a more popular kickstarter than fucking shaq-fu.
Or, better, they take that grand and use it on actual marketing.

I was pretty hyped for the possibility of a Shaq Fu 2, but I kinda have mixed feelings about this being crowdfunded. Flexible funding campaigns generally make me feel weird (although I understand the approach they're doing it here) and, well, honestly, I'd rather raise 450K for more SG characters.

The game, however, seems to have potential. DMC-like games are fun (even when the mechanics are somewhat shallow, as in Deadpool), and not long rage attacks, giving a more traditional beat-em-up approach, can be enough to give its own twist. And, looking at the rewards and stretch goals, it seems that it will be a game with extra chars. Convince them to add Go to versus mode and presto! New Shaq fighting game.

I do, however, feel there is a lack of outrageousness on their approach. I mean, it shouldn't be a BAD game, but it should make you think "how the hell are they getting away with this?". I mean, for example: they added things like "Sneaqers" and "Sheet Musiq" on the rewards, but I want a game with Qaracthers, Soundtraq, High Sqore and DLQ (Downloadable Qontent). If they're going to do the MK spelling thing, might as well take it up to 11.

I'm not sure what I'm going to do about this one. Honestly, I kinda want the T-shirt.

Well, not really. At this point, Skullgirls has already been exposed to most of the people who keeps track of fighting games, but only a fraction of those people decided to pick the game up. Mere exposition to people who don't even play fighting games won't give better results.

[EDIT: corrected on the confirmed vs. mode by @Goodbye18000. That's what I get for just skimming through the page before commenting.]

Sounds like it would be a fun game.

If it's basketball theme I would love to use a custom soundtrack composed of Slam Jam mash ups. Than again, I already do that for Skullgirls.

You asked for it. >:3

Leave our mechanekomusume alone.

Even if by some bizarre twist of fate Robo-Fortune's budget is allocated, I'd rather have Lab Zero burn it on hookers n' blow.

Hey, I like the robot cat as much as the next guy, but lab zero's gotta get their priorities straight, y'know?

The problem is they don't have enough for another full character. Robo Fortune is not much in terms of money and work.

But none of this has anything to do with the beauty of Shaq Fu: A Legend Reborn, which, if they get to WiiU stretchgoal, has to be called "2 Shaq Fu U".

It started as a voice pack + palette but then Lab Zero, being the most super awesome devs of all time, felt like making RF a unique character. They did so out of their own volition. People would have been content with a metal-green Nadia with a different voice. After some time we got word her budget got expanded (I think because of a voice pack they had to cut?).
Maybe the money left is too much for smaller things like winposes and taunts but also not enough for a full-fledged character and RF is that middle-term.
And if Lab Zero wanted/want to support other projects, there's much better choices. Choices more stylistically in-tune with Skullgirls.
But hey! I'm not Mr Bartholow, I don't call the shots.

But yeah, this is going OT. RF is a much more interesting discussion then "people will fund just about anything" but whatever. :3

Did-- did you guys not realize that I've been joking this whole time? Did you think I was serious? About giving robo-fortune's budget to shaq-fu?

"We wont FU it up"

Makes it a beat em up
