Persona 3 is very dark, even by SMT standards, I believe.
bionic commando did it first Kappa
I'm from Eastern Europe. I only played P4A, found Akihiko and Mitsuru cool and I'm addicted to "Heartful Cry" track.
Persona 4 Arena I'm not sure is a very good place to start.
I only bought it because it was developed by ArcSys. I seriously never even heard of Persona nor SMT when P4A was announced. Speaking of which, I don't remember when was the last time I played P4A. Went back to SG Steam Beta, TTT2, UMvC3, Divekick and was trying out some other characters besides Baiken when the +R Patch was released for GGXX AC+.
Nah, I can see why. SMT is hard and the fact SMT IV is hard isn't surprisingI started playing the Shin Megami Tensei series with Persona 3 and 4. Those two games are my most favorite games of all time. I've never had more fun with a video game than when I was playing those two. I eat up absolutely anything Persona-related.
I tried playing Shin Megami Tensei 4, and I disliked it so strongly that I dropped it after a few hours. It was too hard for me. I kept dying over and over in the tutorial dungeon, and I kept failing to recruit demons. I got frustrated and upset, and I quit playing it.
Am I considered the lowest of bottom-dwelling scum by SMT fans?

It's got an air of despair and hopelessness, and the ending is supposedly extremely depressing.
Plus you can't command your allies (Unless you're playing Persona 3 Portable), so it's hard.
Persona 4 on the other hand is far more upbeat, charming, and has a bright look (Yellow as opposed to Persona 3's dark blue), everyone in America prefers Persona 4, so I would start there, I think?
Both games are hard, though. Especially Persona 3. You can't control your companions, they're AI controlled and I've heard they can ruin fights by doing the wrong move.
Atlus is just the king of JRPGs..... no I am not counting that awful HBO themed game they made... or produced.Right there with ya brother!
Let's see, first SMT game was P3:FES, then I got P4, when I got my 3DS my first game was Devil Survivor Overclocked, got DS2 but I never beat it,and finally I got SMT4 on release day.....also still haven't beaten it yet. >__>;
So far I have to say that I have greatly enjoyed all these games though the Persona games a little more so but overall a great series that has pretty much become my new favorite RPG series.
Their JRPGs are so..... Long.... and... and HARD!
I think the best admission of making hard games was around the time Megaman 9 came out.
Imo it's less dark then the mainline series.
Oh yes, Nocturne is pretty rough. Early game isn't too hard, until you get to your first major fiend battle and hear this song playing
