Skullgirls Encore on Linux

I posted this same thing in the Steam community thread and figured it should be here too:

Hey all! I am pestering people to let me talk about Linux version news and I haven't gotten the green light to speak publicly about it yet. The moment I am able to I will give you news! It's really frustrating for me, after professing that I would give more frequent updates, that something would come up that would make me unable to talk about it. :( I'll explain once I can finally talk about it.

I wanted to clear up some confusion about the content coming to 2nd Encore. First of all, the eventual Linux version will be identical to the PC version. This means that if we're able to bring the 2nd Encore content from the PS4/Vita versions - i.e. voiced story mode, challenges, etc - to PC as DLC, then that will be an option for the Linux version as well.

I think someone on here asked if they would have to purchase the Linux version separately on here, and the answer is no. If you own the game on Steam already, once the Linux version is released, you will automatically own that version too.

I think I might cry when if/when I am finally able to boot up 2nd Encore on my Mac. I'll finally be able to really get back into my favorite fighting game. Thank you so much @cybik for all the work you've done and a huge thanks to you @render for all you've done too.

I'm intrigued as to this new, mysterious development, but it's totally understandable if you've got to keep it on the DL. Thanks for the update, and thanks again for all of the volunteers' support!

Just so you guys know, it's killing me too - trust @render on this one. And even with that I'm trying to help where I can be of use.

(I actually tracked down and whacked a HELL OF A STUPID ONE.)

So, one, sound bugs and Boost bugs are pure crap.

Two, I think music in fights is tentatively working. Not "fixed", mind you, as the code quality is ish and the code itself works differently than the other platforms and that creeps me out, but tentatively, fighting scene music is fixed.

Took me some "months" (basically week-ends where I manage to boot my brain for about 10 hours for Skullgirls coding because on the week ya nope) to finally iron out that one a bit. Next up is "Voice-Overs on Helium 101", which is most likely easy to fix but I'm a scrub at porting so what the hell.

Oh cool less hassle to jump on to play some SG on my macbook whenever I'm using it for other things.

Yooooo way cool! And it's even got legit funding!

I especially like the BeoPenguin Referee's palette.

EDITORIAL COMMENT: I like you guys in here. On r/linux_gaming there's a whole bunch of haters who don't care about the curse, or Lab Zero and the game's history, only focusing on the factoid that "OMG THIS WAS PROMISED LAB0 ARE A BUNCH OF /vulgar british word for vulva; there's a couple/". Thank you all for not hating.

You're not. And the progress made is, let us say, very convincing.

Oh my stars. If I didn't know better, I would be thinking Annie is smiling at me.

Whoa there. Maybe you're not quite as used to this as the rest of us are, but saying stuff like that leads people to think Annie is playable or something. (@Everyone - SPOILER: SHE IS NOT)

That said, yes, the progress on the Linux version has been super great! I wish they would respond to my email about sharing info, though. :[ I'll poke them again about it.

My intent wasn't to invoke The Annienator; my apologies.

I think Skullgirls will be the first fighter to get a mac port since The Untouchable from 1997.

(we have been deprived for so long...)

The Linux port looks like it's coming along nicely, but I still don't have my Skillgurls fix, dammit! So I've been trying to use Wine 1.6 to run the game on Ubuntu.

The game seems to freeze up at the loading screen with George waddling along the bottom. Anybody have any idea what the problem is?

No dice. :(

This may or may not be relevant, but whenever I try to launch the game, the Steam Client tries to install "Microsoft VC Redist package" or something like that. It doesn't seem to be causing any direct problems, but apparently other people have had problems with the Steam client itself freezing up right there before the game is even launched. Don't have that problem, though.

Then I can't help. Last I tried I could launch it but that was a while ago.

You'll like the port :)

Phooey. Thanks for the info, though, even if that info didn't solve my problem.

EDIT: It works with PlayOnLinux. Not sure what the problem was with regular wine, but now it all works.

Quick question: will Skullgirls on Mac and Linux be the 2nd Encore edition? I was thinking about it ever since the pre-orders on PS4 went live.

They'll be identical to the Windows version, which is "2nd Encore" in the sense that it has the same characters and gameplay, as well as a title screen that says "2nd Encore," but it will not have voiced story mode, challenges, trials, etc. We hope to release that stuff as DLC on Steam (i.e. Windows/Mac/Linux) at some point in the future.

Ah, I see. Thanks for the information.

Hey all! So we are looking for a few volunteer testers for the Linux and Mac versions. We want people who are willing to put the game through its paces. That means spending time in training mode, versus, utilizing all of the various features and settings the game has. You will be given Beta access and expected to report any bugs you encounter on an Google document that I'll provide.

You will be credited in the game as a tester! I'll see if I can provide other giveaways as well - probably some digital goods - but right now all I can guarantee is a credit in the game.

If you're interested, please send me an email at earl@labzerogames.com or send me a private message here on Skullheart.

People with actual game testing experience preferred!!

I'm going to cap it at around 10 or so people for each version.

Hopefully this is a good indication to people that good things are happening SOON! :D
