(I'm posting this here as I don't want to fill the actual beta thread with offtopic discussion)

A little while ago in the beta thread I asked Mike about the possibility of the getting the final patch applied to the DRM-free version of Skullgirls released in the Humble Bundle. He replied with:

That's up to Humble, actually. It's easy to provide them with builds but it's their choice.

I decided to reach out to Humble Bundle support with the same question, mentioning the above. They in turn replied with:

Hello there,

Thank you for writing in! We reached out for an updated build of the DRM-Free file for Skullgirls back in May of this year. Due to piracy concerns, it was decided that we would not be receiving an updated DRM-Free build for this game. It is true that there are circumstances where it is up to Humble Bundle to request an updated build. However, we did reach out for a new build, and did not receive the updated build.

We apologize for the inconvenience. If you have any additional questions, please do not hesitate to reach out!

Can anyone from LZ weigh in on this? If the final answer is "No" because of piracy I completely understand. The only reason I ask is because the DRM-free build is convenient as the install is fairly self-contained and "clean" on Linux. The final installed product amounts to a folder containing the game files, a ".desktop" file for whatever program menu your DE uses and a folder for holding your savefile and config (both of which are located in ~/.local/share). Contrast this to installing Steam (at least on my distro of choice) which pulls in a lot of extra libraries and tends to scatter a mess of symlinks and folders throughout your home folder.

I also understand that my reasons using the DRM-free build are far outweighed by the potential abuse of DRM-free releases. But I assume it doesn't hurt to ask anyway.

Oh, they got it wrong-ish. We told them we wouldn't add the PS4-stuff-as-Steam-DLC to it because of piracy concerns, but I'd certainly like to make an updated BUILD.
So uh. I'm not sure what now. :^P

Thanks for clarifying Mike. If it can't be done in the end, it can't. I just thought i'd ask anyway.

a "DRM free" version wouldn't be able to use steam for matchmaking, would it?

It already exists (the question is in regards to updating it) and you're correct. No netplay.

While it is a limited use-case, i'm quite comfortable with no netplay. I either play with AI or local play with friends.

Of course, I'm not discounting it at all. I use the HB version of SG to do my skullmodding. It makes a nice sandbox. It's also good for training mode while I wait in QM or something in the retail version of the game.

Glad to hear it. I'm curious, do your mods then work on retail? From what I can see the version difference between the current HB version and retail is rather wide at the moment.

I haven't used it for that exact purpose in a while so it's possible they're different enough now to cause issues, not sure, though the way I do it shouldn't make a difference because what I'm doing is:

Make a mod (stage recolor/music replacement is all I do)
Test it in HB SG so that I don't botch my retail SG's files
If it worked, take those recolored textures/songs and slide them into my retail SG with Skullmod

Since I do it that way, I shouldn't run into many, if any, compatibility issues..

Also, I can make my training mode stage 100% black with Skullmod in HB SG for seeing hitboxes and whatnot and then go play retail/beta SG and get random stage on QM and not get a black stage. That's also useful.

Beta is VERY different than HB for sure though, so when beta hits, you might have more concerns, though I still doubt it will affect texture/song replacement unless you're packing the .gfs for HB SG and just trying to drop that into retail/beta. (Even then, if they were the same version, I imagine it'd be fine. But I don't do it that way. Might accidentally write black training mode stage into retail and have to play that online..)

Anyways this is pretty OT but.. you seemed interested so that's what/how/why/etc I use HB SG for a Skullmod sandbox and training mode edition of SG. It's also REALLY GOOD on my low power devices that I don't want to run Steam on just to do some training mode stuff..
