Skullgirls Spinoff game?

No TMNT? For Shame.

I thought of mentioning TMNT and Double Dragon, but I'm not sure how influential the former was. It's been a while since I played it, so I can't say if its on par with Capcoms late-genre efforts like Punisher/Armored Warriors/AVP, and at least I don't think it moved the genre forward like some of Capcoms games did. I think I'd relegate it to "honorable mentions" along with Silk Road, Sonic Blast Man 2, Ninja Base Ball Batman, Captain Commando, etc.

There's also Battletoads, but I'm not sure I'd count the Nes game as a beat em up. The SNES one is a beat em up for sure, albeit an awful one. The arcade version of the original is actually a pretty solid game, but like TMNT its not the most innovative thing out there (aside from the unique sense of humor).

Also make sure you play them on one credit though...you didn't really beat the game if you do it on more than one coin.
HEYYY! I spent my allowance money to beat X-Men! You can't take that away from me!!

But yeah, you're right for the most part. You listed some great games too. I want to acknowledge that I actually had fun with Streets of Rage 3, and Golden Axe 3, but I agree with others that despite the added features, they were definitely missing something from their predecessors. I also think TMNT Manhattan Project is very underrated these days, but nostalgia obviously plays a bigger role in the overall charm of those games now. Hyperstone Heist in particular has aged terribly.

Anyway, a SG beat-em-up as a spinoff does sound like an interesting idea. I'd actually like it if the playable cast extended outside of the school environment, but still consisted of characters that weren't in the DLC Vote at all. I'd love to go on an adventure with Old Man Octopus!

Heh, I would make an exception for X-Men. Despite how much I enjoyed playing through it with friends (I think I've done so like 4-6 times or something), that's part of the reason it's fallen down in my esteem recently. If I recall correctly, there are some luck based elements in the final stage that combine with the extreme length and lack of health/resources to make a 1cc pretty much a crapshoot. Fun game for multiplayer and the presentation, but quarter munching design :(.

I haven't actually played Streets of Rage 3 (I only owned 1 as a kid, though I played through 2, which many people say is the best, with a friend on an emulator a year or two ago), but I'm familiar with some of the backlash against it. Doesn't help that there's still a debate over which version of the game (original or localized) is better, considering one is apparently way too easy and the other is way too hard. And that's not getting into the soundtrack, which Yuzo Koshiro apparently composed with a computer program based on random numbers (seriously lol).

For TMNT, I've never gotten to play Manhattan Project unfortunately. I own the cartridges for 1 and 2 on the Nes, Turtles in Time, and the snes fighting game which is surprisingly excellent. Turtles in Time is definitely a winner, and a game I should probably replay pretty soon. Hyperstone Heists main issue was being repetitive right? I seem to recall it was pretty long and drawn out for a brawler.

I too would love a skullgirls beat em up. A Metroidvania could work too, especially since I remember Alex said he'd like to make one of those (though I believe that was planned to be "Vulcan Heel".
