Skullgirls Stage & Background Discussion

Well Brain Drain was the right choice when we were voting on DLC characters. It's a shame you lot chose.... poorly.

Given how ever since day 1 Nightmare Crest has been in Painwheel's story the same way Glass Canopy was in Parasoul's, Brain Drain might very well call dibs on the stage.
 
It's something we always wanted to do, even in the original release. When we decided to do a Fukua story mode, we asked Willy if he'd be able to knock this out, and he was. Then Vince offered up a remixed theme.

The whole thing was pretty spontaneous and organic, and was done in like less than a week?

Willy and Vince are champs. Love their work.

We put it in Painwheel's story mode, too.

I was about to suggest this and then you go and do it anyways. You guys are too cool.
 
With Fukua and this stage's inclusion on top of everything we've gotten so far dang this game feels so much better then back then when it just started.

I always thought it was like in a bad dream how it seems nothing around the entire world can move, gives it a creepy out of this world vibe, also DIES SCREAM
 
Anyway, I kinda like the ... Err ... Gala Stage. The Stage with that ultra cute father-daughter dance in the background.
Love the soundtrack.
Love the effects.
Love the atmosphere.

Just out of curiosity, are we supposed to be taking the stages that we fight on in
Fukua's story mode
as those character's "default" stages? It'd be interesting if it was cause there were, like, 2 that surprised me.

Why are any of them surprising?

Big Band = Under the Bridge, appears there in his story mode alongside the rest of Lab 8, has music specifically tailored towards him
Squigly = Meridian Rooftops, the original stage made for her update, with the alt version being the one she fights in on her story mode
Marie = Final Atrium, ruins of the cathedral she destroys in every story mode
Double = The cathedral you fight her in in every story mode
Valentine = Ruined version of Lab 8, as she is responsible for destroying it in two other story modes
Painwheel = Rooftops Assault; in Big Band's story mode she is instructed to go here in a plot to kill Marie while she's distracted
Ms. Fortune = Little Innsmouth, her home
Parasoul = Glass Canopy, appears in her story mode and is likely a government/military fixture judging by Panzerfaust/Adam/Umbrella/Parasoul being in its background
Peacock = Lab 8, place where she was constructed
Cerebella = River King Casino, obviously a Medici-owned casino going by Cerebella's dialogue in Big Band's story mode. Additionally, it wouldn't make sense for Cerebella's stage to be Medici Tower in Fukua's story mode since... you see it floating in the air half-destroyed when you fight Painwheel earlier on?
Filia = Nightmare Crest. Suitable that Filia has a nightmare where she gets beaten up by a doppelganger in a nightmare stage, I think.
 
Rooftops Assault wont make sense either, since Fukua has already defeated Marie when she fights Painwheel. :^)

Just that "DLC" stages were used when all of the game's original stages weren't all used.

But it's also strange that you fight Marie as, like, the 3rd fight. Which leads to the Rooftop Assault not making sense. And the Medici Tower thing could've just been negated by fighting Cerebella first. It's not a big deal obviously, but it was still just something I noticed.

The sequence of opponents faced in Fukua's story is the order of them being revealed in reverse. Can't shuffle things around without throwing away that idea.
Marie being still alive can be explained, if it has to be. Fukua didn't appear to go after the Skullheart. She might have just defeated Marie to show dominance and then moved on down the ladder towards Filia.
Cerebella is already fought in the River King Casino in two other story modes, establishing the connection of both her and the Medici with it. No need to move her anywhere else, really.
 
Oh. I suppose they are in that order. Must not have been paying attention that much.

The bottom line was that I thought it was strange that stages that have been in the game since the start remain "unassigned" so to speak while stages that were created afterward have. That's all.

If we take the 3 other characters that are "supposed" to be there, Black Dahlia would probably be right at home in the Medici Tower. Would Umbrella be the Streets of New Meridian, then? Not-boss-Marie would be...?

Even dreams have to make SOME sense.
That's why you never get regular Rugal in any KOF Dream Matches, but Omega Rugal instead.
 
There's a lot of sense of having new stages used in Fukua's story. I see it as a way of promoting new content. Story modes are often the place where new players hop in first, and where else in the story can you fight against Squigly/Big Band or stroll around the Glass Canopy. There is a free Skullgirls month on PS+ (and occasional free weekends on Steam), someone who hasn't played Skullgirls since vanilla picks it up, fires up Fukua's story because why not and gets a big dose of "look how much new cool stuff we made!".

There is a pattern in the opponent sequence and the stages match said opponents, but I'd say that's more of a secondary bonus rather than the main point. Still, everything makes sense lore-wise since just because stuff is being promoted, doesn't mean it can't be done smart. All it takes is giving a damn, and Lab Zero cares enough to give it.

why oh why did you guys not keep the music the way it was in Glass Canopy? i love In A Moments Time..now I gotta beat the game to hear it again?...boo...I dont even like playing there anymore.. the song fit Glass Canopy to a tee IMO...Maplecrest is back to being my fav...or maybe River King Casino....Eliza's stage is dope btw..dope, dope, dope..

there is a code to change the music
type ifearchange during the start up and you can have the song that was made to be credits as your glass canopy stage

I think that is Panzerfaust's Tank, cause you can see him behind where the tank is going back & forth.
 
I do kind of agree that new creepier Maplecrest does kind of make more sense for Painwheel rather than Fukua (because it could be memories of her old life suppressed by Brain Drains control), but i like it a lot and i really like the new music for glass canopy, it makes a little more sense than "a moment's time" for Parasoul because i think a song about the skullheart would probably bring back bad memories of her mother rather than good ones. Anyone got any ideas of what robo-fortunes stage/music could be like?

wow these stages in the video that aren't in the game I wish they were, I would love to see that water ruins stage and that city plazy stage
It kinda reminds me of Eliza's stage...
My favorite stage is New Meridian, btw.

so they updated medici tower (in addition to another important feature that we are already discussing in other threads)

the major things to notice are:
1. the floor is now reflective and has more detail
2. the signs in the background are super animated now

of course, i think they'll need to update it a bit more since there are two issues that arise from these updates:
1. the playable characters themselves cast no reflections. will probably be added later? either that or everyone happens to be SECRET VAMPIRES. (and not just eliza, who actually IS a secret vampire.)

2. the animated buildings are nice. but if you've seen the rooftops stages or big band's story mode, you'd know medici tower is so massively tall, that from lorenzo's top floor office no other buildings should be visible. they probably could have the buildings with the signs appear earlier in the rising section then disappear before getting to the top and have a nice horizon view at the top. just like Mr. X's office in streets of rage 2. ALSO STREETS OF RAGE 2 IS AWESOME.

i do like they're updating existing stages still. its pretty cool to see all these new additions.

edit: also missed this: there a new npc on the structure on the way up: a homeless filia.

There's actually a few other alterations.
1) Ottomo and Vitale will not always appear on the stage.
2) The windows of the elevator have reflections now too.
3) Secret :P (Hint, the trip up the elevator is not so boring now if you keep a sharp eye)
