The Game Awards (2014)

It took me about 10 minutes of reading through this thread to realize the majority of these posts were a year old.

At this point I'd say Sackboy is the leading mascot character.

Kratos and Sackboy?
I mean, they're not specifically Sony, but they're definitely Playstation mascots.
and that's kinda where it falls apart
Sony doesn't really have a lot to their name themselves
the Playstation just so happens to have a lot of notable games on it
so you don't really have a cohesive identity for the game that crosses them over since it's not really Sony putting in work, they're just going "uuuuh people liked these games" and tossing things in all ramshackle without any real sense of oneness
plus you know
all the advertisement
that was pretty bad
and the "special moves only" thing
that was pretty bad
and the stages being mishmashes
that was pretty bad

Well, that's the reason it's called Playstation All-Stars instead of Super Sony Wars or whatever.

The advertisement was bad, yeah, but it really only impacted a couple things, all the pointless DmC content, Raiden's inclusion (though I liked Raiden), but it still brought in a lot of characters that nobody had really heard of before, like Emmet Graves or Sir Daniel.
Really I wouldn't have had a problem with it were it not for the lack of some of the most iconic Playstation all-stars liek Crash or Spyro or Lara Croft.

I liked the supers only thing, it put an interesting spin on the platform fighter genre, aka only Smash Bros. because if anyone else dares to touch that suddenly they're ripping Nintendo off and are a sellout.
I couldn't tell you how much it actually enhanced the gameplay, really that kind of thing is probably what led to the game being so predictable, and contributed heavily to how overplayed Raiden was, but I like that they did something different.

And the stage mashup concept is the greatest idea ever and you'll never convince me otherwise.

a concept only goes as far as its execution
you can have an amazing idea then just shit the bed by not really thinking it through
they didn't really think anything through
and it shows

I will defend Raiden's inclusion for PS all stars considering his first introduction into the metal gear franchise was MGS2 on the PS2, so it makes more sense for him to be picked over Snake.

Raiden works because in hindsight, MGR is a pretty defining last gen game that was on PS3.
The same way that Dante doesn't because in hindsight nobody even remembers that game.

Wait are we talking about the supers or the stage mashup?

If you can't in some way appreciate a giant onion man in a gi karate chopping a 25 story tall spider death mech then I don't even know what's wrong with you.

To be fair, the dev team didn't have much to work with in the way of resources or support from Sony, they were let go pretty much immediately after the game was finished, and they were constantly cockblocked from getting any of the cool licenses (Crash, Spyro) on account of having no money to negotiate them.

The entire premise was doomed from the start, Sony realized this halfway through, cut the funding, and released a half-finished game. They would have been far better off creating a new IP with original characters from the get-go, because it's not like Sony had strong character brands to begin with. Trying to compete with Smash by using the same premise was just a dumb idea.

For the record, there IS a dedicated thread for PS All-Stars if you wanna keep talking about t. :P
