hopefully all companions are essential, unless you turn it off ala New Vegas Hardcore mode.

Was about to say they were in Vegas with the right perks, but remembered there's no way to eat ED-E. So close, yet so far.

I feel like if you're not eating everything that walks your're playing Fallout all wrong.

We have our first confirmed immortal NPC: The dog. Bullshit. The first thing I wanted to do was eat the bastard.

Well that's weird, I don't want a dog to be companion. I want an Enclave Eyebot. GIVE ME AN EYEBOT DAMN IT. ED-E MY LOVE, WHERE DID YOU GO?

Anyone have any info on addiction in Fallout 4?
I want Nuka-Cola addiction back. Then I could relate to my character with my obsession for Cola.

They should make cannibalism an addiction and when you don't eat enough people your only speech option is "Eat their face."

I didn't like how F3/Vegas handled addictions, really. Or rather, didn't handle at all - if you can take a magical anti-drug drug or go to a doctor to remove an addiction with one injection for a negligible sum of caps, there is no addiction mechanic.

In F1/F2 you knew drugs are dangerous to play with, because if you got addicted, you were suffering withdrawal for a week and there was no way around it - other than taking more of the drug to temporarily counter it, which still meant cold turkey time will come, just a bit later. And if you got addicted to jet, you're a junkie for either the whole game or 3/4 if you manage to help develop a cure later on.

I know it won't come back since it wasn't casual, but I didn't agree with F3 making drugs "casual". Old Fallouts properly conveyed the idea that a drug addiction is a downward spiral, which I found a good and immersive thing.

Oh, an Eliza/Sekhmet playthrough, very cool!

Wow that sounds so much better. I need to play Fallout 1 and 2. I bought them on Steam a while back but never actually touched them.

The steam versions are broken if I remember correctly, the GOG ones run perfectly. Also when you decide to play them you should download the unofficial patch and restoration pack for both of them. Especially for fallout 1, that game is a glitched mess.

Eh, dunno if I agree with these points. By which I mean I probably don't.

Unofficial patch - I reckon it might not hurt since bugfixes are objectively good (assuming they don't introduce more bugs), but I wouldn't say either of the games are buggy enough to desperately need it. I usually forget/am too lazy to find and install them when I'm in a mood for F1/F2 and I'm fine.

Restoration mods - I'd advice against it, in the first playthrough. They're ok, but they're not exactly on the same level as the vanilla game content, and so might lower the quality of the average location/quest/dialogue. Playing for the first time with a mod makes it easy to mix up what was and wasn't originally in the game - and possibly blame the game for something that was never part of it. It's a good thing to try out on a 2nd playthrough once you already know the game though, to see the world expanded a bit thanks to fan efforts.

What's wrong with the Steam versions?

How similar will this new Fallout be to NV? I enjoyed that game.

Based on the setting, the scavenging, powered armor/Brotherhood/Enclave stuff, and the player-based world building, it looks like they're pretty much following up Fallout 3. The aesthetic is likely going to be more "bulky power armor" than "badass longcoat." Hopefully we'll see a lot of armored Colonial-style clothing pieces. That would be cool. Hopefully we'll get some references to New Vegas; it's easily one of my favorite games ever. Maybe a reverse Lewis and Clark expedition from the NCR to discover the Atlantic Ocean?

Didnt GoG have to take down Fallout 1, 2, and tactics for whatever reason?

Yeah, Interplay basically lost the rights to sell the old ones and Bethesda didn’t want to cut a deal with GOG. You can’t purchase FO1, 2, or Tactics there a the moment

At the moment? It's been like that for a yesr now.

Oh wow, I had no idea, I've had the gog versions for years.

What do y'all think about how they'll balance speech in this game?
In my opinion, all the Fallouts before New Vegas were basically "Keep reopening the save file until it works"
And now with New Vegas they made speech more worth skilling, also pussy way to get out of combat (I'm looking at you, Lanius).

So do you think they'll follow the formula that is New Vegas's or go back to the old style?
Did you skill speech before to the maximum for easy modo or other reasons?
Do you think speech should be reworked somehow?

Huh, now that it's been mentioned, I recall that situation.

GOG was indeed forced to take down F1, F2 and Tactics from their store, but did the best out of the situation and (while they still had the rights to sell those titles) allowed everyone with a GOG account to "purchase" those games for free for a month or so just before they had to remove them from the store (with everyone who did so keeping those titles in their GOG library forever).

It was both a nice gesture to all players that more than made up for future inconvenience, and a big juicy middle finger to Bethesda.

Speech was pretty great in NV, especially if you wanted your character to roleplay as a mostly pacifist influential speaker in a playthrough that can win key battles [and maybe save some lives] through the power of words instead of bullets or blades. Not to mention free exp in regular dialogue exchanges.

Usually on my first game I invest a lot into speech as it's rewarding to help achieve a solution otherwise impossible thanks to good negotiating skills. But then, I don't really like successful speech rolls "save" me from doing stuff. "You passed a speech check and now no longer have to do that battle or retrieve this item in that quest, isn't it grand that you don't have to play the game?"

That said, my second character in a Fallout game is usually socially inept, as I keep him speech low on purpose so that he'll fail checks and be forced to do stuff. I generally liked how Vegas handles speech with there being a clear 23/40 signal of how much speech you have vs how much you need rather than F3's "57% chance of success, reload until it works". However, I also prefer how older Fallouts handled it with speech giving you things otherwise unachievable, rather than resulting in skipping stuff. Old approach made me want to invest a lot in speech, new one as presented on the above example makes me want to keep it at a minimum.

I liked that how it was their little "going away gift" for Fallout when they could have done nothing at all. Getting those games for free was a bitch at first due to all the traffic.

Plus it included the patched versions, the manuals, artwork, and the fallout bible which is pretty cool too.

But Im wondering, isnt steam version of those games busted?

On the subject of speech n stuff, I liked how in FO:NV if your speech or science or whatever isnt high enough you just cant pick the option instead of "you have 25% of this working." I hope they put it back in FO4. That being their probably not gonna put it back in 4.

They didn't put the companion wheel in skyrim, so I doubt they'll change speech to rely on skill, wait skills aren't in the game anymore my bad.

What's busted with the steam versions? Are they still worth playing?

I believe they just don't function, it might just be an issue with win7 or win8. Not sure, I've never bought them on steam. I have heard horror stories from those who have however.

This is true. The last time I tried to play Fallout 2 again on Windows 7. The result was basically everything was rainbows ant it felt like I was in Candyland instead of a Wasteland, or I took too many shrooms (Probably the latter). Which then led to me searching for patches throughout the depths of The Internet.

I never had a problem with NV on PC but getting Fallout 3 to start is a nightmare it says on the page "Do not purchase if you have Windows 8" because it doesn't work.

I tried the game when I bought it and found a patch that fixed the rainbow issue. The same thing happened with Doom. I think it's an issue with DOS games.

Does anyone atleast remember any unique character from Fallout 3? Dunno, maybe it's just that I haven't played it for a few years now, and I just remember those kids with that one annoying dude constantly telling stories.
I feel like we're going to have more uninteresting characters, seeing how Bethesda is going to do all the writing. What do you think?
We need more people like this guy:
No, I'm not killing anymore weird ass plants for you. **** off. And no I don't feel well near you. Stop saying "You are well."
latest

Although, I wouldn't mind Sergeant Dornan making a random cameo-appearance.

I just want new factons, characters (why the fuck is Harold across the entire country?) and no brotherhood. Hell, the enclave shouldn't have even been in Fallout 3, and don't even get me started on Jet and how it makes no sense being in Three.

I wouldn't mind the Brotherhood if it was something minor like New Vegas. A.k.a served little purpose to the land around it. Since right now, don't the Brotherhood basically have an expanding empire in the Midwest? Why should they literally just blob the eastern coast as well? Which is why I liked New Vegas's idea of how they were heavily isolated.

Well as far as FO3 there's the one security guard in rivet city who doesnt know he is an android with a face change because he wanted to escape from his slave owner, and once you kill the slave owner the android gives you his plasma rifle (which is really good even if you dont put many points into energy weapons)

I think the mission was the called the replicated man.

There's also Three Dog, Dogmeat, and Fawks and that's it.

I've gotten Fallout 3 to work on Windows 8. Just download the unofficial patch and look up how to limit Fallout 3 to only use 2 cores on your cpu. Doing those two things should fix pretty much every problem in that game.
