The Smash Bros Discussion Thread

I'm honestly surprised a certain whale Pokémon didn't become a stage.
...Poke Floats 2 confirmed for Smash 5?

I'm honestly surprised a certain whale Pokémon didn't become a stage.
Pokemon Stadium 3 you can bet your patooty that there'll be an arena within a Wailord as a selectable stage.

They have so much potential for pokemon arenas now. SOOO MUCH

That is great news! I was going to draw the line at buying a $40 3DS game just to play as one character in the Wii U version.... and the alternative had better not be the Mewtwo Amiibo, I don't need those things either :P

Ridley is a septic tank of worms that people will open at every given opportunity.

To be fair, it was Sakurai himself that opened it this time around.

To be fair, it was Sakurai himself that opened it this time around.
As far as I can tell, he was trying to close it permanently by saying he will not be a playable character outright. No weasel words or cleverly evading a direct answer this time. He straight up closed the lid but people just can't let go.

He said the same thing about an Animal Crossing rep about the same time when Brawl came out.

He said it didn't feel like a good fit because he wasn't a fighter. With Ridley, he said this is where he belongs.

Which is another way of saying it didn't feel like a good fit because he wasn't a ground-based fighter.

In your eyes, that's what it looked like. But he quite literally put a lid on Ridley. No dancing with words this time.

Sakurai saying "I don't think we could make Ridley a fighter while keeping his essence" is about as concrete as "We didn't want to make an Animal Crossing character because he's just not suited for battle".

Which is another way of saying it didn't feel like a good fit because he wasn't a ground-based fighter.

What Sakurai said was pretty clearly "as long as I'm in charge Ridley will be no more than a boss character, where he belongs."

If Sakurai isn't involved in the next Smash game, things might be different, but until another director steps up to the plate, expecting anything more for Ridley is just fooling yourself.

Which is entirely bullshit, but it still doesn't explain why everyone else is so goddamn adamant about him not being playable.

Let's get rid of Sakurai. His time has clearly passed,

"Pic of the day. You'll need to link the 3DS version to the Wii U version to get them to work together. Luckily, this is easy. On the 3DS version, you simply select the Wii U option, and select the 3DS option on the Wii U version."

Sakurai deserves a vacation from everything after five Smash Games and Kid Icarus.
Give him a trip to the Bahamas and let Harada handle Smash Bros or something.

But I want a KIU2.

Why are you so adamant about him being playable? It goes the same both ways with the main point being that Ridley won't be playable.

Because he's the central antagonist in one of Nintendo's larger game series, one that has gone very unrepresented within it's largest crossover game, and every reason I've ever heard for him not to be playable either uses faulty logic or is actually contradictory to the information that we know.

It'd be like in Melee if Legend of Zelda didn't get any new reps it was still just Link.
And then in Brawl they added Young Link with a Majora's Mask moveset or something.
And then by the fifth installment with only two characters that are the same character the Legend of Zelda fans would be like, okay that's cool but can we have Ganondorf or someone? And everyone else is like Why the fuck would you want Ganondorf, Zelda already has enough reps as is, his entire deal is that he's super powerful that only a specific type of godly magic can defeat him, he'd just float around everywhere it'd be so OP, omg Ganon fans are so annoying.

It'd be like that.

Just some quotes from Sakurai in that interview about Ridley:
"I definitely know that Ridley’s a much-anticipated name for fans, but if we made Ridley as a fighter, it wouldn’t be Ridley any longer"

"Instead of going through a lot of very convoluted hocus-pocus to make Ridley a fighter, I figured it’d be better to keep Ridley as it currently is, the correct way, and have it feel like a truly threatening presence"

"Providing accurate portrayals of characters is something I want to pay ample attention to. If I don’t stick to that thought, then we’d have to lower the quality or break the balance of the game"

Important points are emphasized. The Ridley you want is not actually Ridley.

A few points:
The fact that you even compare Ridley to Gannon is just funny, but also not applicable because Gannon is a character.
I've never heard anyone claim that Metroid has enough reps.
If Ridley was official, I don't think that he would be overpowered, just not very fun.

Alright, let's take this through step by step.

Just some quotes from Sakurai in that interview about Ridley:
"I definitely know that Ridley’s a much-anticipated name for fans, but if we made Ridley as a fighter, it wouldn’t be Ridley any longer"

Sakurai ignoring the fact that Ganondorf doesn't just punch things, Little Mac beats his enemies through a constant barrage of small hits instead of giant, devastating ones, Samus has never used a whip, plasma or no, and Captain Falcon is nowhere near as show-offy or boisterous as he's presented in Smash.
Sakurai has never been one for faithful adaptation.

"Instead of going through a lot of very convoluted hocus-pocus to make Ridley a fighter, I figured it’d be better to keep Ridley as it currently is, the correct way, and have it feel like a truly threatening presence"

Armored rushdown with high aerial mobility (not necessarily the best way to go about it, but if you want him to be threatening it's the way to go) is very scary, I don't know what you're on about.
You can keep a threatening presence while being only 10 ft. tall, give him vicious attack styles, have his neutral stance be threatening, there are ways to do this.

"Providing accurate portrayals of characters is something I want to pay ample attention to. If I don’t stick to that thought, then we’d have to lower the quality or break the balance of the game"

See again the first point.
Furthermore if it's size and viciousness you want, then do it, amp up the size, push the boundaries.
Have him hunched over, get him to walk on all fours.
Or have a giant hitbox compensate for high mobility, range, and attack power.
There are ways to do this, don't just sit there and shrug at me for suggesting them.

Important points are emphasized. The Ridley you want is not actually Ridley.

How?
What about anything I have said goes against what Ridley is?

The fact that you even compare Ridley to Gannon is just funny, but also not applicable because Gannon is a character.

Technically speaking, so is Ridley.
In terms of characterization, characterization is not a mandate for playability.
Stop with that.

I've never heard anyone claim that Metroid has enough reps.

I have.

If Ridley was official, I don't think that he would be overpowered, just not very fun.

Then I wasn't talking about you.
I was talking about everyone else I've spoken to about or have seen speak about this.

I'm saying that the Ridley you want is not the Ridley that is in Metroid. You're technically quoting sakurai with the rest of that so you should probably go take that up with him. Though I'm sure he'll just tell you the same thing: It's not happening.

In order to put Ridley in as a playable character, he needs to destroy everything that is Ridley. If you bitch now about how he's not in, you'll bitch more when he ends up royally SUCKING as a character.

No,
Ridley's key characteristic has always been that he's a giant purple space pterodactyl dragon, in order to make him playable all that'd need to be done is change giant to abnormally large, which doesn't destroy everything about Ridley, just a single facet that isn't kept consistent in Smash Bros. anyways.
If keeping a character's size is so damn important, why isn't Olimar the size of an ant? Why isn't Pikachu only a foot tall? Why is the Villager as tall as Little Mac? Why is Rosalina taller than Bowser?

And yes, thank you, I realize you were using the statements that Sakurai made,
but you were also using the statements to support the claim that Ridley wouldn't work as a character and I can deconstruct the logic of the statements within that context.
And also, the statements themselves are contradictory to what he's already put in the game and kinda stupid.

Even if they were to somehow destroy everything that was Ridley by making him playable, I wouldn't care.
Hell, they took Little Mac, my number 1 newcomer pick, who was a lightweight underdog who wins through determination and perserverance and turned him into a powerhouse that became the single most overplayed character in the roster, the one everyone expects to win.
And I fucking love that he's in the game, I think he's a really cool character and he's my main.

Day 3 of The Ridley Wars

Food goes scarce as both sides hoard it for their own troops

We who do not pick a side are stuck in the crossfire

There has been many casualties, but this war will end one day... right?

As for now, the best thing to do is hide.

Hide and pray.
