Unpopular gaming opinions

Awesomenauts? Smite? (Smite isn't tab targetting, is it? It's in 3rd person...)
Yes, less wc3 mod controls and more like those please.

I would probably also Land of Chaos Online to that. IIRC they were fixing that stupid update that ruined the game way back. Air Mech is amazing too.

Control is far more important that any other aspect of a game. It doesn't matter how good the gameplay, story, graphics, music, etc is, if it controls terribly it's failed.

Also there needs to be more games that just let you have fun, like the Kirby games.

For gameplay, yeah. I could honestly see myself playing a shitty game if I liked the story and atmosphere enough.

Well, I played a kind of poorly executed game for the story once.

Yes, though keep in mind that everyone has fun in their own way.

fun is overrated
play for pain
play for the rush that you get from slamming your fist through a window in anger and getting a deep gash on your arm
play for the pain of losing everything after you forget to save after 20 hours of playing
play for the pain of losing everyone around you as you increasingly close yourself off from the outside world and reality, living only in your empty fantasy

Does LOCO still have players? I loved some of the character designs and would be interested in getting into it, but I was half convinced it was dying.

I try to seek out excitement.

I'm not sure. I heard a few monthes back that a new studio bought it and was reversing the changes made in the much abhorred "Evolution" update that everyone hated and killed the game for most people. however I haven't checked in on it since so who knows.

That's a good point. I just feel like some games went out of their way to force something onto you, like Borderlands 2 UVHM, and Dark Souls in general.

To me, the beauty of the Souls series is that it brings the feel and play style of an intense arcade style game into a full length rpg adventure while making it feel completely natural and intuitive. I definitely don't think it's forcing anything.

the mind of a masochist is quite different than those who equate pain with negativity

i kinda felt that on tf2 i was a little harsh on it, what i mean to say that the gameplay is not bad at all, its fun and fast paced, its just the community is a shitfest to me. my opinion on CS still remains though.

I played 6v6, so I never had to deal with the shitty pub communities.

Honestly, I have no idea where you get the "tf2 is the worst online community" thing from.
I mean, I'm not going to tell you it's great, but it can get so, so, so, SO much worse...

Exactly as Squire Grooktook has said.

I'm an offensive Heavy player, so I'm always trying to get an attack together to take damage for the team. Sometimes it works, sometimes I break the enemies back alone and have no one to follow me and get stuff done when I die.

Such is the way of the Heavy.

Was Psychonauts that bad? I was actually thinking of Odin Sphere. Not terrible, but so much potential and such a cool concept ruined by half assed and lazy execution. If you actually play it through it really does have it's fun moments, but it's still way too repetitive for most people. Story and atmosphere was still awesome though, and doing low level challenges actually takes my mind off the repetitiveness and makes the gameplay really exciting at times..

I guess I could say the same thing of Phantasy Star Online 1 as well. The art and atmosphere is still incredible to this day, but the combat has not aged well at all IMO.

im just speaking from my experiences thats all. im not saying all of the community is bad and its one the worst, not THE worst. i should of said earlier. but when i was playing, i was consistently being harassed by others on every server, which to be honest didnt bother me, but i eventually got tired and irritated to the point i uninstalled the game. i still play CS from time to time but only in small increments, TF2 i have not played in years. besides, the source community for the most part needs some clean up. but hey idk, maybe its changed.

That sounds like the experience of playing nearly any doublefine game. Although it usually doesn't come off as half assed, just very flawed.

I've got like 300 hours in it (often on pubs) and I can count the amount of times I was actually harassed on one hand. I'm not going to tell you it's a fantastic community, but I wouldn't even put it close to my top 5 worst communities. ESPECIALLY if we aren't talking just video games.

Agreed with those saying TF2 isn't a terrible community. I think in regards to FPS communities it is actually one of the best.

That said, the times it sucks is memorable, but I think they are relatively rare. It also helps that you can favorite the servers you'd like to play on and it keeps out the riff-raff.

the TF2 community ain't so bad. The problem is that there's like 10% of the community who are everywhere and extremely offensive and obnoxious to anyone who doesn't meet their standards.

Fighting games are the only video game genre truly worth investing in because of a heap of side benefits you get outside of just playing them, like discipline, friends, community, and travel.

Other competitive genres ain't got shit(except money lol) on fighting games either, since they promote basement-dwelling as the prime method of competition, and in my experience RTS/FPS/MOBA tournaments are far less social, and much more hostile than fighting game tournaments.

Other genres are just for casual fun.

Alrighty, here we go...

`I firmly stand by my belief that Skyrim was the most boring game I've ever played, and that it deserved none of the praise it got.
`Any game on a console that doesn't run at a stable framerate, whether it's 60 or 30 FPS, deserves to be criticized for it.
`PC games would likely benefit from seventh generation consoles not being supported anymore.
`Phil Fish's only problem was that he ran his mouth too much, and I sincerely wish FEZ II was still being developed.
Phew.

This is hugely important. I think having split communities (to include xplatform play) is awful for the entire gaming community.

It hurts smaller games like Skullgirls (as a PC only player, the PC community has (or seems to have) dwindled significantly since the patch launched on the PS3).

It splits up the competitive community.

It creates unnecessary factions.

It is bad all around.

I fucking hate console exclusives. I wouldn't play Infamous if I had a ps4. I would love to join the FG community (especially BB and GG), but I likely won't since I can't justify spending half a grand to play 3 games.

I was more thinking about how games having to be made for eight year old hardware holds back PC games, but your ideas work too.

I love when a new console comes out and Microsoft and Sony start up with the "graphics better than PC" nonsense...

Here's a funny article you might enjoy. For FPS, keyboard crushes controller (which actually might be an impediment to xPlatform play).

I have to disagree.

Ultimately if you want to be social about something it's completely on you. In fighters you could easily be a basement dweller online warrior, go to in person tournaments and make a name for yourself, but than never talk to anyone there and just go back to basement dwelling when you get home. On the other side of the coin, if you have the initiative you can pretty much form a community for anything you want, and be social about that.

I mean hell, how social the speed run community is at live events really blows my mind at times.

Not to mention this post assumes you don't already have friends and community outside your game of choice taking up your time, in which case it's not really a "benefit" since you have it already.

Also judging the games as being "worth time" based on something that's not actually a part of the game (community).

Furthermore "worth investing time in" and "casual fun" are completely subjective. Some people don't like competition at all. And some people don't care about being social and prefer games as a time of solitude and relaxation. And some people are very invested in things that are not skill based aka "casual".

Other competitive genres ain't got shit(except money lol) on fighting games either, since they promote basement-dwelling as the prime method of competition, and in my experience RTS/FPS/MOBA tournaments are far less social, and much more hostile than fighting game tournaments.

Don't really see how they "promote" basement dwelling. Starcraft and Quake lan parties have been a thing since forever. Also your experience is just that: Your singular experience of a few tournaments in a genre that spans a massive number of games and communities world wide.

discipline

Anything competitive demands this. Fighting games didn't invent discipline, nor are they they only form of electronic entertainment that demands it to defeat other disciplined players.

On a side note, I'd really like to hear you say that Starcraft is just casual fun in front of one of those Korean tourney pro's lol.

Also not electronic but Chess is totally for casuals.

There is a grain of truth in what you're saying, fighting games are probably one of the better if not the best games for a social environment, but to act like other games are incapable of having a social aspect or are not worth spending time on due to being less social is not something I can agree with.

`Phil Fish's only problem was that he ran his mouth too much, and I sincerely wish FEZ II was still being developed.
Phew.
The way I heard it, Phil Fish's problem was that he basically wasn't the guy who made Fez, or at least didn't do the majority of the work. His partner (who he fired after Fez was finished) basically did all the hard stuff, and without him Phil was in over his head and was basically just looking for an excuse to cancel Fez II.

At least that's how it was explained to me. Seems reasonable since I have a hard time believing that man is even semi competent at game design or programming.

I liked Spore even though it was extremely dumbed down (Go look up one of the early e3 trailers and compare it to now). There was alot of cut features that I wish had made it into the game like the Aquatic Stage but I was overall happy with what actually made it into the game.

Lumines is the best puzzle game of all time...

I'll make it quick and painless.

- If it's about zombies, then you've already lost me. They're overused and mostly just end up being and excuse for lazy writing. You don't need zombies or the apocalypses to make hard choices, you just need good characters and stories.

-I do not like Mortal Kombat. It's animation is awkward, it's characters are boring, the gore is just a gimmick to get attention, and Fatalities have noting to do with the fighting. Every time I hear people talk about this series it's always about the Fatalities. When people talk more about your win poses then the fighting in your fighting game, then you've done something wrong.

-Bioshock Infinite is one of the most inconstant games I have played. It's the gaming equivalent to Oscar bait. There are a lot of signs of laziness by the developers throughout the game. When an independently made dating sim can have more emotional depth and complexity then a AAA multimillion game, then some focus was lost at one point.

Games I like that everyone else dis-the-likes:
PlayStation All-Stars
Wind Waker
Street Fighter X Tekken
Fighters in general (It's only when MK is brought that I see a reaction, then it turns back to Fatality swooning)
Sonic Unleashed
Metal Gear Rising (Yet to have met someone in person that has liked it.)
Elite Beat Agents (This is a sin I tell you!)
