would it actually have to be 3d rendered or just drawn?

Well... we're talking hypotheticals here, not an actual contest that already exists.

Although, someone is going to have to make the 3D model in the end either way.

The only reason I would not be too interested in running a 3D modeling contest is that simply there are very few 3D modelers. There's a far larger pool of artists who are capable of drawing a 2D image like in this contest. I doubt there's more than a handful of sculptors here and even then only a fraction of them would enter a contest.
Even in this costume design contest, if I hadn't provided bases I imagine we would have gotten far less entries.

Aw come on Cellsai. Just Think about it. a figma of Eliza where you can take off her skin so you can see Sehkmet underneath, plus you can dress her up in different costumes. How cool would that be? Also just curios but who makes those models of Val.?

Yeah, it's cool and obviously I'd be dying to have one for myself, but realistically speaking, who on Skullheart can make that? And who is going to put in the time to do it? A costume design takes a few hours, maybe a day or two depending on how fast you can work. A full 3D model? That's a significant increase in work load. Days to weeks minimum in most cases. I know I'm sure as hell not entering a contest like that, even if I wasn't the one organizing it.
There's a reason these statues are so rare and awkward to find: they take a huge amount of effort to make that is generally outside the scope of a small gaming forum's ability.

H-unit is the circle that made the Val and Squigly figures (linked in the OP :P). I am currently chomping at the bit for the next figure in the Squigly creator's repertoire:

It's been in production for several months now though so I don't know when it'll ever see the light of day. http://www.fg-site.net/archives/3162288

*licks lips* Thanks Cellsai for your concern and for the link, I may not be a master at 3d modeling on a computer but I think I have the chops to do something like this. I'm going to see if this can happen.

I'm not saying you don't, but I'm saying running a contest with a population of this forum's size is unfeasible. A contest like this would be totally fine on a 3D modeling heavy forum, but this is supposedly primarily a gaming forum. At most two thirds to a half the population is artistically inclined and of that a tiny fraction has the slightest idea about 3D modeling.

If I had the impression that there was a large population of modelers here I'd 100% be considering a contest aimed at them, but I don't think I've seen even a single computer generated 3D model posted in the art forum.

(Also, a figma with Eliza's proportions that you could detach her skin from to see Sekhmet? Not happening :P Due to artistic license Sekhmet doesn't actually entirely fit inside Eliza. She has bigger hands than Eliza for one. Even if they were exactly the same shape, the thickness of the plastic would require Eliza to be super chubby to cover over Sekh's bones.)

This are amazing! Now you should all do something Beowulf related lol or Robo!

Well... If there ever happens a 3D contest I would be in for SURE.
I mean... I've been planning to do a skullgirls related piece for a while now, so it will happen regardless of a contest coming in.

By the way, can other modellers/texturers/lighting or even rigging artists in here raise their hands up? A collab would be sweet :)

I keep eyeballing the fuck out of the character model sheets and going "I'll do it eventually"
but yeah this stuff takes a very long time and I just started a new semester at college. I'd love to enter something like that because I dabble in 3D, but... I probably wouldn't finish lol

How about drawing the 'project' of the model? Aka different angles in which the model would be seen, like in this ref sheet

You give a number of necessary views(front, 3/4,back, back 3/4, profile) and who wants can add more views or details. Winner gets his model rendered in 3d by a commissioned 3d artist.

HYYYYYYPPPPPPPEEEEEE!!!!!!!

Okay. That would be good.

Hey you never know.:) Look at it like you actually went ahead TO enter a contest.:)
