– Even though it looks like a water creature, it doesn’t appear only underwater
– It may require a different battle strategy depending on whether the battle takes place underwater or on land
– It is said to exist in order to remind of origins for people who are separated from Mother Sea and live on land

Story characters

Luka

– This elusive free journalist returns from the first game
– Appears suddenly at unexpected places
– This time wears eyeglasses
– Has a passion for finding the truth and for this reasons has traveled around the world

– Has guts to use his grappling hook to infiltrate places and to get his scoop

Weapons

Undine

– The spirit of Undine is sealed inside this magical weapon
– Torn by love, Undine had thrown herself into Cocytus
– With Undine’s burning jealousy, the weapon can unleash flames on enemies
– Fire attacks may cause burn effect (continuous damage) on an enemy
– Enemies affected with her lamentation may get frozen solid
– Players can attack frozen enemies freely for a limited time
– Small frozen enemies can also be thrown at other enemies
– It is possible to change between fire and ice element
– With Undine, it is possible to summon Hydra from the underworld

Chernabog

– This magical weapon is the sickle of Chernabog who is a god of death dwelling deep in Hell
– The sickle has sealed many souls of demons within
– Rodin managed to seal the ultimate soul within it and restored the weapon to its former glory
– If one gets hit with Chernabog’s three blades, the darkness will corrupt the victim from the wound and curse the soul to Hell
– While Chernabog is slow, it is powerful and has long reach so it can hit multiple enemies at once
– By pressing the punch button, players can fire the 3 blades away to attack enemies at a distance or to deal great damage to a close enemy
– When wielding Chernabog and triggering Umbran Climax, Bayonetta can summon Mictlantecuhtli (giant bat from the underworld)
– Mictlantecuhtli uses its huge wings to attack enemies with shock waves

Other

– The first Bayonetta supports gyro controls in certain situations (motorbike stage in the picture)
– It is said to be easy to switch between gyro and normal control during play so players may try out which suits them

Fuck Enzo's presents

PlatinumGames has posted a new Bayonetta 2 blog post covering the game’s enemy designs in more details.

Hideous

Its appearance evokes a feeling of “hatred given form”. I designed it as a beast that prowls around Inferno, looking for prey. Unlike its angelic counterpart Acceptance (centaur), I feel like the design for this one came together (relatively) quickly.

Fury

It can slow your movement by shooting you with magic energy shot from its eye. The key concept for its design was “paralyzing gaze”. I gave its attack easy to understand ON / OFF states by having it open up to reveal the eye.

Pain

This character is about the same level of the angel Beloved in terms of strength. My goal for the design was to add something fresh to the battles by going as far from a regular humanoid shape as possible. I also just thought it would be cool to have an enemy that transformed from a tombstone. I love the unique way the animation staff got him to move. He is quite a formidable foe.

Let’s take a look at slightly different kind of enemy:

Golem

I’m sure this name will sound familiar to fans of the first game. Neither angel nor demon, this enemy can change its shape to adapt to battle.

Now I would like to introduce some of the demons that have forged contracts with Bayonetta.

Let’s start with one of the most iconic Infernal Demons from the first game:

Gomorrah

Expanding on the design from the first game, this time we show its whole body.

Thanks to the incredible work of the modeling artists, Gomorrah was able to make the change from ally to terrifying giant boss character.

Next we have a demonic dog who has stolen Gomorrah’s place!

Labolas

It’s born with faces on both hands and feet. As I designed it, I imagined how they would fight over food…

Next is a horse demon with a giant blade attached to its head!

Diomedes

In addition to this guy, there are a variety of other demons that make their first appearance in Bayonetta 2. Of course, you can’t discuss demons without also mentioning the new “Umbran Climax” system. When using Umbran Climax, the demon that is summoned with each attack depends on the weapon you have equipped. Equip your favorite weapon and give it a try. Exactly how will each demon appear? You’ll just have to play and find out!

By the way, one of the demons was actually designed by a very special guest collaborator named Eiichi Shimizu. Some of you may know him from his artwork in the manga series Kurogane no Linebarrels and ULTRAMAN. The enemy he designed is visible in the E3 2014 Trailer (see 0:50)

Guys, I need help ;x; I'm missing one Broken Witch Heart. I mean, just in the story. I haven't bought any of the full hearts at the shop, and I haven't done any of the Alfheims yet. I'm talking just the Broken Witch Hearts in the normal chapters... I have 3/4 on my last Heart... Help ;x; (I swear I've gotten every single one AND double checked)

Wait wait wait
Are there an odd number of Broken Witch Hearts in the chapters alone? Is that why I have 3/4 after getting them all? I'm gonna feel so dumb if I do all the Alfheim's and end up getting all the hearts...

The weapons for the Star Fox costume are pretty cute.

P* confirmed unable to keep it in their pants. 06:50 for possible heavy (Un)masked Lumen spoilers. Food for wild speculation, at least.

I'm inclined to say Yu-gi-Oh McCornrows and Lampshade Dress are related, if not the same person. Same skin tone. Same hair color. Same horrible taste in clothing.

As for the Masked Lumen, I guess the simplest way to put the current theories is that he's the Cereza of Bayonetta 2.

Please don't canonize Bloody Mess... -_-"

Robot Demons and Lovecraft Angels. Your expectations splattered all over the walls once again.

So, uh...anyone know any moonspeak?

Oh oh for those who watched the "The Time Has Come" Trailer

So Bayonetta says "I know where this is, I know WHEN this is"
So like does this mean she goes back in the past (note the old looking Umbran Witch)
This could also mean we officially meet her mother
Oh and also young @Balder
That would be soooooo cooooool

Oh oh for those who watched the "The Time Has Come" Trailer
....that was over a week ago. :|
I won't judge. In fact, I too am habitually late when it comes to watching trailers and whatnot. I think the only reason I'm following this so attentively it's because there's nothing else keeping me interested. Xrd just keeps getting worse every update... >_>

Seems a given that there will be a "travel to the past" segment set during the Umbra-Lumen war. Flow of time and all that jazz seems to be a main theme and Loki and the Overseer both seem closely tied to that. Loki seems to come to the realization he did something heinous (and I'm not just talking about his wardrobe) and whatever it was, is the reason why the Masked Lumen wants his head.
As for Rosa, I do believe it's been confirmed that the player fights alongside her during that part, in a manner similar to the prologue of the first game. I'd say count on her being selectable for multiplayer.
The latest development seems to give away the Masked Lumen's identity but I would say that's what they want people to think. It would also be in blatant contradiction to the plot of Bayonetta 1. Nonetheless, retconing IS a thing. I'm kinda hoping they don't go that way. Besides being predictable and cliché, I'm personally tired of this latest "trend" in sequels and expansions to "reform" or "redeem" the antagonist. And, of course, the voice actors don't match, both ENG and JP.
All that said, don't be surprised if yours truly is the boss fight for the Umbra-Lumen war chapter. :3

Bayonetta 2 - First Print Edition (Wii U)

I want this really badly.

More character art from Mari Shimazaki.

Hello. This is the character designer for Bayonetta 2, Mari Shimazaki.

We’re one day away from the game’s Japanese release! Today I thought I’d talk about some of the male character designs I did for the game.

Luka

Here’s a character anyone who played the first game isn’t likely to forget: Luka. Kamiya, the game’s supervisor, asked for Luka’s new design to show that he’s overcome his troubled past from the original Bayonetta, and grown into more of a man.

This ended up being a tougher request than I imagined. I think I was just so used to Luka being a showoff bozo that at first I was taking things in completely the wrong direction.

In the previous game, he was supposed to be a fledgling journalist, but the designs I made this time had him looking like a war correspondent, or the main character from Robert Rodriguez’s El Mariachi… I couldn’t peg what “grown into more of a man” meant. I knew I had to make Luka somewhat flaunty, but if I took it too far, he wouldn’t fit with the overall design motif of the sequel. I decided to show the player just a hint of the old Luka flair with the hat he wears during his entrance.

In the design I settled on, I think I was able to give Luka some semblance to the young days of his father, Antonio Redgrave. But regardless of how I changed his design, it looks like Bayonetta still treats him more or less the same. I think you can anticipate more of the same classic slapstick in Bayonetta 2.

Rodin

Rodin was one of the easier characters to figure out.

They didn’t give me any specific direction, so I started trying him out in both traditional Japanese outfits and regular clothes. I learned that Japanese clothes look really good on Rodin and, judging by how fast the designs got approved, I know the team thought the same.

If you’re going to be an arms dealer, I think this is the right look.

Most likely he stopped by Japan to procure some merchandise, and picked out a few outfits on the way, right? (Which probably means he’s gotten his hands on something again, like he did with the PE uniform in the first game.)

I gave his glasses some traditional Japanese craftwork to go along with his outfit. I feel like the Bayonetta team not only puts up with this level of detail, but expects it. This is one reason why I’m grateful to work with them (of course, it’s not like they let me get carried away with everything.)

Enzo

Just like in the first Bayonetta, we settled on Enzo’s design faster than any other character. Maybe it’s just because his character is so easily understandable, or maybe it’s because his shape makes it so easy to tell what works with him and what doesn’t. The concept for his character is “wannabe Italian gangster”. I like to imagine that he finally saved up enough to buy one nice suit, just to get a bit closer to his dream.

A major change Enzo made from the last game is his color scheme. His key color last time was green, whereas this time it’s dark red. I like to come up with a key color when I design a character (Bayonetta is black, Jeanne is red, Luka is blue, etc.), and once I decide a color I typically don’t drift too far from it. Only, in Enzo’s case, that would mean changing barely anything about him, save the style of his clothes. I didn’t want that, so I took the leap and made him dark red. Well, Enzo’s humpty dumpty figure and sunglasses probably leave a stronger impression than his clothes do anyway. I left his necktie green to display my slight unwillingness to let go of the past.

Right before Bayonetta hits stores in Japan, let’s share this one last picture.

*POTENTIAL ROSA MAY BE INTENSIFYING*

Rosa is Bayo's mom for those who don't know

I never knew her name was Rosa. How did you find that out? Was it mentioned in the first game? I don't remember hearing it.

Some people found the name on the lipstick that Bayo shot at Balder last game when they dug through the texture files. Seems to have been a wedding gift.

OHHHHHH. Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh ohhh. Yeah I remember that. :T I was getting all super duper excited for nothing.

Practically confirmed for multiplayer.

[POSSIBLE ROSA INTENSIFICATION INTENSFIES]

Wondering what the story is with this diamond-looking guy here

I can't tell if Masked Witch/possibly!Rosa is fighting with or against Bayo in that shot.

I can't tell if Masked Witch/possibly!Rosa is fighting with or against Bayo in that shot.

Well up there in the top right picture, they are aiming their guns in the same direction looks like
Plus there's a little enemy life meter there in the bottom right so something kinda major is being fought
But then again looking above Rosa's head you can see something resembling a Paradiso halo
If you think about the "Joy" angels from Bayo 1 that could explain that and the Joy dance battle could return except a Joy is imitating her mother instead of her

Either way we get to see the woman that birthed Bayo fight it seems
Reminds me of

Wouldn't be surprised if he ends up as a final unlockable character.

guess who's the best dad ever and REAL hero of this epoch? :3

Kinda cliché. Jokes aside, can't say I'm fond of the direction they took. Getting tired of this trend of removing agency from the antagonist (Wesker, Adachi, etc.). At least P* always knows how to make stuff entertaining (even if remarkably predictable) and, ultimately, I guess that's what matters.

Spoil yourselves rotten.
