Well I'm glad they at least had the sense to cancel it instead of wasting all that money and driving themselves into the poor house...anyone with any common sense could have told you the project was doomed in one way or another.

Adding this tweet thread.

With the fact that people weren't paid, it does make me wonder if any of the money was kept. I sort of doubt it since very little was raised, and that WAS probably spent, but since there's no way to know...

huh. Wonder why they haven't posted anything on their official social media. Pride maybe?
Last thing on their fb is a Dec 18th, 2015 post thanking some youtube guys for checking out their game.

This should not be taken as a victory, but as a tragedy. Like watching a movie about the Titanic, the ship has sunk and th funds and hopes of money were lost.

Let us not forget the people who worked hard during the 5 years to try to keep the dream alive, and that every person who wants to get into game design learns a lesson from Beast's Fury's Mistakes.

I find it rather disgusting how much of this announcement is trying to place the blame on critics of the project. It is bad enough that there are no details on what went wrong with the project (for backers who have not been following the project as closely), but to try to scapegoat others is petty and selfish.

I'd say it's more like watching the Death Star blow up. Yeah, it was the remarkable product of some talented engineers and a dedicated crew, but given the kind of people that were in control of the thing, the galaxy was really better off without it.

But I agree that this is still a loss, and it's a shame this didn't happen before so much work was put into the Pre-Alpha. Hopefully the artists are able to take something away from this experience as they move on to other projects.

i'm just pissed that people working on that game didn't get fucking paid.

"Oh- you were off the team like a year ago. I thought we told you." Yeah fucking right.

there is being an asshole to people and then there is being a fucking evil asshole. (would really like to replace that last asshole with something else but I'll hold my tongue)

Come to think of it, Danielle McRae was supposed to be the Voice Director for the project. Hope she was treated fairly.
I'm willing to bet that Danielle's role in the game's development was much like Maximilian or Arin's: contingent upon successful acquisition of actual funding to make the game. I don't think there was much time to even be jerked around, they never even recorded any serious VO for the game, right? Just stand-in stuff.

Agreed. Failing like it did reinforces the lesson you're supposed to be taking away from all of this.

and we actually have refunded some people and we are doing so when we are able to do so )

"When we are able to do so"? Some people paid THOUSANDS of dollars. Man, if that were the response I got I'd just ask Paypal for a chargeback. Disgusting stuff.

I am sad that the artists didn't get paid, but happy about them no longer have to deal with the workload, among the other things.

The only good thing that came out of this is that people who did do the work like the artists did make connections with others so here's hoping they can find better jobs at better companies.

We have fulfilled both campaigns requirements and delivered the playable demo with 2 finished characters. and all the games mechanics and also sent out all the the campaigns physical rewards
Wow, is ANY of this true? I never bothered with the later Pre-Alphas myself, but last I saw on video, some of Don's frames needed work, there were still bugs with a lot of moves, and they never even fully implemented those Cinematic Finishers (I guess now they're willing to admit that those weren't crucial to the game, huh).

They had some pricey physical rewards in their campaigns too, like statues, oil paintings, plushies, and fight sticks. Never saw any pics of people receiving this stuff. There are definitely a ton of digital rewards, outside of the game, that won't be fulfilled either. At this point though, I wouldn't want Lorddirk or any of the VA's to feel committed to those anyway.

Sheesh, what a mess.

Now I'm wondering if this is better or worse than the Blood Cargo fiasco. BC was a straight up scam, but Beast's Fury was something that always seemed to have just enough content to keep the dream floating on until it finally sunk.

You mean Death Cargo? That entire situation had its own bullshit but here's the key difference:

Death Cargo actually *came out*. It's fuckin' terrible and the devs act terrible but it still came out.

Reading some of his past days' tweets about his work and his boss' decisions is nightmarish. Really, I got scared and cringy reading that stuff. Good thing it's over and I didn't put one single cent in it nor cared about it.

I know it sounds harsh said like that but A 3D MODEL FOR THE SEQUEL?!?

actually in the lastest with build cinematic finishers there was a little bar that showed up in fury mode and once it filled up after like 6-8 hits or something the finisher would trigger. it was bad either way.

I'm just not sure how people ever thought this would happen successfully. It failed so many times, over and over, and just threw random gimmicks (guest stars, etc) on top of things to keep fans excited. It was just so disorganized. Game dev doesn't have miracles, folks.

The closet game development gets to miracles is Lab zero. but the thing with Lab zero is they knew how to manage well with what they had, this game didn't. Such as cinematic finishers? are those really needed for fighting games? I often see them as a bad idea to instant kill your opponent in a fighting game. And in other games they're almost never used competitively.

Only miracles here are ppl actually give money to crowdfunds.

I washed my hands of this after one (I think the second?) crowdfunding campaign had getting Danielle to voice the second character hit that goal, but then they did another campaign where suddenly that character was like 5th in line. I couldn't afford to donate originally and feel like I dodged a bullet.

My schadenfreude level is high at the moment.

As Mike said long time ago, Lab0 too made budget mistakes in its first steps(like the two big Peacock supers gone unused because too big for console memory); the difference is, they learned from it.

oh yeah I remember the train...

sigh........

Well, Yacht Club admitted that what they asked didn't turn out to be enough for Shovel Knight. So these aren't miracles, these are people who are able to recover from problems. Which is pretty much a skill you need to have from the get go or be able to learn it REALLY REALLY quick.

Yeah making mistakes isn't wrong at all everyone does it but like you said Lab zero realize it screwed up with those animations funding wise and learned from it. Unlike lab zero beast fury overfunded its budget and had to scrap animations like full idle ones but instead they decided to piss more money away instead of working with what they had left.

It also helps when the people making big decisions on small teams, like Yacht Club, are actual artists and programmers with a strong drive to see the project succeed. Everybody at Lab Zero (/Reverge) had to be ready to put in those crunch hours for SG when they were needed. If any of them had tried to sit back and be the "idea guy," or just bark orders without grinding out work, then SG would have been dead long before Filia was done.

I think in one of our threads (or elsewhere, I don't remember) the dev was mentioning having animators who were willing to volunteer and work for free. I remember laughing at the notion. Umm... was he talking about the people he wasn't paying...?

Yeah, it's when people try and say the exposure you get is better than being paid.

There was also the other guy that posted a series of tweets. His aren't all neat, but going through his timeline they're still there. Here's a few key tweets. Spoilering them for space.

I'm sorry to say this, but to be honest, the little gameplay I actually did see made the gameplay look, well... Shit. Maybe that was just me though.

There it is.

Also, this unrelated but interesting post, given the lack of paying animators that's come to light. TLDR: Animation apparently took the bulk of their money. They say it several times, but this was just one example post.

I sat on the fringe of this whole thing but why did this group have a FurAffinity account to begin with? Were they dredging up art talent from that site or something?
