Beast's Fury is now cancel

I sat on the fringe of this whole thing but why did this group have a FurAffinity account to begin with? Were they dredging up art talent from that site or something?

Its a Furry fighting game. It only makes sense to set up shop in one of the most active furry bases on the interwebs.

Now whether they were trying to snatch up over zealous artists to help support the game is a completely different story, but I wouldn't say its beneath them.

This is probably one of those things that will get turned up into a cautionary tale for kickstarters and unorganised people. "Oh you want to concentrate on animation rather than on gameplay? Beast's Fury did that and a bunch of other shit"

There was also the other guy that posted a series of tweets. His aren't all neat, but going through his timeline they're still there.
Sean Chiplock did voice acting for the new KI, Freedom Planet, SAO, and worked on a bunch of other projects with VAs we know from Skullgirls and elsewhere. So yeah, between his and Danielle's reactions to the news, it's safe to assume that a lot of bridges are being burned right now. It'll probably be a very long time before Ryhan Stevens can ever dream of hiring another professionally trained VA for one of his projects again.

I'll remember Beast's Fury as a prime example of what not to do when developing a crowdfunded video game.

Lessons to learn for whenever I get off my lazy, self-deprecating bum and start making a vidya gaem.

The best thing that this project can end with is a lesson for those who backed them and those who supported their project.

People should learn a thing or two from Lab 0

I can't believe this. This guy is still trying to save face. You've been caught man. admit that you didn't know what the heck you were doing, that you ignored helpful advice that mind you, you asked for, and admit that there people who worked for the Beast Fury development where they have not been paid yet.

While this still isn't okay, if this had been the very first statement made to announce the cancellation of the game, I would feel significantly less disgusted by the whole ordeal.

Valuable information on the situation is finally being given, he is openly accepting that he underestimated the costs and had never made a game before this one (thereby taking the blame for this outcome), is acknowledging that there are still people that need to get paid, and is even linking to the pages of people who worked on the project, which could help get more eyes on the individuals who deserve more than they've been given. And there are no grammar errors.

We know that this isn't the whole story, but it would have been a decent first step in approaching the inevitable backlash.

the problem is, he said that he did quote: "research" on game development. And he was inspired by SkullGirls. AND HE DIDN'T FREAKING KNOW THAT YOU CAN'T MAKE A DEMO SIMILAR TO SG OFF OF 20K?!

You would have to be nuts. This guy wanted the same fluid animation from SkullGirls, that shit cost money.

I-just... I'm getting angry again. shhhh... breather... okay.

Look, what he did was stupid, foolish, and had this whole "perfect blue sky" mentality to it.

Edit: okay maybe you can make a demo off of 20K if it was just you know... 1 character and not 2 like what was planned for. This would have given more time to get the animation down, and to get the programming of the game tighter. The thing is he didn't do that, and just thought what he was doing was right and if he could get a publisher everything would be a-okay.

Except for the fact that of the *5* fundraisers, the first 2 failed and the amount asked for was lowered for each successful one until they were just going for a demo by the 3rd one.

No amount of answering questions is going to explain away the shenanigans of that.

Edit: Okay, read the thing. Wow.

Claiming he did the first two igg's as an interest check before having a team? That is pretty dumb and all it did was start off with bad will amongst a binch of people.

I don't think he was trying to scam people and we're actually trying to do something. But I also think he was really stupid with his decisions and completely unexpected with his expectations.

I agree, this isn't an adequate way to approach this issue, and doesn't explain nearly enough about the mistakes and misjudgments made. Maybe I'm being positive over this post because the posts that came before it were so much more damning.

This response is only scratching the surface of what desperately needs to be addressed, but look at what came before it: The Furaffinity post blamed others, answered zero questions, and was followed by disabling the account. The Facebook post described that no one can sue them, answered zero questions, and was copy-pasted several times as their official statement on the matter.

In both cases, he said all the wrong things, he didn't have the decency to proof-read for grammar, and gave off a tone that suggested that the intent was to put all this behind him with as little effort as possible.

After what has happened, this interview was not enough. Not by any means. But the posts that came before it were so much worse.

Yeah, which makes this latest bit a pittance. All it looks like he is trying to do is cover his butt rather than trying to be sorry for anything.

This is idealism at its finest.

Comedy gold.

It's like the guy doesn't know jack shit about game development and just thought he could make another Skullgirls

I keep wanting to post gifs in here but I know I'd get in trouble, so I won't.

Oh well, dude tried, I kinda saw this coming since there were two kickstarters and the whole thing had an air of incompetence about it.
One day Furries will get the fighting game they deserve
(Seriously, I've commissioned Furries before and they get the job done well)

I was so uninterested in this game that I didn't follow anything about it.

Why is it not a shock to anyone that the game is canceled?

I think the shock is more of "How did this escalate so badly?!" The lack of payment thing is gross, but also the thing Sean Chiplock posted about Vincent's VO getting screwed over (THEY REUSED DEMO SAMPLES?!) is just so friggin' shady...I feel bad for the people who actually worked hard on this the VOs and the animators.

Okay, so I was originally just going to post a 'ho ho beast fury canceled no one saw that coming,' and just be a huge sarcastic ass, but oh my god, reading the dev's (Term used incredibly liberally) response, I am disgusted. First off, I may be misreading something from that Facebook post, but it sounds like he's basically saying 'So, I know we're not doing the thing, but technically we only promised a demo with two characters, and we did release something not entirely dislike a demo with 1 and a half characters, so y'all fucks can get bent. Also we totally sent out everything we promised despite no proof to that effect,' I really hope I'm misreading something there.

Secondly, not paying VAs or animators and, from what it sounds like from that email, telling them to fuck off when they ask for compensation, not quite the best way to go about making a video game. Not really the best way to make yourself seem like not a hellacious asshole, for that matter.

Also, there might as well have been marshmallows flying around for how amazingly soft-ball that interview was. Like 'It sounds to me like a lot of backers of your project should have done some research from the start,' Fucking SERIOUSLY?

Reading through the old thread, and the Beast's Fury account title was apparently 'Work hard or go home,' And, well, that seems almost comically appropriate. Work hard at making a game, your publicity, paying your goddamn workers, or backpedal yourself all the way home while tossing blame haphazardly on to others like a child desperately trying to convince someone, anyone, that no, it was the dog this time.

It'll probably be a very long time before Ryhan Stevens can ever dream of hiring another professionally trained VA for one of his projects again.

It'll almost certainly be a long time before Ryhan Stevens can ever do anything related to game dev without getting laughed and/or cursed out of the digital internet room, and by 'a long time' I mean 'probably forever'.

This disheartens me, greatly.

Oh. There's an interview? Just gonna... throw my 2 cents in.
beast's fury creator said:
finish the demo to what it looks like today
Is it finished or not? "finished to what it is today" could be said about anything. I seem to remember unfinished shading and animations in the demo. Not to mention the... actual gameplay.
interviewer said:
the demo was pretty well designed
Uh...?
beast's fury creator said:
A lot of people don’t understand the budget of a video game
He says this as if their team wasn't among those who didn't understand the budget. It's just odd that he can say this after not getting the budget right despite two successful fundraisers.
beast's fury creator said:
When you back a project, you must understand that project may fail
This line almost makes it seem like he didn't actively cancel the project. Even without a continuous revenue, they could still be working on it part time out of the public eye, like they claimed to be capable of doing. It's not a failure if you quit, it's you quitting on the people who put their faith and money into you.
interviewer said:
It sounds to me like a lot of backers of your project should have done some research from the start.
I guess... if they had, we wouldn't be in this mess. If the general public knew the cost of making a game, they never would have backed this. I just don't understand, though, why the ever-present theme from these guys is to blame backers for believing in them.
beast's fury creator said:
I had a completed game demo, and two completed fighting characters.
Just because they punch and kick doesn't mean they're completed.
beast's fury creator said:
I owe Sorcerer Lance $900, and BK and his wife $800, and a personal bank loan of $20,000
... what? Why... why is that relevant? Backer money that you use to pay workers shouldn't be mixed with money you're paying your loans back with...?

The interviewer didn't at all address backer's concerns about money wasted on needless animations, such as the animated intro, the x-rays, the finishers, the unique "getting hit by specific move" animations, starting Don before Vincent was finished (and never finishing Vincent!), and animating frames for characters that weren't part of the demo or selling the game to potential publishers. Or the excessive costly nature of things like the Don Bust or the Fight Sticks.

No no. THAT'S what he thinks what a fighting game IS. The guy only really looked at SF4 and most of those matches were guys just poking eachother. and then he saw SG and how pretty and shiny it was and he thought: "Yeah... I can do something like this. And I really like the Furry Community, they have a strong fan base with good artists there... yeah."

disheartens you how? Were you invested into the project? if so that sucks. :C
I wasn't invested, but disappointed this bs happened. In the right hands this game could've been cool...

maybe. we'll never really know. I'm just annoyed that the guys asked for Mike's advice once and then proceeded to ignore it. Rythan says he was inspired by SkullGirls when in reality he should have been inspired by Mike Z. It's not like Mike doesn't know anything about fighting game mechanics and how to build a really good one that helps the player learn and have fun while rewarding skill.

Don't forget when BF's "lead developer" came onto SH in an attempt to defend himself

I'm really glad you canceled your pledge and you honestly think it phases me ? if the kickstarter fail's not a chance over the last 3 weeks my community fanbase has doubled and have gotten animators willing to work for free i see no failure here.

i see no failure here.

Shame the ride is over, I'm going to miss watching it flounder.

This is idealism at its finest.

Hey, don't knock idealism here. Pure hope, love and sky-high ideals is what got SG and Indivisible funded. What Beast's Fury really lacked was.....like....

Self awareness...... ability to learn from mistakes, integrity, accepting criticism.........

Basically, everything you need mentally to make a game. What were they thinking?

Wait, we were involved in all this? I have seen BF posted here but wow. Just wow.

SO NINJA YOU FAMOUS?!?

Hey people here did some digging on the game, it's only fair that people use us as a source.

SO NINJA YOU FAMOUS?!?

No. I don't want to be famous. All I did was look into the main dev crew and their possible experience in fighting games (which was only SF4) and I called out the fact that they had a patron account active during the kickstarter.

Holy fuck, to think I was involved in this?
Amazing.
Hope this doesn't mean Furries will be knocking on my door calling for my blood, or turning me down for when I need some animals drawn.

But, anyway, another reaction gif to this whole thing of Skullheart/Ninja being involved in the cancellation

You think furries will think we're the bad guys? The "creator"'s backpedaling surely must have convinced everyone what an incompetent developer he is.
