It's completely missing the levity and the moments of relaxiation that made the games enjoyable, tbh.
And the second episode just cut off the last enjoyable relationship that it had going for them.
Yeah, I'd agree with this so far, tho hoping for more time to get attached to characters as they're been whittled down in numbers. But didn't have much of a reason to love or miss either of the two dead future foundation members, and Asahina's death was so clearly signposted, it just felt like a wasted opportunity to really tug on my heartstrings. Should have saved it for a few more episodes in at least.
One of my main concerns when this was announced as an anime was it wouldn't have the luxury of time that a visual novel does just to mess around with brief character interactions and non-essential scenes that get you more invested in the characters quirks. And its looks set to be the case going by these first couple of eps. Fingers crossed tho.
I'd also argue that the moments of levity are clearly supposed to come from the Despair side, at least this early into the series. Maybe once Despair side gets more messed up, and Future side has fewer characters to share screen time with we'll get a couple more moments of goofyness.
I don't give a flying fuck to external material, if they are absolutely required for me to care, not even understand, just care, to what is happening on the screen, there has been a massive failure in storytelling.
Also also also also, with Future arc characters popping up on the prequel side, I wouldn't be surprised if the aim is to retroactively get you attached to a character, having just seen them die a few episodes in the future. You are watching the despair episodes as well arent you?
The game IMO did not translate well to the 13 episode First anime as it, like here for the Future arc, shortened the time to learn and care about the characters between the murders. Extending it to 26 might have worked better, adding an episode between Monokuma's forcing of the next killing so you could learn about the characters. Extending the info gathering on the murders would have helped a bit as well.
Yeah I agree with most of this, tho to be fair, we havent had ANY info gathering on who the murderer is have we?
I'm sure they'll start investigating soon now they've had they're first murder post-introduction to the rules.
I will say this.
DR is not one for exemplorary writing.
Neither dr 1 or 2 were amazing in story writing.
You are looking in the wrong place and i believe you just dont care for the dr series at all. . I've read the backstory of each member to appreciate future arc. Thats what it matters to me.
So drop the anime or talk about dr1 or dr2 or actually talk about dr3 and provide a healthy discussion
I've got to say, I think everything you've said here is wrong haha. The games have great stories, theyre just unabashedly over the top. Also not sure how you've read the complete backstories of the Future Foundation members, this is the first time we've been introduced to any of them. (Not including 2 who popped up briefly in DR G, which I'm wouldnt expect any english speakers to have read). And it seems the point FakeangeL is trying to make is that if you have to have read all the surrounding material in order to care about the fate of boxer guy, or wheelchair girl, thats a flaw of the anime series itself.
More productive contribution to my favorite series:
Future arc: who do you think is the traitor?
Is it possible to have an accomplice to the traitor?
Despair arc: each ROD member had a reason and to the 4 first member might be tied to the twilight case. What was izuru's reason? He seems to come after the twilight case in the timeline.
Could be cause of chiaki?
Personally, 'who is the traitor' mysteries never seem to interest me all that much - I din't care about the ongoing 'who's the traitor' thing in SDR2, and I don't really here yet either, likely since character development and killing games rules have been so rushed so far. That said I have a half baked theory on who it could be, but i'll post it after the next episode ifnishes tomorrow. As for the despair arc, I think it was mentioned in SDR2 that the reason Izuru is in despair is because he basically has every possible talent, and so he doesnt really care about anything since there is no real challenge for him in life and also he considers himself as above everyone else for this reason.
So far my fave character is Seiko the chemist. I'm really interested in the dynamic she has with the Blacksmith and Confectioner - why do they consider her a traitor? I gots to know. Also, that thing she does with her eye in the first episode! And just her general look, I feel like she's the most danganronpa-y character there along with Bandai Namco the farmer or whatever he was called (RIP)
