Devil May Cry Thread

Oh boy. Capcom's giving DMC the same ultimatum as Darkstalkers had gotten a couple years back: sell or die. And considering that Arkham Knight is coming out the same day as DMC4SE (much like when Darkstalkers Resurrection was released the same day as Heart of the Swarm), I think we might need to start preparing for the series funeral. Or at least go tell a bunch of people to go buy it.

Dante Must Die for real.

NOOOOOOOOOO. D:

Good thing I already preordered this. At least Capcom is hyping the freaking hell out of this. They know people love the series and are making a large effort to put it out there and make people invested. Do we know what threshold "Sells Well" covers? I'm sure it'll do pretty good. I can't see them abandoning one of their most popular characters like that. Dante is all over the place and honestly, unlike Mega Man, he's got a lot more staying power with that suave nature and just generally being hilarious. If they do it right, its hard for these games to not sell well.

Oh man, I'm stuck on whether I should pre-order this or 2nd encore. ;_;

Do we know what threshold "Sells Well" covers?
Much like with Darkstalkers, no, we don't. If their standards are the same as in October last year, though, the threshold for a possibility of getting a sequel is 2 million sales. Let's hope that DMC4SE comfortably surpasses that.

DMC4SE isn't going to get close to 2 million sales (to put that in perspective, 2 million sales is almost as many sales as DMC or DMC 3's total sales and is two thirds of what DMC4 originally sold). At best it'll get to near a million (and that is still really generous) and I'd imagine that Capcom is hoping for about that number of sales (I know Capcom has had some crazy sales expectations in the past but even they can't be mad enough to want DMC4SE to sell more than a million).

My experience with this series is only the DMC4 and DmC:DMC demos, so I have a question.

I heard that Vergil is a super cool guy and is always getting himself motivated. Is that true?

I would buy, if i had a pc that runs dmc4, or a job. Well, i'll try to keep myself happy learning this game from the vanilla version on the 360 =P.

And about the sales, capcom is a bitch, come on, they must know that if they release a dmc 5, complete, with a lot of replay value, it will sell well

Vergil is a LOT different than the DmC version. He's....more driven I'd say. He has his own quips, but they're more snarky or backhanded, less in your face. He's basically got this air o superiority and just generally a high-class feel to him. He bounces really well off Dante's similar to polar personality. However, on his own, he tends to look a little too serious and not very loose or enjoyable to watch. In battle? Guy rivals Dante in how much cool shit you can cover the screen in.

So that being said is Dante is a bit hot headed, doesnt take his fights seriously, but still a confident fighter?

Or am I completely wrong?

Its not that's he's Hot Headed. Dante knows full well what he CAN do, and knows his limits. Against Vergil? He's totally serious, but against most other enemies, he's more than happy to taunt them or make sarcastic remarks. Dante's grown past his own limits, as evident in DMC4, to the point where he can just turn killing demons into a complete joyride. He's over-the-top but knows his abilities, which is why he's able to do all the things he does. He knows he can do it, knows he can get away with it, and knows its absolutely hilarious, so he just makes every fight a giant party.

Yeah sounds about right.

Even though I know it will never happen, I'm holding off on pre-ordering just in case there's like 10% off for a steam flash sale or something, I was gonna wait till a price drop later but I don't want the series to die...although if they continue along the DmC path with the sequels maybe it would be for the best.

With how poorly it did (from what I heard) there is no risk of another DmC being made.

Well that depends, did the ending to DmC set itself up for a sequel?

It did set itself up for a sequel but with the huge fan backlash and its poor sales performance, we almost certainly won't be getting a sequel for it. ATM, the series is more in a position of whether we will get more of the original series or if the series will be left alongside Megaman.

It was an open ending. Something that the game COULD be continued from but not stating what was it exactly.

Heh. The game's out in Japan for only a couple of days, and already Vergil's looking about as OP as usual:

Green man gaming had a coupon, preorders for under $20.

I'm ready

I've played a bit w/ Vergil, he's pretty fun. Having an issue though where the game keeps using my laptop's integrated graphics instead of my nvidia card so 30FPS boys

Some pretty awesome combo videos already coming out for it, Sakaki and Michellegun's were really nice.

I'm waiting for the master Donguri990 to release one. =P

To be honest, I don't see anyone at Capcom currently having the talent to give the series the treatment it deserves. They've lost or let go of pretty much everyone cool.

Bayontta is pretty much the real continuation of Hideki Kamiya's vision for the series anyway.

Here's a new interview with Itsuno

Sticky note version
- Lady and Trish went the Smash Bros. way of entering the game <IE they started as costumes for the others, but then they decided to have them be separate characters because good guy DMC team>
- Lady and Trish specifically had certain bosses rebalanced to not screw you over from having a nonstandard moveset
- Lady da bes as it should be
- The series' future isn't actually tied to how well 4SE sells <yeah OK, let's see how that turns out>
- Since DmC didn't really bomb OR do gangbusters, there's a better chance in his eyes for both the mainline and reboot universes to coexist with new games each instead of one dying out in favor of the other
- Co-op at some point later maybe possibly

I really want the classic dmc series to go on, while i don't like the ninja theory vision of the series, i won't get mad if that continues if the classic continues too.

If dmc ends, well, they already have excelent games, and i can count on bayonetta and platinum games in general for my needs of crazy action

The DmC series had some redeeming qualities. I think it could really benefit from a sequel that builds off of what it started and works Dante to be more like the mainline Dante. Maybe keep some of the modern edginess and williness to swear but also williness to be an emotional character. It might make him more compelling than mainline Dante while keeping him entertaining. He still wouldn't be up to par with our white haired god slayer, but he could be improved. So I do see a possibility. Plus, a DmC with some platforming and more straightforward levels as opposed to the mainline which has more mazelike levels in contrast does create an interesting comparison. I'd LIKE to see them coexist and DmC to get at least one more game based on this.

Also, anyone else notice that Dante's Osiris combo of Triangle Triangle wait Triangle Triangle Triangle was stolen from Nero? Additionally, the Chakram's air Triangle Triangle wait Triangle was taken from Nero. Hell, the Angel weapons are basically altered versions of Nero's tools in DMC4. I think that's a cool touch. :D

I've never really been a huge Devil May Cry guy; I've mostly accepted the fact that, while yes it's a good series, I'm shit at it and should probably avoid them. My exposure to the series was mostly playing DMC1HD for about an hour and getting halfway through DmCSE before putting it down, but I'm loving DMC4SE so far. I think I'm about halfway through Nero's story, which if I remember correctly is about a quarter of the way through the game, and besides a few issues with the camera, I'm absolutely loving it.

One thing, those kind of games, they are kinda similar to fighting games in the sense that they seem impossible at first, but if you work enough, everyone can get good at them, since you have the dmc hd collection, i recommend playing dmc 3, that game is awesome, even for today standards. =P

And if you need more motivation, remember, at least you are not DSP. =P

Quite a bit of DmC!Dante's entire character (including combat style) was taken from Nero. Four hit standard combo, an alternate combo stemming from hit 2 that smacks everyone around him, aerial rave as a standard attack with helm breaker/split being secondary, Roulette Spin (and all the other moves that share names), the grapples are basically Snatch and Hell Bound remapped to their own button combinations, the focus on parrying and countering moves, a move that simultaneously dodges and counters enemy attacks, an air dash attack, a gun that can shoot delayed explosives when charged... Heck, even the visual sloppiness of his attacks, his being a douche towards everyone but the designated love interest and his penchant for swearing come from Nero. I can only assume that's why DMC purists hated Donte from the start: they basically turned him into a worse version of Nero!

Donte when first revealed was a complete different character tho, like, a lot of stuff happened. This game is a mess.

But you know what devil may cry isn't a mess? Devil May Cry 3.

So, since this was my first character action game, i still love this game, but i never got good at it (honestly, the only game i'm kinda good in this genre is bayonetta, because i played a lot, a lot), but i'm going to go back to dmc 3, and practice, it is going to be a long journey, but i hope to be successful.

The announcement gave me pretty much everything I wanted from DMC5.

They did give me a slight heart attack at start though, with how similarly Nero looks to Reboot-Dante. But when he revved up his sword, showing clearly it's Nero, all was well.

Also, we have a new trailer.

There was a different gameplay section on the IGN live stream that was a producer showing shit off.

Also, first impression being that I hate the arm ammo thing, but I have to say; I like the idea that the arms are styles, I like that they can overload and break from doing supers and that he can choose to sever them to switch them, I love the visual of him losing one of these arms and jamming his stub down in to a fucking belt of arms to load a new one on. So I guess I like everything the mechanic gives me. I guess I like the arm ammo thing.

If you didn't already know, you will apparently be able to call Nico to drop off arms during missions (you can also choose them at the start of missions ofc). It seems that they're also going to make them quite plentiful throughout all of the levels to stop people from hoarding. Don't know if that further helps assuage any of your concerns but it did help some of mine. I don't remember the source but DMCInfo tweeted something out that talked about it (might be in Dahbomb's general DMC5 gamescom gameplay summary on resetera that they tweeted).
