I know only top 8 will be streamed and I don't know if this is actually doable but if someone is able to record the pool games and upload them after that would be pretty cool

Fire alarm-based delays aren't fun, but everything else was. I had an excellent time :D

I did too until I accidentally tagged in big band during one of my bomb patterns. Almost threw my stick and quit.

Femster and Elda Talduda are my OC skullgirls players. They were the strongest in the skullgirls fighting academy created in doctor robotniks secret underwater volcano lab

In an effort to have Combo Breaker commentary be as well-curated as possible, I'd really appropriate any feedback anyone might have on the commentary at Frosty Faustings. There's always room for improvement. Dhoppler, McPeanuts, and myself provided commentary this time around.

Seconding the request for recordings of pool games, although that's not easy to do.

Also WHAT Atomic Collider is there and entered?
You're all dead.

Everyone in my pool bowed down the moment I entered the room. Though let me tell you I didn't want to crush everyone hopes and dreams, so even though I could have taken that whole tournament with my eye's closed I decided to do the right and throw my matches.

Finally watched part of top 8, couple of things:

1. I like that you talk a bit about player background history.

2. All your voice-stuff / projection is good (since that's something you are really well acquainted with). Just make sure you aren't drowning out the other person which kinda happened with dhoppler, but that's also on him for not taking the spotlight at times... don't be so nervous dhoppler!

3. Your game knowledge is pretty lacking, or at least it doesn't show in this commentary. I don't feel like you really understand or articulate why players do things, which kinda connects to my fourth point. You don't talk about match-up related stuff with characters and i dont know if its because you dont have the game knowledge off the back of your head or because you just choose not to, but talking about what the matchup looks like on paper and then later connecting how the players adjust to the matchup is always really interesting. I think this is the most important thing, especially for SG I think game knowledge is the most important thing about commentary.

4. You do lots of play by play, which i've come to feel is not what the focus of commentary should be in Skullgirls. People are already seeing what's happening (you can plug what the different hit indicators need to help new players maybe), so I prefer when people spend more time talking about what players are doing or what situations they are calling their assists in. When Peanuts commentates he's almost never doing play by play unless something really crazy happens, in which he stops what he was saying and tries to piece together what happens.

But really game knowledge is the most important thing about commentary IMO. Whether it's for new players or veterans alike. Right now I'd really prefer to have Peanuts/Blaise/Warped/Kenin on commentary for Combo Breaker because they're all well spoken players who have lots of game knowledge, know how to present it, and have the right balance of being casual and professional. Peanuts is my personal favorite person to commentate with because it just feels like we're having a conversation about the game other people are listening in on.

Wub yoo Kai, but I second this.
This is actually why I liked pairing up with Taluda on commentary back in the day, and also why I went with Dhoppler and Peanuts (who were, funnily enough, my backups for each other in case one of them didn't make top 8), because I felt their natural inclination to speak on the technical was a good counterbalance to my own style.

I know the game, and I know the matchups, though I admit that I intuit much of that. I could always know them better, though, and I could certainly increase the frequency and specificity with which I talk about them on commentary. I will make that my primary focus of improvement.

SHOUTOUTS TIME

I had a very good time at Frosty Faustings and it was easily my best tournament performance ever. Looking forward to keeping the momentum going for Combobreaker.

@mcpeanuts it is always good to see you man. Enjoyed talking about ways I can improve my game, Friends, as well as everything else we usually talk about. I will not forgive you for sneaking sportsball discussion into our TvC discussion you cheeky bastard. Always a pleasure man, looking forward to continued low ratings and threats of cancellation of White People season 2.

@NCV it was great seeing you again man. I'm upset you beat my friend, but it keeps him motivated so that's nice.

@Datagram probably hung out with you the most the whole weekend. It was great meeting you properly and chilling with you. You're cool people. That Chinese food was FUCKING AWFUL good lord. I still can't believe how terrible it was.

@Clawsome Bombs good seeing you again. Learn that headless tech! It is good I promise

@cloudKing211 thanks for playing me a bunch and giving me advice on how to improve, I appreciate it man. It was nice seeing you again, look forward to playing you more in the future.

@fenster great seeing you as always. Thanks for the advice on how to improve my game. I guess now I awkwardly mention that I beat you, but I really think I played out of my mind and am proud of that win. You've been one of my biggest rivals for awhile, and I feel like most of the time I play I get crushed, so making headway in that department really tells me I've improved. We should continue playing as regularly as we do, and you're always welcome in KC at MAXOUT whenever you own a vehicle that won't explode when the gas pedal is pressed.

@Kai you've improved tremendously as a player man. I legit thought you were going to take those sets. Keep on playing, I look forward to seeing you more in the future because we didn't get to hang out as much as I like. You're always welcome in Kansas City. Also thank you very much about being a good sport over the video I filmed exclusively to troll my friend.

@Elda Taluda from that first tournament in Missouri we met you you've always been one my biggest friends, supporters, but also rivals in the SGC. You continue to be an amazing player. I am going to continue to play to match you one day. The set we played was close enough that I feel like I've improved a lot as a player. Congratulations on your performance

@Duckator thanks for ruining my dreams :( Congrats on your performance, you played super well and I need to work a lot harder

@dekillsage it was good seeing you again man. I wanted to talk to you about some aspects of the game but I forgot, I can probably hit you up on steam sometime to ask the questions. Congratulations on winning!

@Katy Pamyurin your taste in japanese comic books is quite odd. Third Strike is a good game. That one guy dies in that one movie

Additional shoutouts:
to whoever pulled that fire alarm. Way to use your salt to ruin EVERYONE ELSE'S matches in the process. What a jerk.
Keychain I won at the raffle that is supposed to hold an arcade stick button but looks like something you would buy in a brown bag video store.
Dunkin Donuts for being the WaWa equivalent on this trip, and being a much needed source of nourishment.
The snowstorm on the East Coast for being a 7-3 matchup. I hope you guys are back safely by the time you read this!

Anyone else: I am sorry if I forgot to tag you. Once again this community is wonderful. Looking forward to seeing you guys at Combobreaker!

No, it was all part of an elaborate ruse by the Melty Blood community to get everyone to come out and watch their grand finals.

As I said during NEC, I think it's required watching for anybody who wants to commentate SG2E that they watch Marvel vs. Capcom 2: The Movie. Dolfinh already offered 99% of the advice I was going to offer, but if you want a good inspiration the video is there.

Mike Ross offers a technical explanation of the mechanics that are happening.
Justin Wong has an intuitive grasp of each situation and explains why players are making each decision on a micro scale AND on a macro scale (the latter of which is often overlooked!).
Dogface reacts to exciting things and punctuates the delivery.

I think you're a great Mike Ross and a great Dogface, but you're not yet a great Justin Wong. It's fine; that's the hardest part to achieve and acquire and very few people can actually do it. The best part is that the Justin Wong portion of the skillset will make you a better overall player, as well, so it'll have a huge benefit for you off the mic in addition to on the mic.

Justin Wong's commentary is amazing because he'll say stuff like "player 1 will do X and player 2 will read it and react with Y", then it'll happen. The only SG commentator I've really seen do that is Duckator.

I've been meaning to get on and talk about my commentary. I felt like I didn't really do too well this time around. I'll try to heed what's been said already. There anything else y'all think I can do? My current plans are to just learn more about the cast, play more with various new characters, and pick the brains of a few players to get more insight on what people are doing and should be doing.

Maybe you should do what i do and lose at Maxout? That way, you have more time to hone your commentary skills/

I almost feel like we could make this whole commentary thing its own thread, but:

I think 2 things that are very important for EVERY commentator, regardless of game, to be able to do:

1) comment on what's not on the screen. By that I mean explaning mechanics that might not be obvious, describing the likely thought process of the players and offering some insight into WHY players do things, etc. Anyone can say "oh he got hit, he's getting comboed, he dropped the combo, got the reset" whatever, and more importantly anyone can SEE that. Focus on things that wouldn't be clear to someone with basic game knowledge watching the game

2) be able to fill "dead air". This is more important when commentating games like MOBAs where there are long periods of time with nothing "exciting" happening, but it can happen in SG too. Basically you want to be having one commentator talking at almost any given time.

@Kai is good at the 2nd point, he always has something to say even when nothing out of the ordinary is happening on screen whether it be something regarding game mechanics, player history, etc. As we've discussed however, the first point is something to work on.

@Dhoppler I think you are very good at the 1st point, your commentary at both FF and the JP vs NA exhibition was good...when you were talking. At FF Kai was talking over you a lot, and during the exhibition both you and datagram had long periods where no one was saying anything. Think about information that would be relevant to the current situation, maybe something about how a player/character likes to play or something about what one player might be trying to do, to provide to the audience in those situations. Don't be afraid to be more assertive on the mic either, I know in person you know how to get hype but you're really shy on commentary.
