[Jul 29, 2016] Defend The North 2016 (White Plains, NY)

For anyone going to this, anyone spots for rooms or nah?

Despite the somewhat overambitious expectations they have towards all this, I would be pleased as pudding to see a 20-30 player tournament at DTN because of all our collective experiences at HitBox Arena proved that an SG bracket can be crazy hype, regardless of its size.

If the quote unquote "usual suspects" show up with a new players getting on stream, then that's a "WIN-WIN" in my book. If by some miracle or outside phenomena intervention that the numbers increase, even better. My concern is putting on a great show so that everyone watching can experience this game as it was always meant to be experienced.

Regardless of what unfolds, I'll see all of you there & I'm looking forward to some amazing battles.

Ill be registering onsite, so hopefully there will be more people when tournament comes

wasn't mentioned in that post but I've been told by multiple sources that the pot bonus has also been removed (if that wasn't implied in moving to side game status idk)
 
... really? And they wonder why we don't trust new venues that pop up spouting sunshine and rainbows. I was trying to figure out how I could bend over backwards to make this happen for me in the next three days, but now I don't see the point. I'm gonna see everyone at GUTS 4 anyways.

Edit: It being announced that it will lose the pot bonus (and that it almost was removed entirely).

It's also kind of annoying that it's in the discussion bit on facebook. It doesn't display for me (maybe because I don't have an account? not sure).

I can't tell if he's being sarcastic about making it a side game at first? It sorta sounds like he's like "oh, sure, I'll just make it a side game so people don't have to pay to play it, hur hur hur", but I would think the TO wouldn't behave that way.

I would also think they wouldn't take pot bonuses or demote a game three days before the event, but hey, that's just me.

tbh I don't think you can blame the TO. This time this is the SG community's fault. I think this dude was unrealistic expecting 60 entrants, but 11 is pretty ridiculous considering tristate has so many SG players. We blew it.

We should have made a better showing, yeah. If we can make XenoEncore, a local, bigger than a major with a 500 pot bonus, yeah, there's something wrong. I agree, we dropped the ball, and we didn't honestly deserve main game status or the pot bonus like this. I'm not upset that they took it, I just don't like they way they did.

They knew they weren't getting as many entrants as they wanted for a while, and they could have said something to us at some point (through Twitter, or Facebook, or by making an account like the other TO's we've had come to the forum). They've mentioned Skullgirls like twice on their Twitter since May, and until they told us it'd be a side game they haven't mentioned it at all on their Facebook. The only reason we even knew they wanted a lot of people was because of Aphro telling us, and the only reason we knew there was no pot bonus is because the TO mentioned it off-hand in a FB comment thread.

I don't know if i'd call it "we blew it" when people made a deliberate choice to attend other events instead? From what I've heard it sounded like most tristate players would rather just save their money to go to another major.
 
Yeah we could have made DTN bigger, but its no big deal. I wish they would have told us how many entrants they needed for the pot bonus, afaik they didn't. Makes it really easy to say nevermind at any time.

Oy, SG is still happening. We are aiming for 6pm today. I believe it will be in the hearthstone room! See you guys there

Alright... I need to say this. Not a representative of KPB. Not even as "Aphro Dynamek". I have to say this as Michael Jonathan (yes, that's what "J." stands for) Dorsey.

I want to personally apologize to everyone who attended this event. In particular, the Ragtag Group. Hand to the Almighty, if I could refund your travel expenses for coming all the way out to my neck of the woods, I would & with interest. All of you... deserve MUCH BETTER... than this! While I'm sure that the way things went down may have brought back momentary flashes of "the old days", I never wanted that for you. At this moment, I want to reaffirm the promise I made a year & some change ago: Whatever is in my power to do to help support this game & its community, I will do.

Again, from the bottom of my heart, I am so sorry for the subpar treatment you received. I will commit myself to keeping my promise and you can ask anyone who knows me personally... I don't break my word for anything.

Carry on & keep playing Skullgirls.
