We're getting a 3DS game too

Atlus USA was quick to jump out and say there are currently no plans for localizing the Switch game.

That killed the hype I had to actually try getting a Switch at launch, but that's probably a good thing. Now I'll just get it whenever it actually has the game, assuming we do get it.
 
I think it's not very far in development either
so we'll probably get a localization when it's like
actually announced what it is and when it is

I wonder the same thing about EPP. In theory they could also be sceptical because of how the Wii-U went, but that's me trying to come up with an answer to your question, I didn't say or imply I thought we weren't getting it, I said I assumed we were. I'm just mentioning news about the game.

I think we will get it, I'm just saying that it's the system seller to me, and this put enough perspective in to make me go "Why buy it early just to wait?". Waiting for Final to even get mentioned by Atlus USA at all sure was fun.

As I said, I assume we are. The news story is they jumped up to say "no current plans" which is unsurprising considering it just entered development. For all we know Atlus USA didn't even know the game existed until last night.

Again, I assume we're getting the game. My editorial comment is "Oh yeah, it just started development and won't be localized for a while anyway, why rush on buying the console where this is the game I'm buying the console for?" and that's all.
 
Also I just realized that says "HD project" not "Switch project" while the other is defined as "3DS project". Wonder if it's not exclusive.
 
I'll tell you what. If they can pull another Nocturne out of their bums with SMT V they might be able to give the franchise a proper third wind. They will have all the assets done and they will be able to do other games with them if this one sells well enough alongside Persona 5.

isn't it crazy how the main girl in Persona 1 has to deal with the constant pain of physical and mental illness to the point that it causes her depression and nihilism to supernaturally manifest in such a way that threatens the existence of everything she loves and how the strength gains from she and her friends overcoming her negative emotions gives her the meaning in life she's been searching for, allowing her to pursue a new dream of becoming a therapist such that she can help others so that they don't wind up like she once was

isn't it also crazy how the main girl of TMS #FE is a shallow tool with no personality, conflict, or development
 
I'm with ruin on that one. The main devs from megaten either abandoned ship (Okada, tadashi) or are giving up doing anything and just enter the projects so people can plaster their name on the credits (kaneko)

this is really sad

To be fair, the main girl of TMS did get a lot of development.

It was just all removed or changed for the English version.

It seems a pretty consistent opinion that SMT IV and Apocalypse simply didn't carry the ethos of previous titles, despite best intentions and a few good ideas.

All I'm saying is, if they wanna capture that vision again, their best bet is to reassemble the old team like DukeMagus said.

It's just brought up so many times and it's gotten old. I just like all the games and don't hold any of them to any standard conpared to the other. If you don't like the new ones, I'm fine with that, I guess I'm just sick how there's some people who seem to only want to comment on here to bring up the aforementioned quotes from above.

I will admit I'm also a bit pissy on this.
 
The frequency and nature of the complaints I've heard have been completely within reason, and with a new watershed title coming out that marks the mainline series return to full-fledged console 3d for the first time in thirteen years, I think fans are completely justified in once again vocally voicing their opinions on the direction of the series.
 
To be honest one of the reasons I watch this thread is for everyone to shit on Atlus as it is now and jack themselves dry about how good the past games were. Even if it is a self-righteous yet wholly justified circle jerk.
 
TBH I'm a little less enthused about the past games then I used to be, and I actually don't dislike SMT4 as much as some people do (there are actually some things I like about it quite a bit).

But I am starting to get a bit bored. The series needs to successfully innovate and recapture some of its old aesthetic nuance if it wants me to keep buying new installments.

This is a golden opportunity to do it.

I mean all I want is for another PS2 generation for Megaten. Nocturne was a huge departure from the original SNES formula but it worked so well that it helped launch a number of sub-related SMT games like Raido and DDS using the same engine and assets. Then Persona took over the spotlite and while I can defend P3. P4 is less defensible in terms of quality.
If SMTV works, whatever form it takes Atlus will have that to work with as well as the P5 engine and we could see them actually have a console generation with more hits than misses.

I'm still going to gripe about SMTIV because SJ was a much more impressive package overall and it lost it's canonical entry status and was reduced to a reference in IV.

As the resident lover of SMTII and the older SMT entries let me be the first to say that the past games up until the PS1 had some of the hardest interface hurdles to overcome given their vintage. It's the reason I haven't played SMTI more than once because I have trauma from using the map spell in that game.

I think I must be misinterpreting your post, because to me it seems like your implying that reflects the quality, which would require ignoring every other factor around their previous releases as well as boil down to "higher sales is a direct result of higher quality". That statement isn't remotely true, I could list examples in video games alone all day if I had to.

Atlus games have certainly gotten far more accessible over time, that's true of of any long standing RPG series. That doesn't mean that they're flat out better games. SMT IV Final is probably the best mainline game in terms of straight up playability and player friendliness, it's still not going to be remembered as fondly as Nocturne by most people (I'm personally on the other side od this one, actually). More people have probably played SMT IV now than have ever played any prior mainline game (except maybe Nocturne), it still offers you almost nothing as a player the older games didn't already do better except ease of use and a few small exceptions I'm sure you could come up with.

I think a significant part of the reason why Atlus is going down the waifu route is that it's what sells gangbusters across Japanese media right now. Even if they were the best things ever made gameplay-wise, the pre-3DS mainline games would bomb in modern Japan because there's nothing cutesy or lovable to balance out all the grimdark in SMT stories of the era, and for whatever reason, a lot of Japanese otaku think waifus are enough of a balancing factor to warrant checking it out. To change that, you'd have to either change the target market away from Japan's otakus or make unmitigated grimdark popular in Japan. Neither of those are gonna be easy tasks.
 
Personally I'm fine with waifus. As long as they're well written.

Also SMT really needs an option to play as a female protagonist so I can self-waifu. Cmon, it's 2017.

In retrospect, Nocturne was the Dark Souls of RPGs when it launched.

I wish they discovered that niche that like grim and dark plots and scenarios again

Nocturne and Dark Souls together were very influential on my "leave the more cosmic lore up to player interpretation" style preference of video game world-building, though.

- darker tone than most of the RPGs of the same time
- punishing, but (mostly) fair
- heavy emphasis on customization
- more questions than answers
- characters make few appearances, but each time their monologues are full of strong and impactful remarks
- death as a constant
- MC as an unwilling savior that can choose more than one way to impact the cycle (including breaking it)

And probably more

So, can I get a special authorization to do that comparison?
 
No, because games like that existed before Dark Souls.

Is the same problem as only comparing everything to Harry Potter.
