Skullbats have been the SG communities' version of ranked battles. OP heavily borrowed from Sanger's old post. EU and Oceanic Skullbats now also running. Check out those threads if that's your region!

Friendly Competitive Environment to Level Up Yo Skullgirls

Online tournament league using the swiss system. Everyone gets a chance to play equally under this type of tournament without being eliminated.

As a RanBat (Ranked Battle) statistics will be kept for ranking all entrants. At the end of the season top 8 ranked players will play double elim bracket for funsies and hype.

Steam Group:
Skullbats PC <-- CLICK THIS THEN JOIN GROUP CHAT ON THE RIGHT BEFORE START TIME AND YOU'RE IN

Current Season Weekly Start Time:
Sundays 8:00 pm eastern

Brackets will not be finalized till after the tournament starts.
Rules:
-Entrants are expected to be in Skullbats PC steam group chat 5 minutes prior to start time.
-Matches are played in beta. When characters are implemented unfinished you may request your opponent not play them.
-Each match is best 3/5. Top 8 at the end of the season will be 2/3 until finals.
-Winner must keep team/assists. Loser may change.
-No game breaking glitches.
-If someone does not show up for their match in 5 minutes they will be given a warning, and in 5 more minutes they will be disqualified for the round
-Someone from the match must report who won, but the winner is the one that is held responsible for it.
-Any player may choose to forfeit if they decide the connection is unplayable. The other player will simply get the win.
-If both players agree the connection is bad or don't want to play in it, they may report a draw.
-For ease of fast reporting, please use the following format: "[report] Winner Score" ex. "[report] WhiteFury 3-0"
-In the event of a tie preventing a clean top 8 at the end of the season after tiebreaker score we'll play it out to decide. Weeklies often have multiway ties and lack a definiteive winner as is the nature of swiss.

I commend that you're generous enough to offer prizes, hope PC SkullBats goes well.

Wait, prizes? Well I'll be jiggered.

Almost enough incentive for me to give it a shot.

Thanks for the prizes WhiteFury.

Well, I'll certainly try and get into this. Sounds like a good way to try and level up.

Looks good. I'm sure I'll enter a few.

Every Saturday? I'll see if I can make it this week, even though I'll get my ass handed to me

I'll definitely join this tournament at one point once I get more practice in.

I would join, if I wasn't a semi beginner. Honestly, I'll just get raped if I go in right now. xD

Don't worry about being a beginner. From what I understand, people of all skill levels are welcome. Besides, consistently playing good players once a week is a good way to steadily improve at the game, especially if you ask them for advice or record your matches for others to critique later.

Because of the swiss format, you're always fighting people with the same record as you. After a few rounds you tend to find people who are an even match. The Skullbats are actually a really good place for players of all skill levels to meet players who are at the same skill level. It is possible you will get stomped in the first round or two before the swiss format "knows" how good you are, but as long as your ego can withstand that, the Skullbats are a good experience.

Can't ever have these on a Sunday, can you? :(
Maybe. Depends on the interest. Also wtf people must really hate SRK. 3x as many posts here within a day. Threads been up on SRK for 3 weeks >.>

I would participate every week, but it's always been on Fri/Sat, and I'm not free those times. In my mind, most people would be just as available on Sunday 7pm as a they would on Saturday 7pm, so all I'm asking is that you consider it. Puh-lease?

I work 12-8 (Pacific) Saturdays. If there's any means of moving this to sunday I'd be able to participate and would gladly throw some money into the prize pool. <3

Otherwise it may be more pertinent for organization of east/west divisions to accommodate time zones and latency.

OP updated with a link to the standings. Well if Sunday works for most we can do that. Ill ask people in chat this week and if its not too short notice for people we'll move it this week.

I'm out this weekend anyway (didn't know there was gonna be a skullbats :P), so don't move it on my account, at least for this weekend. Assuming it does, in fact, get moved to Sunday, though, I'll be on it starting the weekend after this :)

Sundays do actually work better for me. Local tournaments around here are almost always on Saturdays. If Skullbats was on Sunday, I wouldn't have to pick between playing my tournament offline or online.

So like VirtualNinja, I'm a complete and total beginner, but this looks fun. Any chance you guys are still taking on new people for skullbats, or should I wait for the next season? I may not be able to make every single session, but I'm gonna try for as many as I can. Do you guys just "show up" to the IRC chat and then try to get matched up? And is it now Saturdays or Sundays?

Also, the skill level inherent in the current list of players scares me.... O_O

can I join?
fuck prizes, what really matter is playing with other people and having fun

^^ This.

Personally, I would add "learning from others and getting better" to the list as well :)
I find it really hard to know why you suck if you play online without any feedback to your play.

yea,the best thing for your improvement is a feedback telling you things like:your mistakes, your weak points, etc

To all who have asked or are wondering: You can join whenever you feel like it. The only thing that happens if you're not there every week is you lose out on some points towards the prize. There's no real reason for me to close off entrants the way I'm doing it so don't worry.

The weekly tournaments themselves though we close entry about 5 minutes prior to scheduled start just so we can get going. At that point you've got people sitting around waiting so unfortunately we can't just keep resetting the brackets if people show up late.

Damn! That's when I'm right in the middle of work. I dunno how I'm gonna get to play you guys then.

Though I'll prolly miss most sessions, this seems alot more fun and less stressful than other tourneys, so I'm in.

:( Did you play in one already? Don't recognize your name. Unfortunately both ways someone loses but most are in favor of Sunday.

So we're not having skullbats today after all? I was just on IRC about an hour ago, and confirmed that today was when everyone was gonna show up....

Its moved to tomorrow. Sorry about the confusion.

Maybe? I'm on IRC idling right now, and there doesn't seem to be any activity indicating anything starting up....

Skullbats starting now in the Steam chat room! Join the skullbats steam group, and enter chat

Yeah I got my ass handed to me. Still very fun though. Everybody was very nice. Skullgirls has a very nice community so far.

Agreed. I went 2-3, but it was fun regardless.

Besides, I imagine everyone'll get new friend adds out of this. Practice partners never hurt!

Same here. I went 1-4 and almost got double perfected by mcpeanuts, but dang was that ever a fun tournament.

I have a question: If I win a game, can I elect to re-order my team, while keeping the same characters?

I have a question: If I win a game, can I elect to re-order my team, while keeping the same characters?

Not usually no. If you picked wrong you can ask your opponent if you can fix it. Rules for assists and order are sometimes debated but most often winner is expected to keep the same everything.

Winner can always change team order. During the loading screen after you pick your character you can hold down either assist to have the character in that slot be on point.
