The Generically Named Thread Where We Come Up With Ways To Help Skullgirls

what patience render. So on another note i was thinking more on the simple pr side. Some memes and gifs can be thrown around more often. My thinking is people would see it and ask where it came from, or just think about the game. On the plus side its not labor intensive, but there wont be a significant jump in say actual funds but in awareness of the game and some buzz. The only thing people would have to do is use them. All i did was google skullgirls meme to find some. Eventually there might be one to be used commonly.

Also just generally everyone can help with pr by just retweeting the sg tweets or if there has been any updates tweet about it. Most of this is "duh" but most dont realize how powerful it is.

...Wow... just... wow... Render, you have patience of the Gods... *claps*

If I may speak my mind I got into skullgirls around October of last year I wasn't that big on skullgirls or fighting games at the time only hearing about it occasionally and seeing it only sometimes in my suggestion bar on youtube, later I got curious on what skullgirls was so I googled it I was led to a news article on destrucroid it was about skullgirls hiring a porn artist I believe. I didn't read any further because I thought the game was made by a bunch of scumbags. However late in October I was listening to a podcast and they talked about the skullgirls indiegogo campain and they started talking about Big Band. Once again out of curiosity I looked up the campaign which I think was finished at the time I thought big band was a cool looking character and he had an interesting play style. I researched more about the game, watch some gameplay videos and thought it looked awesome I liked the art style I liked the story mode, I loved peacock because I have a love of old time cartoons. I decided to buy the game full price on a whim not something I do often. Since I grew up on smash bros I really hated conventional fighters and I still don't care for street fighter but skullgirls had such a good tutorial for noobs, my main problem with conventional fighters is that I feel their meant for a diehard fans and previous fighters Marvel vs capcom is my prime example of a bad tutorial in my opnion, however this is where skullgirls shined for me it had a great tutorial for new beginners like me teaching you the mechanics of the game and how every character plays. Months later skullgirls is now my favorite fighting game because of how much it gets updated, great community, great gameplay, and great charcters this game actually convinced me to buy a fightstick somthing I never thought I'd do.

What I'm trying to say with my long winded story is that in my eyes Skullgirls is a great fighting game but has terrible first impressions to a casual like me. I also don't want to tell lab zero how to do their job, but I feel like they could make better publicity for their game lab zero didn't convice me to check out and buy skullgirls a podcast did. I do understand marketing is exspensive and lab zero only has money to work on the game but ANYTHING could be good publicity. Skullgirls at evo is a good example of good publicity and it was actually the first evo stream I ever watched. We need more of this there are a lot of fans here in the states but one thing that annoyed me was that L0 was going to all these cons in japan. I live on the east coast so I dont expect lab zero to come to any cons nearby but they could at least go to Conventions on the east coast. Sell some merchandise host a panel ANYTHING. The internet is big and I don't mean to tell lab zero how to do their job but the internet is not always the answer sometimes you need to show why your product is great and why you should buy it in person.

Hi! Thanks for your support. We're really glad you like the game!

I just wanted to respond to say that we've never been at any conventions in Japan. I don't know where you got that.

Going to cons outside of California is really expensive and taxing since we don't have a marketing budget that would cover it for us, but earlier this year a few people on the team were invited as guests to MomoCon in Atlanta. It was a great con and we were really honored to be invited. We would love to go to more conventions around the country, but Lab Zero doesn't have any physical merch to sell, so putting down a few thousand $$ to have a booth doesn't always convert very well, especially considering the cost of travel.

Can someone enlighten me as to how a ton of people think we're doing all sorts of shit we're not actually doing? Like releasing figures in Japan and going to conventions over there? How does that happen?

I think the convention thing came from the Japan Amusement Expo back in February where you guys were featured alongside Yatagarasu. I guess some thought you guys were there since you sent in a video.

That's it I couldent remember the name

The figures are probably from that one guy with the custom valentine stuff. And I think on facebook I kept seeing some ad for a parasol figure. I'm looking for it online now. It's the one where it looks like she's doing napalm quake.

Because people assume that you and Autumn have given approval for all the fan related stuff. I imagine some people think the SG Doujins are sanctioned by you guys as well.

Yeah, I think I'll need to make an article explaining the story behind those figures again as they haven't really been talked about since SkullHeart went down last year. I probably should have explained that prize better in the Eliza contest too.

I understand marketing cost money and I know lab zero isn't loaded with money like a triple A company all I can say is take the publicity opportunity if you you think it will create good publicity, I'm not telling Lab zero how to run their company infact I appalled them for their involvement in the community and listing to fans most company's don't do that, my biggest fear is that there is no answer to the problem at least not now. I'm not going to hold my breath for SG comics/manga, anime or figurines, but I do fear what will happen when the money runs out and lab zero cant update the game anymore. Now maybe they have I plan I don't know it's not my place to ask but the game I feel is better then most fighting games it does so many thing right that I wonder why bigger fighting games don't implement them (ex: infinte combo breakers) and I'm afraid it will go out with a whimper and never be heard of again. Say most of us move on one day what's going to bring the new generation besides word of mouth. I've tried to recruit new players from my school but how do you explain the game to them? most of the people I know don't care about fighters if they do it's Smash bros but they only play it casually. Say someone asks me about what my favorite fighting game is I say skullgirls when I get asked what it is it's really hard to explain because like I said before there's ALOT of sexual content that drive players away. I don't want lab zero to change the game I love the massive amount of charm the game has but I don't think other people will see my point

The point I'm trying to make is I respect lab zero immensely, they do care what the fans have to say but people like me have tried everything to try to promote the game but to no avail. This marketing problem has no answer as of yet and I do think we should still try to spread the game as much as we can but as of right now there's no answer and I cannot come up with a realistic answer

I had a stupid idea at work today: we have tons of people that stream this game, why don't we all get together and host a 24 hour stream?

Or even a 48 hour stream?

If we got enough traffic, Skullgirls would hop to the top of the Twitch view list and attract attention.

I KNOW ITS STUPID OK, I WAS SLEEPDEPRIVED.

are you talking the pjwinning lobby or ??? But you are right about the consistent lobby thing there are like three or so streamers that stream a random lobby once in a while if they just chose to go to one channel it would bump up viewership but I think they would have to organize themselves for all that and want to do that. This is if im interpreting what you are saying correctly :/

also @Magma442 I played the typing of the skullgirls with my none fighting game friends and they found it hilarious and really got into it. I just mashed on the stick while they typed. For others when they get hands on with the game they eventually didn't notice the "assets" as much. But who knows maybe there can be an unclenched pearls edition where you just play as hitboxes. I thought of this you know lol like all the characters in Victorian outfits lol.

Anywho I'm bringing sg to my uni tomorrow since there is a small tourney and they like to play sg casually. I will try to find a consistent day to bring it.

are you talking the pjwinning lobby or ???

No, because people would actually be watching the stream.
:PUN:

Nah, but I think it'd be cool if we came up with a twitch called "Save Skullgirls" or something and then everyone took turns streaming for like 1 hour, or 2 hours, or as long as they had available.
I think we have enough streamer in different timezones that we could actually pull off at least a 24 hour stream.

I mean, fuck.
If we could get LabZero and EightSixed to help out, we could definitely pull the stream into the top played game on Twitch. They average like 200 viewers each time they start their stream, so we'd only really need to pull a couple hundred more.

If may not seem like much, but people DO watch that top played game thing.

I got 7-8 friends interested in the game by playing, drawing and talking about it. It's really little but that's what I can do. That's all what most of us can do.

Instead of having a few popular streams with hundreds of viewers, we can have hundreds of streams with no viewers!

Joking aside, I might jump in to do some streaming at some point. I've been meaning to play more.

Hi, just wanted to point out that the article you're talking about (either the Destructoid one or the Kotaku article, or any of the subsequent other fire-spreading articles based on the original Destructoid article) was written completely without anyone asking us or the artist for our side of the story. The actual story being: the artist applied for a job, took our standard animation test, and did a great job on it. We didn't hire him because of his past work - it was entirely about how well he did on the test and his overall professional attitude.

So to summarize: we can't control what people will write about us especially if it's for misleading scintillating clickbait. Great, isn't it?

I know that now due to looking into it more Skullgirls is now one of my favorite games

This thread is already long so i haven't read every thing.
At this point doesn't lab zero want to be making other games either new ips or licensed games for other companies kinda like what wayforward is doing?

As great as the indiegogo campaign was and I'm glad that i got to play the game on steam, play Squigly and stuff it was kind of a double edged sword since they've had to be committed to over a years worth of work for less than minimum wage. Then again they were working for nothing while in development. At any point after skullgirl's launch they could have jumped ship, get other jobs and skullgirls would have just been in mde forever so i dono.

Also the tournament going crow is in the minority of the possible skullgirls buying crowd. All the people who went to EVO is a fraction of the total amount of people who bought street fighter.

You know it's fucked when I can find more people to play Guilty Gear here than Skullgirls.

The only people I've been able to get into the game are people that aren't really into fighting games. They like Skullgirls cuz it has nice art and music and the controls are simple and all this other stuff, but nothing I can say will ever get these people to try and learn it at any higher level. It's depressing when I ask my other friends what they did yesterday and they're like "I sat in training mode for 5 hours" versus the ones I introduced to Skullgirls who go weeks without touching it. Then I try to get the actual fighting game people into it, but none of them actually like it and it makes ME not want to play because they only time I get to play people is online with my shitty connection or once a year at Evo.
So, yeah, I don't know what's next. How do you take someone from "appreciating the game" to "competitive"? How do you make someone practice? Is it even possible? I just want a local scene, man ;_;

First off, Amen on the shitty connection thing, love not being able to see hit confirms.

As for learning, what I've experienced with Squigly and Eliza and a little "Extra Credits" video about fighters, is that the bar is pretty high, regardless of fighters.

I'm pretty much on the 'in it for the art' end of the spectrum but I got a lot better after Squigly came into beta because her tools were limited and made me learn what she actually had and I had time to adjust to her mechanics and such. (Although my Eliza is way worse since I couldn't find people online to play with.)

Most people don't really have the patience to learn the game at a competitive level, especially with fighters, you have to memorize a lot of shit such as priorities, hitboxes and common strategies, Skullgirls arguably makes this worse because a lot more characters are really viable and with different team and custom assists so even something as a uncommon assist can knock you down.

Marvel (Feel free to correct me on this.) has...maybe a handful of characters and some common strategies so it's a little easier to learn at a competitive level since you only really need to study the top tier characters.

Pokemon's even the same way, while it does leave a lot of room, people do tend to go for about 1 or 2 different sets and even then you can usually tell what the top-ranking Pokemon in it's respective tier can do.

So, I guess we need people to take baby steps with learning fighters, but Skullgirls does do a lot of good thing, such as Render said earlier, a good tutorial that actually informs you of what shit does and not just "do this combo", although I think it needs to get everyone to learn a simple combo so you can practice it and try online to work on your game.

so im just wondering when people will grasp the concept that having more people go to tourney will
1) not give any money to L0
2) Even if it shows off the game at a tourney it is still targeting a niche
3) this is not the thread about raising tourney turnout, read the first post if you are confused.

I think the general idea is that tournaments drum up a LOT of interest from people that are 1. already interested in Fighting Games and 2. willing to spend a lot of time and money on working to improve at it.

If you get a large tournament scene, you bring a lovely group of people that start to kinda "trickle down", if you will, into the less competitive groups.

I'm not saying that tournaments are the only way of supporting this game and helping it to grow, but its one of the better and more effective methods most people can do besides literally kidnapping people, sticking them in a small room devoid of anything except Skullgirls, and forcing them to play until they become @dekillsage .

when asked what the community can do, literally every time Lab Zero has said, "go to tournaments"

don't act like they don't fucking care or want it.

that's actually DOUBLY A SHIT THING TO SAY given all the fucking bullshit tournament organizers like me have to go through to get this game played at events. there are literally thousands of people who regularly have the chance and motivation to get involved in this game but won't because events snub us for low turnout or they simply think we're a joke for low turnout. going to tournaments is fun, brings in more players, makes us look better, and a lot more productive than drawing fanart or daydreaming about comic books.

yes i get it touraments are good but mutiple people suggesting the same thing is not helpful and if someone wants to go to a tourney and they dont its because its not appealing to go and most of us here already own the game and give support in other ways. This is sidetracking again but possibly instead of just saying go to tournament if you get a larger group of people to play say at a convention for fun then there is a larger possibility that at least a few to take it more seriously and come out to tournaments.

back to my point, how will this allow L0 to continue working together yes going to tournaments will help Skullgirls but if no new people buy the game how will that look for L0 or investors?

This is straight up about getting L0 money, investors, and stability so they can make whatever including sg.

so imo when its down to the bottom line if 500 buy the game and only 10 play often thats a win. vs beg 1 person who already bought the game to come look at people who already bought the game . yes yes build community but you cant feed a fam on community.

but yea @dapurplesharpie your point is true it helps. also this is a general reply some of what i said you didnt mention yourself.

since i have to explain it for you i will. A convention is generally considered more casual and they might have a game room or table to show various games for people passing by to play plus other activities. A tournament has casual play but is aimed to more serious competitors and it is strictly about the game/games. suprisingly people might not enjoy a tournament. so no games at a convention does not mean that it is a tounrnament.

As somebody who has gone to and run a shitload of conventions and tournaments, the difference between the 2 is that sometimes really large tournaments (like CEO and Evo) get called conventions and almost every convention also has a tournament taking place at it. I can understand if you've never been to a gaming convention, but don't claim that they don't exist.

It's still a moot point, given that there are literally thousands (counting competitors only, not spectators) of people at tournaments and gaming conventions who would purchase and spread interest of the game if we didn't have abysmal tournament attendance.

i never mentioned gaming conventions...just like i didnt mention woodcarving conventions, or womens health conventions, or engineering conventions. Yet they still exist. I assume you would make the conclusion yourself about the type of convention i am talking about with the description but yes good point
some tournaments use the term convention

Maybe we can make money drive/fundrasier thingy and donate the money to Lab Zero. (Skullgirls)
They're not really interested in getting anymore fan funding after the Indiegogo campaign. It'd be better if they got some legit backing, that was willing to stick with them and pay the awesome staff proper salaries.

all the fucking bullshit tournament organizers like me have to go through to get this game played at events

BTW, I think the time and effort people put into hosting tournaments (IRL or online) is always really appreciated by the players.

Ilu.

More people go to tournaments = higher tournament numbers = raised interest in the game = people buy the game to practice and participate in tournaments = increased popularity of the game

Going to tournaments helps the Skullgirls brand in all ways.

A tournament has casual play but is aimed to more serious competitors and it is strictly about the game/games. suprisingly people might not enjoy a tournament. so no games at a convention does not mean that it is a tounrnament.

People also go to tournaments for the casual experience. Lots of people attend just to meet and talk to people and play a few games. The time spent in actual tournament is far smaller than the time spent socially. Your excuse is lame.
