The Palettes of Skullgirls

I know that a big band skin is a reference to King De-de-de form Kirby, and that a Filia skin is a reference to a character from Adventure Time named Fiona. I apologize for the lack of pictures, I don't feel like posting them, but the characters can be found easily on google.
That's already a well known fact. The OP isn't as up to date as it should be, but if you go to the Skullgirls Wiki and check any of the character pages, it has a full list of all the references. They're all accurate, I'm pretty sure.

RED SKULL....ERRR RED BARON...ONE OF THEM
I do wonder if the Red palette is a reference, I think it might be a backer color and IGG backers like doing references but they also like original colors. We'll see.

#19 is a reference, eh?

oaJ6T5l.jpg

I enjoy a good puzzle, but I'm stumped. Perhaps the IGG backer is referencing their own character?
Some kind of Little Red Riding Hood /Huntsman allusion? Chicago Bulls or Atlanta Falcons, or hundred of other red and black sports squadrons? What do you think?

Whoever it is, it looks great.

And in case someone wants a closer look at the Ultimate Warrior and Kanji Tatsumi (IGG Backer's choice) colors:

Any idea what the reference is?

Oooh, let's take a look at Painwheel #21:
aabfe4f.jpg

It reminds me of... Painwheel #10:
ZicdzKv.jpg

(an original color, no reference)

Hurray for more blonde and purple/pink combos. I'm not sure if #21 is a reference. Maybe someone just wanted a cool Painwheel color?

I can't rule either direction because I don't think #21 was mentioned in the patch notes. Anyone have a guess for Beowulf 19 and Painwheel 21?

The Painwheel reminds me a bit of Ivy Valentine... but I'm not convinced (hair isn't purpley enough) could very well be original.

The purple makes me think of Nui's stolen Scissor Blade.

I'm really surprised beowulf has yamcha color scheme, vs a hercule/mr satan one. I Guess yamcha makes sense because wolves but Mr. Satan I feel matches better for obvious reasons.

Actually, I donated for that color.

as for the reference...

I agree. The first few posts could do with some updates. Maybe the missing pieces can be gathered together so it will be easy for a moderator to simply copy and paste.

A while ago I got a little manic and made a post for all the Eliza colors. Somewhat useful.

as for the reference...
Ooh! Thanks for that. The cool Painwheel colors have a reference now. For those of the SG wiki or the Shoryuken SG wiki floating by, it is:

Rozalin? (True Zenon) from Disgaea 2: Cursed Memories

FhnHtRJ.jpg

I know nothing of the Disgaea series (correct me if I'm being inaccurate), but it seems it is True Zenon in Rozalin's form so she is called "Rozalin?" (the question mark is important!).

Now, anyone want to come forward for Beowulf #19? Or is it another cool idea from EU03's imagination?

So, I noticed the penguin referee in the Yamcha Beo palette is purple/white.
JIbzuNH.png
It doesn't simply copy his main palette colors and I had no idea what reference it could be unless, hm, Frieza?

It looks to me that the referee's colors are taken mostly from Beowulf's own palette colors <Beowulf's hair=ref's skin/feathers, for example>, so while Yamcha!Beowulf's ref has Freeza-colored clothes, it's probably just a coincidence.

Im pretty sure this is " Mamá Lucha" from "Bodega Aurrera".

I guess you're right, Tech. As much as I liked the Frieza idea, in exactly 100% of palettes the dominant color on the penguin's jacket (the one that's also on his sleeves and pants) is identical to the color of Beowulf's wristbands.

So, an inconspicuous element of Beowulf's palette determines the main color of the penguin referee one. Clever.

I wonder if the Indiegogo backers are given some sort of color map to help them picture what the assist characters will look like with the colors they've picked.

I imagine not, withe the whole Princess Peach fiasco...

Either way, after how independent Albus and Horace's colors were from Eliza's I am a little surprised with how dependent Penguin Ref's coloration is on Beowulf's palettes.
That being said, he looks pretty damn good in most palette (my favorites are the one's where Beowulf has black hair... still hoping for a Blue Penguin Ref though.)

The penguin shows up for one thing, so it's not worth the trouble to assign new colours for it, as opposed to Albus and Horace which I have to make sure they are always distinct in each palette to avoid confusion.
Eliza's were not a minor thing given she is easily the largest on the colour budget, and that was something I was avoiding for Beowulf. We've gotten more ambitious with the colour mapping with each character, though not always for the best.

For Eliza we were given maps for Eliza, Sekhmet, Albus and Horace. As EU03 says though, that was a pretty special case.

That was insightful! Glad I asked! I'm actually really surprised I got 3 replies- each with a new bit of info!
Thanks guys!

Oh and @EU03 , just to be clear I was not complaining! Like I said the Ref looks amazing! (Batman Ref is my favorite.)
And I do agree there is no need to go overboard with the assist characters palettes- I didn't expect you guys to do something as in depth as Albus and Horace's references ever again.

But if you look at the Green Ranger palette, the ref is white, like a reference to the Green Ranger also being the White Ranger in the original series. So they could done something special, maybe...

Actually the Ref's suit is white, corresponding to Beowulf's wristbands.
His skin is black, corresponding to Beowulf's hair. Again, it's probably coincidence.

So, about the Grendel arms.

I reckon Jax simply has a giant version of his own robotic arm. As for Alex, am I guessing correctly the gigan arm is a reference to Gill?

Not sure if it's intentional or not, but I like that Robo-Fortune's Motoko Kusanagi palette is the 9th one.

Because Section 9. :PUN:

Sooo, for the purpose of preservation, here's all of Robo-Fortune's palettes...as seen on Meat Fortune, through the timeout sillyness =P

It feels like there should be a regular Fortune palette for her, but that would be WAY too confusing...
Or at least I think it would be... but I must admit I even mess up my Filias with my Fukuas.

I get what you're saying with Fillia/Fukua, but you can see actual differences between both characters, rather than color. And the voices are distinguishable, too. It would make a lot of sense to do that, in my opinion.

#19 Beowulf's reference may still be a mystery, but today's cool new palette is different.
Patch Notes said:
- Palette 22! Original.

Hc99NXj.jpg

Snowy white wolf pelt, sleeveless Egyptian blue sweater vest with amaranth diamonds, and gray slacks. The elbow pads and fingerless gloves lend a tough edge to the red, white, and blue business-casual set.

And with that, here's the newest color's referee

I love that he has so many dark skinned palettes.
Agreed. I think he might have more than Eliza actually.

Although if you remember Eliza had her tacky tan palette turned into pale Ragyou, and her one that resembled Hilda from Under Night In Birth became a dark-skinned original palette.
So what I'm getting at is some of these might change a bit. Obvious, I know, but it is a good thing to keep in mind.

He's really surprising me with how many original palettes he's wound up with (at the moment) after his first bunch were mostly spot-on references to iconic characters.
