The Smash Bros Discussion Thread

Can someone explain to me what the fuck an amiibo is and what it's supposed to do?
They're like little figures or something that let you do something in game?

amiibos are little plastic figurines with a NFC (Near Field Connection) chip inside of them.
Below the D-Pad on a Wii U tablet, there's a little pad that has an image of two screens on top of each-other with another NFC chip in it, and when the two come into contact, it loads up whatever it is set to load for that game.
For Smash specifically, it creates an AI opponent that you can train to play like you do. It's really fun, and nothing in the world is more satisfying then turning to a freind and telling them that they are so bad at Smash that my stupid robot could beat them.
They also do shit in other games (Weapons and materials in Hyrule Warriors, costumes in Mario Kart, etc.) with more support planned for them in the future.

Thanks MMan but Horseman already covered it for me.
Thanks Horseman, it sounds really dumb but I never tried it so what do I know.

I like 'em. Their function in Smash 4 is really neat, and the better looking figures look great on a desk or shelf. Plus the mere concept of a real life Smash Bros. trophy is really...ahem...appealing.

Finally got my hands on a Wii U and Smash. My muscle memory from using the Gamecube Controller since Melee is screwing me over lol. The Pro Controller fits better in my hands, but the buttons and stuff are spaced better on the Gamepad. Hopefully I find a control scheme that works, cause it feels like whenever I change the buttons around, I keep getting them mixed up with the previous control scheme.

Also, they are really, REALLY tough at level 50. One almost won a tourney, if I recall, and One chaotic man brought one to my college and it kept racking up kills in 8 player Smash and team battles.

I actually would love to see Amiibo cockfights, a in Aiibo tourneys to see which ones would reign supreme.

That'd be pretty interesting to see, actually. They should totally do that as a side tournament somewhere.

It placed 16th iirc.
It's worth noting that they have a lot higher stats than a normal person at level 50 even without feeding it equips. That's just how it works. So it does kind of cheese its way to victory which sucks a bit.

My Kirby amiibo likes to grab a lot, and has an obsession over spikes, which is just so darn cute.

On the other hand, it also has some weird fascination for copying other player's abilities and just using that ability all the damn time.

Now I want to get a Captain Falcon amiibo, then do nothing but Falcon Punches and taunt with "show me your moves!" after every landed punch. Then when they're offstage, always go for a knee and use up taunt after every knee KO.

Luma gives her a very large pool of easy links to rack up damage quickly, both she and Luma have very strong kill moves with all of their smashes, and Launch Star is also a pretty strong recovery move. She can also break grabs really easily, and considering that, like, 90% of combos in Smash 4 start with a grab, that's no small bonus.
I'd like to input that I have never once grabbed Rosalina only to have Luma hit me out of the grab. I've played tons of Rosalinas online and offline and haven't ever have this happen to me. And I think I know why.

I aaaalways pummel at least once before I throw somebody. Just an extra 2% to add onto 8% with the throw can go a long way. In doing the pummel, the hitbox of the headbutt hits the luma (if it is summoned to Rosalina) and puts it into stun frames. By the time it recovers, I would have already been able to throw Rosalina without a hitch. I can then proceed to beat the little bugger into oblivion while Rosa is recovering from across the stage.

...It just occurred to me that, thanks to the VAs, Squigly stole Female Robin's voice from Eliza and Sekhmet. =P

Generally speaking, I find it a misplay to pull Luma towards you. The best place for Luma to be is directly opposite Rosa, so if someone goes for Luma, you can punish with Rosa, and if someone goes for Rosa, then Luma punishes them.

I can then proceed to beat the little bugger into oblivion while Rosa is recovering from across the stage.

This sort of cements that you're playing bad RosaLuma players. Luma still recives inputs while Rosa is in hitstun, so while the throwing animation is going on, Luma can still hit you.

Off the topic of Rosas and Lumas, I'm going to be hosting a SSF2 lobby (The flash game, not Street Fighter) in about a half- hour, feel free to join in if you want to.

But where do I get SSF2?
Right here, strangely bolded citizen! It's the first one on the list. Download for your respective OS.

But what about netplay? WHAT ABOUT NETPLAY!?
No need to fret, because I've got you covered there, too!
Simply go to this website here, click on 'Register for an account', and follow instructions as they come. I can personally attest that they won't fill your e-mail with spam messages or donkey porn, so no need to fear on that front.
From there, simply go to the 'Online' mode, input your username and password that you registered, and away you go!
Once the lobby goes live, I'll make a followup post with it's name and the password to get in.
See you there maybe possibly probably not : (

pretty sure that in the most recent patch luma can't do that anymore, at least luma has more stats where it can't stuff.

Tried to go in, but I only stayed in the waiting room for a sec before the game froze

Might it have something to do with the latency, or is my connection just too sucky ;_;

I was having a similar problem earlier today, and reseting the game fixed it for me.
Don't worry about it if you can't get in, though. It's no big deal.

That's really dumb though. I play mario, Dr. Mario, Peach, Bowser and Bowser Jr. and Luma never poses a threat to me in the slightest because I can throw fireballs/turnips into Luma stunning it (and the stun period is at least 60 frames) giving me time to go in and give it a nice upsmash or dash attack. Luma is useless against the characters and strategies I play, so having Luma close would be her only option.

I realize that, but what you don't understand is that Luma's time in hitstun is more than enough time for me to throw Rosalina. And with the Mario's and Peach, the throw itself (namely the backthrows) damages Luma too! Luma is nothing but a fly to me and I'd really like to see a really good Rosa player If all the ones online aren't "good" enough.

I did it. Headgear was a boring grind, but whatever. I'm happy that for the first time I can say I "completed" a Smash Bros game.

There are technically 2 trophies left (according to the trophy boxes), those being the panther dude from Star Wolf (who randomly appears in the shop) and some mega man trophy. Not gonna stress over those though, I'll get them when I get them. I'm just happy I could do this at all.

Reward for clearing the board is in the picture.

It's in the text, not the image!

what's the best way to grind for the wrench stuff in the wii u version? i asked this before but since you actually did that you prolly have a good idea of what to do.

I would think grinding in the 3ds version and sending your Mii's over, unless the hats don't transfer if they're not unlocked?

Custom Moves: All Star Hard with the character you need moves for.

Headgear:
-Master Orders tickets with a smash logo reward (Very Hard or Intense only). These only appear so often so it's not exactly reliable to just sit doing nothing but this.
-Crazy Orders tickets with a smash logo reward. Use custom equipment to guarantee you can keep going as long as possible. I recommend attack badges/vampire badges/invincibility on first strike badges. Due to the random nature of crazy orders this is pretty luck based though and you might not get many smash logo tickets. And you have the chance to lose them, so be careful.
-Target Blast with a Mii. I've also heard you have to play a 1P mode with a mii immediately beforehand, so just in case I always started All Star then immediately suicided as a mii before heading into Target Blast. When you do target blast you can just reset until a custom wrench appears, then get that and pray. I'd say you get a hat/outfit about 1/8 of the time. It's not exactly a good method, but it is a lazy method and you can do other things while doing this since Target Blast doesn't require much attention. I always did Stage 1.
-No matter what you do this will take really fucking long.

Oh, and do headgear first. You will get a lot more custom moves in the process of looking for headgear than vice versa. And before doing either of these do all the challenges which are, you know, actually challenges. Save the grinding ones for last

I would think grinding in the 3ds version and sending your Mii's over, unless the hats don't transfer if they're not unlocked?

That just lets you use that mii in its current state until you disconnect the 3DS, it doesn't unlock anything.

The fact that this is surprising saddens me.
Props to Awkward Zombie for literally being the only artist on the internet who can draw Armorless Samus correctly.

Oh wait,
Fox totally has
robot feet.
Almost forgot but I didn't.

The hound-legs are in fact amputated implants as well. Fox switches between the two when he pleases.

It's all apart of my upcoming fanfic shipping Falco and Crazy Hand. S'gonna be good.

I'm afraid of how the switchable legs are going to factor into that...

Dudes. I really hate when people just purposely kill themselves. It is so unappealing.

Oh my goodness, I save all my ragequits. They always put a big grin on my face.

I don't know what my opponents were thinking because sometimes they just do it randomly. We'd be evenly matched but they'd just jump off the stage. I dunno. Especially during Sudden Deaths. I guess I get all the wet blankets.

Edit: And the spamming Warios! All they do is spam bikes! Is that an actual strategy or something? o.O

This is a lag strat; Bike moves through shields, and it requires timing to shield-grab or otherwise punish it, so when you are under lag it's more or less safe shield damage. Not too good locally, though.

So, remember Harmony of Heroes, the awesome Smash Bros. fan-album? Expansion pack time!

Harmony of Heroes: Final Smash is an extra few remixes pulled from songs in Smash Bros 3D/U. Remixes include Live and Learn, Good Egg Galaxy, Duck Hunt, Gaur Plains, and more
Get it, it's good and free.

If you play Villager you can stop the spam permanently if you pocket the bike after Wario jumps off. Wario can't pull out another bike once Villager pockets his.

Praise be to the Villager, as He can disable Wario's most annoying tactic of "flowchart my way to winning by doing nothing but the Bike"

Wario's bike is his heart and soul
one time in team For Glory
i was Wario and I got another Wario as my teammates
and he knew what we had to do
we biked the entire match
and while the other team may have "won"
we triumphed in spirit
praise be to the bike

Aaaaaaaaaaaaaamen!

You also can't pocket pikmin.
Which is weird, because Rosalina can get rid of them with her Gravity thing.
