Video Game Horror

I dunno if you'll find it scary but I know The Grudge involves ghosts.

Anyway, I know the horror in itself probably hasn't aged well, but I still hold a soft spot for Eternal Darkness. It's still the only horror genre work I actually like for how it is/was scary, and that's coming from a Nintendo game!

We've already seen The Grudge, it sucked.

As a source of reference I considered Insidious and The Shining to be good horror flicks.
 
I'm asking for movies to watch with my sister.
I know that this thread is for video games but there's no "Horror Movie Thread" so I came here.

However I will put Clock Tower on my list of games to play.
 
The Thing (1982) is the only film coming to mind at the moment even though there’s better choices out there if you’re looking for things that will actually frighten and unnerve you.

I’m generally more likely to find documentaries more unsettling these days than things presented in a purely fictional world since there's at least some chance of the threats they depict existing in reality.

That's actually the problem I have when looking up horror movies, a lot of the highly rated movies on the internet are about psychopaths and murderers and diseases and stuff. Those don't scare me or my sister at all because we're huge bad-asses and we're not afraid of anything real. Like we were watching The Collector the other day and all we were doing was yelling at the characters on screen about how stupid they are, that movie was awful by the way.

We like spooky stuff, ghosts and apparitions, psychological manifestations, things that aren't real but are impossible to fight if they were real.
 
Poltergeist is horror movie to watch in family :P or maybe the first REC.Like you guys said is hard to find good ones nowadays.Btw,some of you guys already watched begotten?I heard about this one but still need watch. About documentaries, any recommendation?
You guys must play at least The Witch House, without spoilers i just can say that the end is great.

Well, it's not exactly horror per se, but Resolution is an indie thriller film that might be up your alley. It's an intentional subversion of indie thriller cliches, which is, at the least, a refreshing take on the genre. It starts off pretty slow, but it gets much more interesting towards the second half.

For this maybe the movie Audition,a horror like "Saw".I think is kinda impossible for old people feel damn scary about movies nowadays, the best content about this kind of movie was supernatural stuff, most people years ago believed in this stuff but now with this whole communication between people and places and cameras in every corner is more easy judge believe or not on this ( never stop dream! :P ).
Oh.while typing this make remember a cool story that read some time ago, of course i suppose when you do this kind of stuff you are alone in home,no lights etc,right?Atmosphere is half of the magic. Better wait some days until every requisites in order and have fun than just read/watch and "meeeh.this sucks."

OK, in that case no. For actual scary stuff, I second the recommendation of Audition, although it's not for the weak of stomach. I've also heard good things about Poltergeist.

I'll put Poltergeist on the list though. Oldie but a Goldie, I hope it ages well.
 
The two scariest games I've ever played were Yume Nikki and The Path. After playing either of those games I couldn't sleep without leaving the lights on. For about a month each.

In the Mouth Madness features all of the things you mentioned, but the acting is pretty god damn horrible.

Aside from being sleep deprived enough to start wondering if fake Colonel Campbell really was talking to me or quitting the original Silent Hill at pretty much exactly this point, video games haven’t really made me worry about dieing without some sort of gameplay penalty. A big mound of mangled flesh can only be so scary when all it can really do is send you back to the loading screen for a few seconds. Lots of people these days talk about how bad old survival horror games were because the player risked loosing a significant amount of progression or items if they died, but more detailed models and texture work usually aint shit without that to stand on.

Having just watched it, outside of some of the special effects, it has aged pretty well, mostly because it appeals to the fear of losing one's child to unknown forces. There's terror present after about a third of the way through the movie, although I think the last 20 minutes or so of the movie was a tad overdone. Overall still one of the best horror films I've seen in a while.
 
Maybe Japanese horror movies can give you what you're asking for? I'm no expert but most of them are about supernatural stuff.
By the way did you guys know they're making an Ao oni movie?
Too sad they show the demon in the trailer already. Gets off all the thriller :/

As for horror videogames, I like SCP: Containment breach. I don't play it in a long time but I'm fan of the SCP association, their writing is really neat.
The game is kinda like Amnesia, but it does have puzzles you can solve to put most of the monsters in their place.

I also like "Still Life"(insanely hard) and "I have no mouth and I most scream"; they're more thriller than horror tho

Try Fingerbones. It's not exactly long or anything... it's just that its little story is truly disturbing.
 
I don't know if anyone's played the Hat in Time alpha, but the mansion level in that game was spooky 2 the max.
 
A very good side-scrolling game with horror elements is Limbo. It has very creative puzzles and great atmosphere, but it's way waaay waaaaay too short. I say play it, but do whatever you can to pay as little money as possible for it because I beat the game within a few hours.

Earthbound?Nintendo game?spooky?I heard about gygas, but didnt knew it that is a spooky one.
 
Among everything else it's famous for, EarthBound is VERY well known for how the rest of the game is happy-go-lucky all-ages modern-day-Dragon-Quest, and then you get to the final boss and OH JESUS WHAT THE FUCK IS THIS I DON'T WANT THIS IT'S IN MY NIGHTMARES NOW.
 
I hate playing/watching horror anything when I'm with anyone else. It utterly kills any of the fear and suspense I get from the experience.

Dead Space is a great example of something that's shit your pants scary in some places when played alone at night in the dark, but just a fun monster shooter when there's friends around.

Paranormal Activity (the movie) is also really unnerving when you watch it alone in the dark just before you go to bed. Watch it with anyone else and it's a boring and generally awful movie. (Shame that they changed the ending too. The original ending was sooo much better)

So apparently Hideo Kojima and Guillermo del Toro are teaming up to make a new Silent Hill.
This new game by the name of Silent Hills is a first person survival horror game, something unique to the franchise.
Could this save Silent Hill? I think it can, especially because of motherfucking Norman Reedus!

I used to play Clocktower on the PS1 back when it was new. I had originally thought that the idea of a guy with a giant pair of scissors was comical. Boy, that sure changed when I first encountered Scissorman. That creep is scary, and the music just drives that fact home.
 
I liked the Silent Hills video @Denizen posted, but I only just found out that it's going to be a first-person game and I don't know how I feel about that. It will be a unique approach for the Silent Hill series, but I seem to notice that there have been a LOT of first-person horror games lately (Don't know who popularized it. Maybe one of the Condemned games or Penumbra/Amnesia) and I'm not sure how it will stand out from the crowd. Still, I hope this experiment will turn out well. Is it officially confirmed as first-person? SH4 had some moments in the 1st-person as well, but they were only a small part of the game. Maybe the new one will be SH4 done right (I personally disliked the 4th game)?

What about Five Nights at Freddies? Its an inde game that has gotten popular on Tumblr, the idea is youre working at a Chck E. Cheese type place as the night guard. No too bad till youre noticing that the animtronics are looking at you through the camera. And then theyre coming to get you. Only way to survive, keep an eye on them from 12AM-6AM, you only have a limited amount of power and if it goes out....well freddie is coming for you. That game has gotten popular that even theres actual Tumblr accounts of the animatronics which has terrified everyone that finds out about them. Its on indedb and desura. Currently awaiting for steam port and everyone thats not super chicken to play is in super support of it.

Gonna be honest, I was digging FNaF, really do still dig it, just not as much.
Apparently the theory that it's just a haunting and the Anamatronics are possessed by dead kids.
Which, takes a lot of coolness out of it.

What the heck are you talking about, SS2 had all of that too! You only ever have a living human being acknowledge your existence face-to-face once in the entire game, the rest is you alone in a ship full of horrible monsters that never stop coming.
 
Dammit guys, you got me. I watched/heard of most of the stuff that was posted here, but Five Nights at Freddy's actually scared me. I'm usually a total wuss when it comes to horror stuff but I can keep a straight face for most things since I can expect it. Not with this game.

It doesn't help that Markiplier's LP of it kept me on edge most of the time... It was great!
