Platinum Games

So some early reviews of Korra have come in. I generally don't bother with looking at reviews, but decided to take a peek...

EEEEEEEUUUUUUGGGGHHH. They're pretty rough.

The primary gripes appear to be lack of loyalty to the source material, poor story, and poor cutscenes. Lucky for me, I don't have enough loyalty to Korra to have to worry about those ruining the game for me.

Furthermore, none of the reviews went into nearly enough detail about the combat, so none of these reviews help me, as that is all I actually care about.

I'll still gonna buy it, but I'm going in with lower expectations.

The steam user reviews are all really good, so I don't know.
From what I've seen it's a 50/50 split between "pretty decent for 15 bucks, I had fun" and "Worst game of all time 1/10."

@juju_for_president

That mention of them leaving out the gameplay is, for me, a sign to ignore the reviews. They're most likely done by fanboys. Very try hard fanboys. Also, how exactly did they say it wasn't true to the source material? Because if I remember, the game is supposed to be set in between the end of Book 2, and the start of Book 3.

There's also the issue of where these reviews come from, because right now... at least for me, most sites are on notice.

All in all, give the game a buy anyway, because as soon as I get a new TV and some money, that's what I'm doing.

Superman 64, Robocop for the Xbox, Ride to Hell: Retribution, Mindjack, Aliens: Colonial Marines, Day One: Garry's Incident, E.T. during the Atari days...

But who's counting all the games that actually are shit for the sake of posterity and future generations?? Not me!!

Right now I'm still a bit unsure of its quality, but $15 isn't much of a gamble so I might get it anyway.

That was hyperbole, I hope no one's actually calling it the worst game of all time.

Obligatory mention about how IGN gave God Hand a 3.0 review.

I mean it's probably not the same case here but I can't help but draw a parallel

OH YEAH. THANKS FOR REMINDING ME.

IGN, YOU GUYS ARE FUCKING STUPID, GODHAND IS A GOOD GAME. YOU'RE FULL OF SHIT, AND EVERYONE KNOWS IT NOW.

If people can somehow call five different games "Game of the Year" in the same year (I don't think that's even exaggeration, is the sad part) then the opposite is most definitely possible.

Remember, the same year that Ride to Hell came out, Yaiba (the zombie Ninja Gaiden game with some NMH influence) was called the worst game of the year by reviewers, even though Ride to Hell had came out previously. Now, I haven't seen footage of Yaiba, yet, but I don't think that Yaiba can be that bad compared to, say, Ride to Fucking Hell.

wasn't Yaiba, like, hyped to hell and back though

It was also not the game people wanted to see after 3 tarnished the reputation of the franchise.

Opinions don't factor in here? I mean fuck, you want everyone to unanimously declare one game "game of the year"?
Until we get a unified, intelligent award show "game of the year" is going to be a term used to describe pretty much every game that managed to get above an 80 in metacritic and a bunch of games that didn't by someone, somewhere. Best game of all time is always going to be subjective as fuck and you get to deal with it.
Worst game of the year tends to be both a much less contested category and a significantly more subjective category since it tends to be "what was the glitchiest most unplayable piece of shit shoveled onto the marketplace this year" (or in the case of duke nukem "what was the most disappointing game this year") rather than an actual debate on merit. There might be some people who consider korra to be the worst game of all time or the year but they probably haven't played very many awful games, frankly.

Both of you have a point.

Still staying as a counterargument, though, Ride to Hell.

there's also like
a difference between a game being bad
a game being a disappointment
and a game being bad AND a disappointment

You kind of missed the point of my analogy. I was drawing a comparison to the fact that people would throw a term around constantly to the point of it losing a meaning, similar to how people like to throw the term "worst game ever" around to the point where it loses meaning. To me at least. Maybe I did a bad job of making it clear; maybe that was my fault. :/

I really want Platinum Games to hold off making character action games for a while and make a spiritual successor to Okami...
tumblr_inline_mog5ejuxUE1rcrs2u.gif

I doubt they'll just stop making them though...

you should go ask Hideki Kamiya on twitter and see what he thinks about that idea
I would but the blocking waves Kamiya puts out are too strong.

why even pay attention to those kinds of sites
you should take it from people that actually play video games, after all

I'm pretty sure God Hand's IGN review was the wake-up call.

I'm not listening to gaming websites for this reason. When I learned about it, and then saw and experienced that God Hand was actually a pretty good game, I was like, "Yep. Everyone in journalism is a pile of shit, and this is the proof."

Isn't there, like, an embarrassing amount of misspellings in that review that have still gone uncorrected?

Ruin said:

Watch this be the one thing he doesn't block from his Twitter, and actually responds to.

If you think that review's bad, then go take a look at the gaming journalism thread. Then, let the salt flow through you. And after that, channel the salt into wrecking some more Doughgoos or Affinities or cyborgs or Oni or demon gorillas.

I'm aware of how unreliable review sites like IGN are, especially about games like this. It just concerned me just how much negativity there was towards the game from a couple places.

Like I said, I'm totally going to buy Korra, regardless of what reviewers are saying about it. At worst, I don't end up liking it, but I've supported Platinum. At best, those reviewers are idiots and I love the game. Either way, since my expectations were apparently high enough that even criticism from notably unreliable sources was enough to worry me, it is probably a good idea to lower them.

At least until Bayo 2 comes out <squee>

well, at the very least he might link me his twitlog.
EDIT:
because he will

you could phrase the question in a different way like
"Is there any game that you previously worked on that you're interested in a making a sequel or successor too?"
and he'll probably say like Wonderful 102 but that's an answer at least

I'm just happy to see he would be interested.

but I just want it bad....

so how is the game?

I thought it was already out! I'M CONFUSED!

Ruin said:

Am I the only one that thinks 202 is a much better name for a W101 sequel? I mean, 102 just sounds so underwhelming. Like, it sounds like they've only added or changed one thing about the game.

i would go bigger and go with Wonderful 1001, tbh
that way you don't need to lose the alliteration that came with "Wonderful one-oh-one"

It's already out in Japan, and it has dual audio.

so how is the game?

It gets surprisingly hard really quick. When going against mecha tanks I honestly felt like I was playing Dark Souls.

My main gripe with the game so far is that the camera can be weird sometimes and the fact that it is currently unclear to me how to, in the most efficient way, initiate quick time sequences against enemy benders.

I really hope the speedrunning community works on this game. I wanna see it broken.

EDIT: Apparently, this was posted in the wrong thread, somehow.

it happens sometimes. don't worry about it. :)

Does anyone know when Korra is supposed to be added to 360? The release date was for today, but it's almost 10:00 p.m, and the game still isn't out.

Edit: I think The Legend of Korra has been delisted or something from 360. I managed to find it after quite a bit of searching, but when I selected the game, it game me an error message. When I tried to pin it and do it from there, it said that the game is not available, and removed itself from my pins.

What the hell, Microsoft?

Yeah, I figured someone else'd have this problem.
http://marketplace.xbox.com/en-US/Product/The-Legend-of-Korra/66acd000-77fe-1000-9115-d80258411447
This is a link to the 360 version
https://store.xbox.com/en-US/Xbox-O...7-d488-469e-b2a0-3a2d7a0f8076?cid=majornelson
And this is a link to the One version. Just sign into your Microsoft account and buy it using the website. That's what I did.

'Course, the game might be fixed on the marketplace by now, so I don't know how helpful I'm really being :\

@8-Bit Templar Thank you, but as you guessed, it was... "fixed"... on XBLA by the time I woke up.

That being said, I don't think Microsoft was quite done laughing at my expense, as after it FINALLY went up a full day late, I tried to download the demo, and despite the demo being less than 2 Gigs, it was stuck at 0% for about 20 minutes. I was actually right about to post that the game was still busted (and complain quite a bit more than I am now) when I checked, and it was at 1%.

However, as of typing, it's been about 15-20 minutes, and it is only at 3%.

It's probably on Microsoft. I haven't heard anyone on PS3, PS4, and PC complaining about this thus far, so it's more than likely on Microsoft.

As of now, the download is at 22% :(

"Come on Naga, no time to waste!"

You sure about that

I usually take a walk for downloads that take forever
You should go to the park and stare at the splendor of nature
You would instantly be reminded of earthbending then go back to check

It would then be at 18% somehow

And then after he cusses out his Xbox for somehow LOSING progress, it will then make a frowny face and go down to -75%.

He will be so traumatized be these events, he will spend a good majority of his life glaring at his Kinect shouting, "IX-BAX!! IX-BAX!!"
