The Smash Bros Discussion Thread

I don't understand people's obsession with video game character sexuality......especially when it has nothing to do with the actual character.
I, personally, blame Tumblr.
Who knows.

Kirvy?
Is that the porn knock-off of Kirby?

I was on mobile and also incredibly tired.

I just find it funny that an androgynous creature with no discernible genitalia would have not only a gender that matches the human species', but a preference towards the opposite gender.
And to be fair, that's probably what Nintendo intended, but I still find it funny.

Tumblr can be blamed for anything.

It's probably because the characters whose sexuality actually is apart of their character are so few or so grossly presented, that people of the LGBTA+ group have to resort to pretending/applying sexualities to characters who have unclear, unstated, or unspecified sexualities or genders to feel comfortable about themselves.

But does that mean applying gender/sexuality to characters like Kirby? Hahahaha NO.

I don't really care, but the gender of a character is a pretty big thing to not know.

Sexuality isn't and shouldn't be treated like a character trait in my opinion. If a character is homosexual, good for them. It's like saying being female is a defining character trait. Sure, it's something important to know, but it doesn't define you.

Most of the time it is as simple as people being genuinely curious about a character's sexuality or gender.

I meant "apart of their character" as just kinda there. Like it's just stated to be canon off hand or something. Simply put, there's just not many LGTBA+ characters in media and video games (That are presented healthily at least.) I'm not saying being gay should be a character trait, I'm saying that the amount of characters who have been confirmed to be gay are so staggeringly low in quantity that it causes people to start applying their sexualities onto characters that haven't been said to not be.

Er, I mean: *puts on down with cis t-shirt*

On the topic of that, why are developers so afraid of putting gay characters in their video games? There's a decently sized community behind it they're basically ignoring by acting like they don't exist.

I think we're veering off from Smash Bros.

why is it Super Smash Bros.?
Why not Super Smash People?????

I actually thought the name Smash Bros. was a reference to Mario Bros. being the staple franchise of Nintendo.

Huh, come to think of it, instead of finding new names to stick on the end like Super Smash Bros *blank*, they could find new names for the Bros part of the name. ...Maybe, I'm having difficulty coming up with names that could replace it.

I knew someone was going to say this, but I doubt Nintendo would dare to make a character that isn't heterosexual.
Birdo, and Vivian from the Paper Mario games is a guy too.

People are sexual. People like to imprint themselves onto fictional characters. Fictional characters become sexual.

wow heaven forbid we have head canons about a characters sexuality

they are not guys, they are girls they just happen to be trans

So how about them Smash Bros. games, of which they are family friendly and all-ages
nobody plays that game, also is mewtwo still all over for glory?

I swear I never run into any of these repeating characters everyone complains about, maybe matchmaking just thinks I'm too scrubby >.>

But, uh, I haven't seen any Mewtwo's on For Glory, apart from when I play the character myself.

Too many Falcons.
Too many Links.
Too many Marios.

Not enough Robins on Roll Reading Simulator 2014

And of course as soon as I say this I run into one.

Yellow Peach is already in the game

I'm really glad that it's never been stated that the Smash Ballot is not based purely on popularity. Because you know. You know. You just KNOW people are out there, visiting the site, by the hour, voting every day, every single day until the deadline in October, for that one character. Or someone from 4chan just programmed a bot.

I also still like the massive hypocrisy in the entire Smash fanbase when it comes to newcomers. Constantly complaining about an overflux of Mario and Fire Emblem reps or clones, but'll still try to vote 'em in anyway.

Man fuck you.

Just kidding I love you. But your opinions are another level of shit.

fixed

also remember when yellow peach was more than yellow peach, it looked a lot more like Daisy in Melee. They could have made her an alt costume, or even like a clone

like a clone
Is for this type of reasoning that we can't have nice things.

Jk, but i don't think more clones would be well received.

XD
I guess so.
Then I suppose it's safe to assume that somewhere on the internet there's a raging queen pikachu being sassy at it's trainer for being cis, white, male scum....

What ever happened to taking simple things at face value: Kirby is a cute squishy pink thing that steals powers by inhaling enemies/objects. That's all we need to know. Does Kirby have a gender? Probably, but it changes nothing important about the character or the series. If it was something like a literary debate where an ambiguous characters' gender could change how a story or the actions taken in it are interpreted then I'm all for a little back and forth. But for Kirby those argument just suck
:PUN:
Ahhhhh......
Puns are mewsic to my ears

People sexualize fictional characters because they envy their fantasy world being so wonderful and fantastic while ours is (while still very wonderful and fantastic) not nearly as wonderful or fantastic and so subconsciously desire to drag said characters down to a level that they can relate to.

Hence, sexualizing Kirby, internet comics depicting characters doing "every day things", and rule 34.

I was browsing for custom stages today when I found one based off Filia. Who here dun did it.

Haha... HAHAHA...

This isn't actually proof of a confirmation for Shantae in Smash I just felt like laughing

It sounds more like Matt challenging Reggie to a match,
but like whatever gives you hope, man.

Well I'm just glad that Shantae's at least recognized by Nintendo enough to be advertised as their flagship (har har) indie title.

BETTER GET THAT BROOM READY MIGHTYBOX, BECAUSE I'M AS CRAZED FOR SHANTAE AS THEY COME. HERE'S A MOVESET IDEA.
The idea is that her genie transformations aren't her special attacks like people expect. Rather, her smash attacks.

What makes the genie aspect a little interesting is that in Shantae: Risky's Revenge, you don't do specific moves for each transformation. Rather, you wait for a specific dance animation to come up, then release the button to transform into each respectable animal. (Elephant, Monkey, Mermaid)

Each character in Smash has a specific animation when charging each of their smash attacks. Using the dance as the charge animation (And dropping the part where specific points in the dance are only used for specific transformations for gameplay reasons) means Shantae could have the same charge animation for every smash attack.

So she does her dance, she's flashing yellow, and a poof of genie smoke (instead of seizure inducing screen flashes) and she charges out as an elephant as her f-smash, claws up in the air as a harpy in her u-smash, and... I don't know flops around like a fish as her mermaid form? (And maybe, just maybe, let her do a back smash where she charges backwards as the elephant, rear-ending an opponent. Heh.) Or use other transformations from the gameboy color game, or the new one or whatever.

This gives her an unpredictability factor and an uncanny uniqueness to her, but not to a game breaking degree. Smash attacks are commonly used as quick, damaging attacks to rocket opponents away. Most of the time a person will recognize a charge animation when they've already been hit by the smash. She would just have a very interesting edge in the times where charging a smash attack can be called for. Or create new situations on her own with the possibility of a back smash attack toppled on top of u-smash, d-smash, and f-smash.

Also it gives room for her special moves being the floating spike balls, flamethrowers, lightning clouds, yadda yadda. Or the moves from Pirate's Curse, you know.

I think'd it be neat for her if she actually gets in. I mean I did put the idea into the smash ballot already (obviously not as detailed).
