Shin Megami Tensei (including Persona, Devil Summoner, Devil Survivor, and all that good stuff)

Obviously they didn't master the Matador Social Link of the Death Arcana.

Someone complained about SMT not having social links and calendar?

SERIOUSLY?!

It's usually just trolls or sometimes even a cleverly done joke thread, but then sometimes you get that one person who is serious about it. It's more excusable when people ask if they've played Persona if they'll enjoy another part of the series because they're at least trying to research before buying.

Personally it also almost feels like Persona still has the balls to have the end of the world looming over in the plot, but never all the way enough to actually let it happen.
I mean
fucking SMT 1 had the world end twice in the same plot.

Well in Nocturne the entirety of reality is what's at stake.

And in one ending you get to be the one to destroy it. Congratulations, pawn of Lucifer!

The entirely of reality ending is nothing next to Kanji renovating your ass kappa

Ha, but for realz, the plots of SMT are darker than midnight chocolate. Not that that's a bad thing.

Yeah I think Persona in general has a very slightly more optimistic look on things.
While SMT is far more cynical and bleak.

Even Persona 2?

The main difference is in the "name"

All of the "Shin Megami Tensei" games are more "world-centric". the main objective and consequences reflects into the world/planet/reality/universe. With that, more "generic" moral dillemas gets proeminence over characters personalities (Alignments'/factions' ideals are more important than who spreads and follows them)

The "Megami Ibunroku" games (that includes persona and devil survivor), are more "character-centric". Most of the conflict is within the human heart. the world bay be at risk, but that will eventually be traced back to a person's trauma or ideal. and that experience, together with the character's personality and backstory will be more prevalent than what will happen to "the world".

Devil Survivor (or at least, the first one), is actually a lot closer to the mainline series thematically and story wise though.

it's an hybrid... and a darn good one.

Still, I don't like how things turned out in Devil Survivor 2... too "organised" compared to the chaos in the first. now you even have a special MIB-like force running around...

It's also the first SMT that isn't Persona to get an anime

I really didn't like how Devil Survivor 2 turned. It felt like they were trying to make things a little too lighthearted for a world slowly becoming engulfed by a dark void and the fate system felt out of place. Persona 4's lighthearted tone could be excused because it took place over a year and they had more freedom to have fun.

But in DeSu 2 it's kind of hard to do that when you only have a week to save the world.

It's also the first SMT that isn't Persona to get an anime

Not really! Devil Children got an anime and if you want to count it, the Digital Devil Story novels that inspired the whole series had an anime too. Well, an OVA at least.

I haven't played DeSu 2 yet, but Devil Survivor Overclocked is probably my favorite game in the series on the basis that I love strategy games, it's still hard as balls, it has that foreboding atmosphere to it like in classic Shin Megami Tensei, and choosing law or chaos over neutral doesn't automatically mean you're a horrible person. That's something that bugged me about a lot of the Shin Megami Tensei games that use the Law v. Chaos theme.

Close enough, really.
Not enough sir! Seeing how they predate the persona/DeSu anime by quite few years.

Anyhow, in terms of my favorite games it would probably have to be Persona 3, Devil Summoner 2, Devil Survivor and the Digital Devil Saga series.

Oh yeah we're also getting that Persona 3 movie.
Let's see what canon name they apply to the Protag.
Maybe we'll see him or his fake (again) in P4A's update

Wasn't it supposed to be Makoto something? I know everyone is up in a ruckus about that.

Edit: This is the second time I've been Valentine'd.

Yeah, his name is Makoto Yu(u)ki.

Which, funnily enough, happens to be the Japanese name of Jacques Portsman from Ace Attorney Investigations.

Make of that what you will.

Still, that's not a confirmation of P3MC's real name. Has to show up in canon first.

Jacques Portsman's Jacket confirmed as Malevolent Entity in P4A. The only thing that can stop it? Kanji's Jacket. It's the battle of jackets that never fall off their owners!

For some reason, I think that the Eerie Voice might be one of the Kirijo scientists who worked on Death. Practically no evidence, but it makes sense, at least to me.

I watched Labrys's story's mode in detail and I think might be one of those nameless scientists that made her kill her sisters (since they employed the "black soulless eyes" puppet control technique to make #024 attack her). It could very well be a scientist from the Death experiment too, but we know less about that experiment. It could be any one of these nameless scientists, really.

Or maybe it's Hanako.

So... SEGA has Atlus. How doomed are we?

So... SEGA has Atlus. How doomed are we?

I'm only slightly worried. Then again, I would be worried no matter what because there was never any guarantee that it would be good for Atlus.

To use what one of the writers at Blisteredthumbs said (since the press release is indeed jargon): "Note that all of three of the above properties [Megami Tensei, Persona, Etrian Odyssey] are specifically named in the press release wherein SEGA describes its plans to expand the Atlus IPs further in the PC, mobile (where Atlus already has extensive experience, with 31 mobile titles coming from the company since 2004) and amusement machine (i.e. slot machines, pachinko, etc.) markets. The press release also makes it clear that SEGA intends to pursue such releases in addition to further development and distribution of the properties on home and handheld consoles as well. SEGA will not be taking on Index’s debt and the official transfer of ownership of Index’s assets is expected to occur on November 1st, whereupon the newly launched Sega Dream Corporation will take over all of Index’s former business operations."

So they want to go into the "amusement machine" market but still also want to keep expanding on the other markets Atlus has been in. I guess that means nothing bad is happening yet; we just have to continue waiting to see what exactly will happen.

Persona 5 confirmed for IOS

Sega has a terrible record in bringing things to the west...

lemme quote one of the comments in the gematsu article

List of some games that SEGA never released in the west:

Phantasy Star Generations 1

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v...

Phantasy Star Generations 2

https://www.youtube.com/watch?...

Phantasy Star Portable Infinity

https://www.youtube.com/watch?...

A few quests from the 1rst PSO I heard

Valkyria Chronicles 3 (Not to mention that they moved the series from PS3 to PSP angering many.)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?...

Shining Wind

https://www.youtube.com/watch?...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?...

Shining Hearts

https://www.youtube.com/watch?...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?...

Shining Blade

https://www.youtube.com/watch?...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?...

Shining Ark

https://www.youtube.com/watch?...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?...

Valkyria chronicles 3 team is one of my main teams in project x zone and the only way for me to play the goddamned game is to wait for the VC3 translation team to finish the project.

PSP2 infinity is an abandoned dream and i'm not even sure they'll bring PSO2 to the west.

Now my favorite RPGs can suffer such fate.

i'm doomed

I've found that a good way to piss off a Shin Megami Tensei fan is to say that it's like Pokemon. I did this once to someone at my college, and he went into an angry tangent on how Pokemon ripped off SMT years ago, that the SMT monsters would utterly destroy Pokemon, and how SMT is infinitely greater than Pokemon or any other RPG ever made, ever. Then he ranted on why RPGs today suck, except for SMT of course, before proceeding to tell me why SMT4 is the greatest game to come out in years and that I'm not a true gamer for not playing it.

It was funny :-P

Good lord, that's the elitist attitude I always hear of but rarely actually see. He would hate me because I would use that as a description to explain to people what SMT is like and I'm a fan.

This reminds me of the time where a guy informed me that Personas were rip offs of Stands. On a detail level, this isn't true (your ego incarnate vs your fighting spirit incarnate). But on the face of things, it is kinda true (spiritual guardians you can summon). I just gently explained that to him but he didn't want to listen to the facts. It's okay though, as long as he is someday willing to reach out to the truth of things (and P4A is better than JJAS anyway, so nyeh).

Well, he holds some truth. Kaneko admitted that he based Persona off of the stands from Jojo. I wouldn't call it a ripoff though.

As to the Pokemon and Megaten comparision

I feel like Devil Survivor probably has the most similarities to Pokemon, especially with that Keisuke and Kaido battle.
